Mark Chapter 7: Worship in Spirit and in Truth
GK611 Morning Devotion 18.12.2025 Speaker: Ps Asher Chang Introduction: Posture Without Substance I. Outward Piety, Inward Distortion (Mark 7:1–23) 1. Lips That Worship, Hearts That Are Far Away (v1–13) The Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem, yet what they focused on was not Jesus’ compassion or healing, but the fact that His disciples ate without washing their hands according to tradition. They elevated human traditions as the standard of piety, while ignoring what God truly values—the human heart. Jesus quoted Isaiah to point out that they honored God with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him. Their seemingly devout practices actually nullified God’s word. In the example of "Corban", they used spiritual language as an excuse to evade their responsibility to honor their parents, revealing a lack of integrity in their lives. This reflects a faith that has outward form but lacks genuine obedience—external posture without inner reality. 2. What Flows From the Heart Reveals the True Self (v14–23) Jesus further taught the crowd that what truly defiles a person is not what enters from the outside, but what comes out from within. The real problem of life is not rules or environment, but the human heart. Sins of the mind and sins of action are equally real before God. If the heart is not renewed, outward correction will ultimately remain superficial. Jesus emphasized that it is not the outward that proves the heart, but the heart that naturally expresses itself outwardly. True godliness must flow from within. II. A Genuine Longing That Encounters Miracles (Mark 7:24–37) 1. Humble Submission That Receives Healing (v24–30) In sharp contrast to the Jewish religious leaders stands the faith of a Gentile woman. She had no status and entitlement, yet because of her deep longing for Jesus, she humbly acknowledged her unworthiness and still clung firmly to the Lord’s mercy. She did not argue or withdraw, but responded in obedient faith to Jesus’ words. It was precisely this humility and submission that led her to experience the miracle of her daughter’s healing, revealing that true faith is not insisting on what one deserves, but trusting God even in one’s unworthiness. 2. Those Who Receive the Lord Are Opened (v31–37) When Jesus healed the man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, the man could neither hear clearly nor express himself properly, yet he did not resist Jesus’ approach. Jesus responded with compassion and touch, opening his ears and releasing his tongue. This reminds us that many obstacles in life are not due to a lack of understanding of truth, but because the heart is closed. Those who are willing to receive the Lord and allow Him into their lives will experience true opening and renewal. Conclusion: An Integrated Life, Authentic Worship Mark chapter 7 clearly shows us that true worship is not about outward correctness, but about an integrated life. The Pharisees possessed the form of godliness yet were far from God in their hearts, while the Gentile woman and the deaf man experienced grace through sincerity and openness. Worship in spirit and in truth is the willingness to open our hearts honestly before God, allowing our lives to be renewed from within, so that we may live a genuine, undivided life that is truly connected with Him.
