Mark Chapter11: A Faith That Bears Fruit in Life
GK611 Morning Devotion 30.12.2025 Speaker: Rev David Tan Introduction: The Purpose of Fruit Tree I. Aligning with the Humble King (Mark 11:1-11) Jesus is a King, yet not the kind people expected: riding a donkey—fulfilling Zechariah 9:9 "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.” The crowds cried out, ‘Hosanna!’ They anticipated Jesus as a political Saviour who would overthrow Roman rule. Yet He came as a humble King, dying for the sins of the world to redeem humanity! People welcomed Jesus expecting Him to solve their problems; He came to reign in their hearts. Do I welcome Jesus so that He will fulfill my plans, or to allow Him to establish His kingdom? II. Deliverance from Fruitless Faith (Mark 11:12-14, 20-21) Leaves without fruit represent a spiritual illusion displeasing to the Lord. This fig tree appeared lush yet bore no fruit, effectively occupying land without purpose. A fruitless fig tree represents a faith with only religious appearance: lively worship on the surface, yet lacking repentance, love, obedience, and the fruit of life. God desires fruit-bearing lives, not religious packaging. As John 15:2 declares: ‘Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.’ Furthermore, Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” III. Guarding Against Defiled Worship (Mark 11:15-19) God’s most severe judgement often falls upon the misuse of “spiritual spaces.” Jesus’ anger was not directed at commerce itself, but at the fact that “But you have made it a den of thieves.” The core purpose of the temple or church is not commerce, it is not: worship becomes a transaction, the sanctuary becomes an instrument, and God’s presence is marginalised. Spiritual Reflection: Is my service truly for God, or am I merely using Him? Does the church remain a ‘house of prayer for all nations’? IV. Prayer of Simple Faith (Mark 11:22-24) True faith is not emotion, but trust in God’s authority: “Have faith in God…whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea…’” This is not a formula to manipulate God, nor a technique for wish fulfillment. Rather, it is complete trust and obedience when God’s will dwells within us. The object of faith is not ‘faith itself,’ but the almighty God. V. Holding Firm to the Power of Forgiveness (Mark 11:25-26) Unforgiveness severs the flow of spiritual authority. Jesus placed prayer, faith, and forgiveness within the same teaching. The truth is that if bitterness grips the heart, no amount of confident declaration from the mouth will have power. Corresponding to: As Matthew 6:14–15 says “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” 2 Corinthians 2:10-11: "Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, lest satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.” Choosing forgiveness is one of the core values of the Tree of Life. VI. Recognising the Source of Authority (Mark 11:27-33) Religious Authority vs. Heavenly Authority—The religious leaders, the chief priests, asked, ‘By what authority are you doing these things?’ Their concern centred on position, systems and delegated authority. Yet Jesus, the Supreme Authority, pointed to the crucial question: ‘Do you acknowledge authority that comes from God?’ For truth to stand: Without obedience, there is no authority; without a calling from God, even the highest position is empty. Conclusion: Living A Life of the Tree of Life Jesus did not come to accommodate religion, but to judge false faith and establish lives that bear fruit, possessing authority, and worship in truth. God seeks not a noisy faith, but a life that bears fruit. Prayer without forgiveness is blocked prayer. True authority comes from complete trust and obedience.
