Jude: Upholding the True Faith in a Corrupt AgeGK611 Morning Devotion 31.03.2026 Speaker:Rev David Tan Introduction: An Age of Confused Values We live in an age where values are in great confusion. Truth has been replaced by relativism, holiness has been swallowed up by a culture of compromise, and faith is no longer under attack but is being ‘diluted’. (That is, that is, weakened) The greatest danger is not external persecution, but internal corruption. I. Called to Fight for the Truth (v1–4) Jude first identifies himself as “a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James”. He does not emphasise that he is the Lord’s biological brother, but rather his identity as a “servant”, demonstrating true humility. This highlights the foundation of the believer’s spiritual life and their mission for this age. Jude first reminds us that we are those called by God, loved by the Father, and kept by Jesus Christ, demonstrating that salvation comes entirely from God’s grace and care; therefore, we ought to live out a steadfast faith in gratitude. However, when false teachers appear within the church—misinterpreting grace, indulging in immorality, or even denying the Lord’s authority—believers can no longer merely enjoy salvation; they must take up their responsibility and contend earnestly for “the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” This is not out of a desire to win or pride, but out of loyalty to the truth and a commitment to protecting the community. True spiritual maturity is not merely about being saved, but about preserving the purity of the Gospel, ensuring that faith is not diluted or distorted by the values of the age. Today, many believers serve diligently but neglect to first establish their identity. True spiritual warfare begins with knowing who we are. When we understand that we are loved, called, and kept, we will not be easily shaken by the world. II. Three Examples of Failure (v5–16) 1. Historical Warnings: The Consequences of Abandoning the True Doctrine (v5–7) Jude uses three examples from the Old Testament to remind believers: although the Israelites were delivered by God from Egypt, they perished in the wilderness because of their unbelief; angels who did not keep their proper place were bound and are awaiting judgement; and Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of their indulgence in immorality. These examples illustrate that receiving grace does not mean one may neglect holiness; status and identity cannot replace obedience and a transformed life. God is both the Saviour and the Judge; abandoning the true faith will inevitably lead to spiritual corruption and ruin. Application: Believers must maintain a heart of reverence, not becoming complacent because of past experiences or status, but rather upholding a life of faith and holiness day by day. 2. The Present Danger: The Nature and Conduct of False Teachers (v8–13) Jude further describes the characteristics of false teachers: they follow their own lusts, despise authority, and slander spiritual matters. He uses the example of Michael the archangel contending with the devil over the body of Moses to contrast this with true spiritual people, who understand humility and reliance on the Lord. These people walk a self-centred path like Cain, stray from the true way for gain like Balaam, and rebel against authority like Korah. They are described as ‘clouds without water, trees in autumn that bear no fruit, and raging waves of the sea’, meaning that whilst they may appear spiritual outwardly but lack true life and substance within. Application: Believers must discern the authenticity of life, looking not merely at gifts or outward appearance, but rather at whether they bear the fruit of godliness and love for others. 3. The Ultimate Outcome: God Will Execute Righteous Judgement (v14–16) Jude quotes a prophecy from the Book of Enoch, declaring that the Lord will descend with myriads of holy ones to judge all the ungodly. These people are constantly gossiping behind others’ backs, grumbling, following their own desires, speaking boastfully, and uttering “flattering words” for personal gain. This passage emphasises an important truth: though history may be temporarily chaotic, God’s righteousness will ultimately be revealed. Believers need not be disheartened by the temporary ascendancy of the wicked, for when the Lord returns, all things will be laid bare and judged. Application: In an age of injustice and chaos, believers must hold fast to hope and live upright lives, trusting that God will ultimately reign, and preparing to meet the Lord in holiness. III. Keeping Ourselves in the Last Days (v17–23) 1. Recognising the State of the Last Days (v17–19) The apostle had long foretold that in the last days there would be those who mock the truth, follow their own desires, and stir up strife. They are carnal, lacking the Holy Spirit, demonstrating that outward religious forms do not equate to true spiritual life. Believers must remain vigilant and discerning, not allowing themselves to be swayed by their surroundings. Self-reflection: • Do not let your faith be shaken by others’ indifference or compromise • Learn to distinguish between spiritual and worldly values • Be a source of unity within the community 2. Building Spiritual Life (v20–21) Believers must actively build themselves up in the faith, pray in the Spirit, and keep themselves in God’s love, whilst looking forward to the mercy of the Lord’s return. This is a continuous spiritual discipline that keeps one’s life steadfast amidst turmoil. Reflection on Life: • Establish a consistent routine of Bible reading and prayer • Meditate frequently on God’s love, overcoming the allure of the world • View life and trials through an eternal lens 3. Restore Others with Mercy (v22–23) Different approaches are required for those in different spiritual states: the doubtful must be gently supported; those trapped in sin must be actively rescued; yet at the same time, we must maintain reverence and holiness, so as not to be contaminated by sin. Application: • Take the initiative to care for the weak or those who have drifted from the faith • Speak truth in love to help others to turn back • Maintain spiritual boundaries whilst serving others Conclusion: Praise God for His ability to preserve us to the end (v24–25) It is God Himself who ultimately preserves us from stumbling. Therefore, believers can walk the path of faith faithfully with confidence and joy. In an age where truth is confused, the greatest act of love is to hold fast to the truth.
