Mark Chapter10: Offer Up Everything
GK611 Morning Devotion 26.12.2025 Speaker: Ps Asher Chang Introduction: Letting Go I. My Marriage (Mark 10:1–12) 1. God Cares for Human Well-Being (v1–5) The Pharisees tested Jesus with the issue of divorce, ostensibly discussing the law but actually seeking grounds for condemnation. Jesus, however, pointed out that Moses had instituted the relevant regulations not out of God's original intention, but as a protective arrangement made because of the hardness of people's hearts and the brokenness of reality. This reveals an important truth: behind the law lies not cold restriction, but God's profound care for humanity. God knew humanity would suffer wounds and fail, so He set boundaries to minimise harm. Yet people easily forget God's heart, retaining only rules and rightness. When faith loses compassion and retains only regulations, relationships grow increasingly rigid. 2. Flowing from the Heart, Revealing the True Self (v14–23) Jesus brings humanity back to the ‘beginning,’ emphasising that marriage is a relationship in which God Himself participates and unites, not merely an emotional bond or contractual agreement. The two become one flesh, representing a covenant of unity that reflects God’s heart. Apart from sexual immorality, any separation essentially destroys what God has joined together. This reminds us that marriage's foundation lies not in emotional fulfilment, but in ongoing willingness to submit to God's design. When we entrust marriage back to God, it is not escapism, but choosing to trust His sovereign hand even amidst brokenness. II. My Faith (Mark 10:13–16) The disciples rebuked those who brought little children to Jesus out of practical considerations, but this displeased Jesus. He pointed out that the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like little children. The emphasis here is not ignorance, but humility, simplicity, and longing. Children do not rely on credentials or calculate returns; they simply trust. When faith becomes complicated, competitive, and performance-driven, it loses the pathway into the kingdom of God. True faith is not transactional, but wholehearted reliance. When people let go of the need to prove themselves and return to a simple longing for God, they enter more genuinely into the reality of God’s kingdom. III. My Wealth (Mark 10:17–34) 1. Leaving Nothing Behind, Surrendering Completely (v17–22) The rich young ruler sincerely sought eternal life, yet went away sorrowful when Jesus pointed out what he still relied on. The issue was not his effort in keeping the Law, but the one thing he was unwilling to surrender. Jesus looked at him and loved him, and precisely because of that love, He exposed the true bondage in his heart. Often, the place we rely on most is the place where it is hardest for us to fully submit to God. 2. What is impossible with man is possible with God Through the rich young ruler’s difficulty in entering the kingdom of God, Jesus revealed a deeper spiritual truth: it is not wealth itself that bars entry, but reliance on anything. When the disciples asked in astonishment, “Who then can be saved?”, Jesus declared plainly: “With man this is impossible, but not with God.” This is not lowering the standard, but pointing out that salvation and the transformation of life never depend on human ability, but come from God's grace. Acknowledging one's inability is where true faith begins. 3. Forsaking All to Inherit the Kingdom of God (v23–34) When Peter mentioned that they had left everything to follow Him, Jesus did not dismiss his response, but shifted the focus from “what is given up” to “what is gained in the kingdom of God.” Letting go is not a transaction or a way to exchange for blessings, but a complete surrender of life’s authority to God. Jesus promised that those who leave things behind for Him and for the gospel will experience the true richness of God’s kingdom in this life and inherit eternal life in the age to come. Yet this path must pass through the cross—before entering glory, one must first enter the shaping of self-denial. IV. My Status (Mark 10:35–45) When the disciples debated who should sit in positions of honour, Jesus spoke instead of suffering and laying down one's life. Worldly authority rests upon control and high positions, whereas the authority of God's kingdom is revealed in humility and service. True greatness lies not in being exalted, but in willingly becoming a servant to others. Jesus set Himself as the ultimate example, declaring He came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. The glory of God's kingdom does not lie in evading sacrifice, but in manifesting itself through self-denial. Those who willingly lay down status and power, live more authentically within the authority of God's kingdom. V. My Needs (Mark 10:46–52) Bartimaeus’ cries were seen by the crowd as an interruption and inconvenience, yet Jesus stopped for him at a moment when He was closest to the cross. People often lose compassion in the pursuit of efficiency and convenience, but Jesus always pauses for genuine need. Bartimaeus threw off the cloak he depended on for survival and responded to Jesus’ call. After receiving his sight, he followed Jesus on the way. True sight does not stop at receiving a blessing; it brings a change in life’s direction, enabling a person to leave the roadside and walk the path of following Jesus. Conclusion: Offering up all one possesses is not loss, but the complete surrender of life's sovereignty back to God.
