Mark 3: The Serving Mindset of the Tree of LifeGK611 Morning Devotion 11/12/2025 Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan Introduction: Tree of Life vs. Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. I. Do Not Cling to Rules Rigidly —But Do Good (Mark 3:1–6) 1. Stretching Out the Hand to Do Good and Save Life (v1–5) Jewish rabbis forbade healing on the Sabbath unless it was life-threatening. The peoople brought a man with a withered hand into the synagogue. Their intention was to see whether Jesus would heal on the Sabbath so they could accuse Him. Jesus and the Pharisees both saw the man, but their perspectives and attitudes were completely different. Jesus saw the man’s need; the Pharisees saw an opportunity to trap Jesus. In actual fact, their hearts were more withered than the man’s hand. Jesus did not ignore the man because of their hardness of heart or their rigid rules. He knew His purpose on earth. So He told the man to stretch out his hand. When the man obeyed, his hand was restored. The Tree-of-Life way of ministry does not cling rigidly to rules—it strives to do good. If we often feel self-righteous and judge everything based on right and wrong, then the first “hand” we must stretch out is toward the Lord for healing. Only then can we stretch out our hands to serve others. Through Jesus’ lens, Tree-of-Life ministry is based on an outstretched hand, rather than clinging to regulations. 2. Clinging to Rules Leads to Evil (v6) When we cling only to rules in the.way we handle things, we will drift far from God’s heart in serving. Eventually, we may even hurt God and people. For example, in ministry teams, insisting on principles or procedures without flexibility can destroy unity. Not only does this hinder fruitfulness, it also brings dishonor to Jesus before unbelievers. II. Follow Closely—Live as God’s Children (Mark 3:7–12) 1. Loving Service that Follows Closely (v7–10) Jesus did not promote Himself, yet His ministry drew people from every direction to Galilee. His service carried compassion, healing, and the power of love. Let us follow Him closely so that our ministry bears the Tree-of-Life fragrance that draws more people to follow the Lord. 2. Standing Firm in Our Identity as God’s Children (v11–12) Evil spirits recognized Jesus more accurately than the Pharisees, confessing that He was the Son of God. The Pharisees rejected Him. Jesus sternly forbade the demons from revealing His identity because He knew His identity came from the Father, not from any person, situation, or performance. Are we quick in recognizing the Lord’s work? Do we know the Lord and His truth deep enough? As Christians, our identity is not proven by ministry results, nor is our importance proven by our busyness. We are God’s children. We serve not to perform or impress, but because we are God’s children—because we love Him and know His heart. III. Appoint Disciples and Shepherd with Love (Mark 3:13–19) Jesus knew Judas would betray Him, yet He still shepherded him with love. During their three and a half years together, Jesus never singled Judas out or criticized him. Instead, Jesus loved him, trusted him, and even appointed him as treasurer. Jesus did this hoping that in an environment of love and trust, Judas might repent and not perish. This is Tree-of-Life shepherding. Even when group members are weak, let us imitate Jesus—shepherd with love, give them room to grow, and build them up as the Lord’s disciples. IV. Do Not Fear Slander—Rely on the Holy Spirit (Mark 3:22–30) The scribes came from Jerusalem not to seek truth but to attack Jesus maliciously, accusing Him of working by the power of the prince of demons. Jesus was not provoked into retaliation. Patiently, He used the illustration of a divided kingdom or household collapsing to show that their accusation was illogical. He then explained that His works were done by the Holy Spirit—the One who binds the strong man. In ministry, we may also face misunderstanding, criticism, belittling, or slander. Do not lose heart—entrust your heart to the Holy Spirit. Continue serving with the life of the Tree of Life. The fruit of our lives—character, love, authenticity, endurance—never lies. When we refuse to harbor malice and instead persist in love and patience, maintaining relationship, this is the Holy Spirit’s power to “bind the strong man.” This is impacting lives with Tree-of-Life life. V. Do God’s Will—Become the Family of the Lord (Mark 3:20–21, 31–35) Jesus’ mother and brothers came to the place where He was ministering to look for Him. This was a moment of tension: culturally, family should take precedence over ministry; relationally, blood ties seem more “natural” than spiritual ties. Yet Jesus’ response was surprising: “Whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.” Jesus was not denying or rejecting His family. He was elevating relationships from the worldly realm to the spiritual realm. Only those who listen to His word, follow Him, and join Him in doing the Father’s will are His true family. Conclusion: Serving with Life When we serve the Lord, what is the foundation of our service? True serving is not merely doing tasks—it is the overflow of life. It is obeying God’s will and fulfilling His commission. May the Holy Spirit touch us this morning. May He restore our withered hands and withered hearts. May we be like Jesus—loving, healing, building, and shepherding with our lives—so that the Tree of Life fills the whole earth.
