Revelation 1: The Manifestation and Revelation of Jesus ChristGK611 Morning Devotion 03.02.2026 Speaker: Rev David Introduction: Whom Do You Behold? I. The Source of Revelation and the Declaration of Sovereignty (Rev 1:1–8) 1. Revelation from Heaven to Earth (v1-3) The source of Revelation is God → through Jesus Christ → by means of an angel → delivered to John → then to the churches. This constitutes the most significant instruction descending from heaven to earth. Revelation does not aim to instil fear, but to unveil spiritual realities, so that those who read or hear it may be blessed! We often perceive Revelation as difficult to comprehend. Yet the truth is just the opposite, because it is a revelation that the Holy Spirit desires the church to understand. We grasp it according to what we need to understand. The promised ‘blessing’ here involves three actions: i. Reading— that is read aloud ii. Listening—deliberately choosing to hear iii. Keeping—obeying and practising; thus we must discern what truths require our active implementation. 2. From Eternity to Eternity (v4-8) Here God’s self-existence and eternality are revealed once again. He is the beginning of all things and the end of all things; It demonstrates that the Lord Jesus is King of kings and the source of all creation. More precious still is the revelation of our unique identity: beloved, forgiven of sins, made into a kingdom, and a priesthood. This elevates our experience and position into an incomparably glorious realm! Time is in the Lord's hands; before and after its beginning and end, He reigns supreme. As the source of all things, we must affirm that when the world is in chaos, the Church does not seek answers haphazardly but realigns itself with Christ who reigns. In other words: [When the world is in turmoil, the Lord is still in control]! One actionable calling we are reminded of here is to live as ‘priests of God’! Priests serve as ‘mediators’ between God and humanity: bringing human needs before God and conveying God's will to people. II. The Context of Revelation and the Glorious Christ (Rev 1:9-18) 1. Receiving Revelation Amidst Tribulation (v9-11) The island of Patmos was a barren, isolated, and harsh outpost in the Aegean Sea, used by the first-century Roman Empire to exile political and religious prisoners. The Apostle John was exiled there for ‘the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.’ Yet amidst isolation, suffering, and forced labour, God revealed heavenly visions to him, giving birth to the Book of Revelation. This demonstrates that when the world rejects you, the Sovereign Lord in heaven still speaks to you. The revelations addressed the seven churches of that era, yet they also foreshadowed challenges facing the universal church throughout history. Thus, we must heed carefully its warnings and exhortations. 2. The Judge with Eyes Like Flames (v12-16) The core of this book is not calamity but Christ in glory: John, exiled to Patmos for bearing witness to Jesus, saw the risen Lord walking among the seven golden lampstands, revealing His personal presence and oversight of the persecuted church. The Lord’s image is not only that of a shepherd, but also the King of judgement. His eyes like flames penetrating all things, His mouth a sharp sword wielding truth in judgement, His feet like refined bronze crushing all unrighteousness, His countenance like the blazing sun revealing irresistible holiness and authority. Thus the church knows: amidst an age of chaos and darkness, both history and the church remain in the hands of this righteous Judge. 3. The Lord of Life Who Holds Power over Death (v17–18) John was utterly terrified when he first beheld the Lord! This image was clearly different from the shepherd-like image of the Son of Man he once knew. For the returning Jesus Christ comes as the Judge who decrees eternal life or eternal death. He holds the keys of death and Hades; Jesus declared that He ‘holds the keys of death and Hades.’ This signifies that death and its aftermath are no longer under the dominion of dark powers, but entirely subject to the sovereign authority of the risen Lord. Having personally entered death and emerged victorious, He has reclaimed ultimate authority. Thus, neither persecution, tribulation, nor death itself can determine the destiny of God's people, for the gates of life and death are now held firmly in Christ's hands. Knowing that the Lord is the Judge, we ought all the more to walk in light and truth, becoming witnesses to the Gospel! This passage might also be expressed thus: [Even when in adversity, our eyes must still behold the glory of Christ]! III. The Structure of Revelation and the Keys to Interpretation (Rev 1:19-20) John was commanded to record both ‘what is now taking place’ and ‘what must take place hereafter.’ The seven stars and seven golden lampstands are not abstract symbols, but point to the actual churches and their genuine spiritual responsibilities. The seven stars represent the messengers of the churches in the Lord's hand; the seven golden lampstands represent the churches on earth bearing God's light. This reveals that the church is not a scattered collection, but a spiritual system personally governed, upheld, and commissioned by Christ Himself. Thus we know: history is in the Lord's hands, and so is the church. In other words: When we cannot discern the path ahead, the Lord Himself is the answer to all things! Conclusion: The Church is the Witness of History Revelation begins and ends with Christ. The Church is not history's bystander, but the witness within God's plan. In the darkest ages, God first reveals to us who still stands in the midst of the lampstands. The world's true history is not written in the ‘White House’ or the mightiest imperial palace, but in a band of churches that continue to shine in the darkness. We are the Lord's chosen witnesses!
