Mark 1: The Kingdom of God Arrives—Manifesting Great Power
GK611 Morning Devotion 09/12/2025 Speaker: Rev David Tan When the light comes, darkness retreats! I. The Kingdom of God Arrives: Repent to Welcomes the Kingdom (Mark 1:1–13) 1. The Lord of the Kingdom—Source of the Gospel (v1) The gospel is not man’s pursuit, but God’s active intervention in human history. Every life requires a ‘beginning of the gospel’; only then can a story be told, and a beautiful ending be assured! 2. Preparing Hearts—The Baptism of Forgiveness of Sins (v2–8) John’s calling: Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight His path. Likewise, for the church to advance the gospel, we need many ‘John the Baptists’ to ‘prepare hearts’ for the Lord’s gospel. Leading people to genuine repentance, washing away sin, and welcoming a new life. 3. The Triune God—Revealing Identity (v9–11) The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit appear together, declaring the authority and origin of the gospel. We too need God to reaffirm our identity: we are also His beloved children! 4. The Wilderness Temptation: The Root of Power (v12–13) The Holy Spirit drove Jesus into temptation—trials are the training ground for God's servants. Those called must undergo testing; overcoming temptation brings forth authority. Summary: The victorious must undergo renewal of life! The process begins with repentance, receiving identity, and overcoming temptation. II. The Message of the Kingdom: Calling Disciples and Manifesting Authority (Mark 1:14–28) 1. The time is fulfilled—the kingdom of God is at hand (v14–15) The kingdom of God is not a distant theory but God’s tangible presence among humanity. Our response: repentance + faith in the gospel—receiving the gospel of eternal life and bearing witness as the Tree of Life. 2. Calling disciples: Follow without hesitation (v16–20) Jesus sought not qualifications but those willing to follow. The disciple’s three actions: immediately, left behind, followed. “Fishers of men”: The call is always tied to the mission of saving souls. 3. Jesus Reveals Himself—The Authority of the Kingdom of God (1:21–28) Jesus taught with authority—for He is the Word Himself. Even demons recognise Him, fear Him, and obey Him. The life of a true disciple also carries spiritual influence. For the Lord has entrusted His authority to us; He is still at work in deliverance. Summary: Following Jesus is not merely a religious activity, but entering into the authority and mission of the Kingdom of God. III. The Manifestation of the Kingdom: Healing, Prayer, and Expansion (Mark 1:29–45) 1. God’s Power—Descending upon the Household (v29–34) Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law, enabling her to “immediately” rise and serve—healing leads to mission. When Jesus enters a home, restoration and renewal follow. Today we too pray for Jesus to enter our homes, that our family members may experience salvation and then rise to serve! 2. Dawn Prayer—Direction and Drive (v35–39) Despite heavy ministry demands, Jesus withdrew to pray in quiet. He was not driven by crowds or needs, but led by the Father’s will. Prayer determines direction, not outcomes. 3. Compassionate Touch—The Unclean Man (v40–45) Jesus, ‘moved with compassion,’ stretched out His hand and touched the leper—the kingdom of God brings restoration. The kingdom does not reject the unclean but reverses uncleanness through compassion. The healed cannot help but proclaim—authentic testimony naturally overflows. Summary: The kingdom of God is not theory but the power that tangibly transforms families, lives, and mission. Conclusion: Receiving the Kingdom, Transforming Lives The church of the Kingdom must [Receive the Kingdom, transform lives]. The Kingdom came with Jesus' arrival: bringing repentance, calling disciples, granting authority, and fulfilling the 611 mission—raising disciples and planting Trees of Life everywhere. This is the ever-renewing, generational mission of discipleship!
