Mark Chapter 5: The Lord Who Casts Out Demons, Heals the Sick, and Raises the DeadGK611 Morning Devotion 16.12.2025 Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew I. Casting Out Demons — The Lord Triumphs Over All Darkness (Mark 5:1–20) 1. A Man Possessed by an Unclean Spirit (v1–5) Jesus and His disciples came to the region of the Gadarenes. A man possessed by an unclean spirit ran toward Jesus from the tombs. No one could restrain him. This was a life completely devastated by darkness. Today, many dwell not in tombs yet live as if within them: emotionally uncontrolled, relationships shattered, inwardly isolated, knowing wrong yet unable to cease. 2. Jesus’ Command and Deliverance (v6–13) When the man saw Jesus, he fell down and worshiped Him. The demons recognized Him as the Son of the Most High God and could only submit to His command. They were driven into a herd of pigs, which rushed down the steep bank and perished. We may not be demon-possessed, yet we are often controlled by “demons of the heart”: stinginess, fear, anxiety, timidity, anger, and more. Jesus is able to drive out these darknesses as well and set our lives free. 3. From Possessed to Missionary (v14-20) The man, once ragged and deranged, now clothed and sitting quietly, yearned to follow Jesus. Yet Jesus sent him home to testify for God. The formerly bound became a witness to the kingdom of God. The Lord saves and sets us free not merely to live better lives, but to return to the world and live out our testimony. II. Healing the Sick— The Lord Restores All Brokenness (Mark 5:25–34) 1. Twelve Years of Despair, Healed by Touching the Lord (v25–29) This woman had been sick for twelve years. She had spent all she had and was isolated from others, yet she believed that if she only touched Jesus’ garment, she would be healed. Her faith touched the Lord, and her bleeding stopped immediately. Today, we too may experience ‘chronic bleeding’ in our lives: disappointment, wounds, rejection, or entanglement in sin. Yet Jesus heals not only the body but also the heart. Persisting in prayer, Scripture reading, and attend gatherings even in the valley is like reaching out to touch the Lord. 2. Being Called Out Signifies the Lord's Restitution (v30-34) Jesus sensed that someone had touched Him in faith and stopped to ask, not to shame her, but to publicly affirm her faith and grant her honour. He called her “daughter,” restoring her identity before everyone. Healing is not only a physical change, but also the restoration of identity and dignity. III. Resurrection from the Dead—The Lord Turns Every Dead End Around (Mark 5:21-24, 35-43) 1.The synagogue ruler falls prostrate before the Lord (v21-24) Though Jairus held the position of synagogue leader, he came before Jesus seeking help, revealing that all need the Lord. What often hinders us from experiencing God is not the magnitude of our problems, but our over-reliance on ourselves. The starting point of faith is acknowledging our own inadequacy and we need Jesus. 2. “She Is Not Dead but Asleep” (v35–40) On the way, news came that the child had died, and people urged Jairus not to trouble Jesus anymore. But Jesus said, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” At Jairus’ house, people were weeping. Jesus said, “The child is not dead but sleeping” and they laughed at Him. So He put them all outside. The world often mocks our faith as well. Like Jesus, we must remove those voices and keep only God’s word, spiritual companions, and the voice of faith. 3. One Word Brings Life Back (v41–43) Jesus took the little girl by the hand and commanded with authority, “Little girl, arise.” Immediately she got up and walked. Jesus also told them to give her something to eat, showing His tender care for life. Likewise, the Lord can bring back to life the hopes, relationships, and callings that have died in our lives— restoring them to life in Christ. Conclusion: Casting out demons, healing the sick, and raising the dead are three declarations from the Lord: You have not been abandoned! You are not finished yet! Your life is still in My hands! May we all live by this word: Do not be afraid; only believe!
