Revelation 5: The Scroll Concerning Humanity’s DestinyGK611 Morning Devotion 10.02.2026 Speaker: Rev David Tan Introduction: Who Has the Final Say? I. The Scroll Concerning Humanity’s Destiny (Rev 5:1) This passage speaks of a sealed scroll in God’s hand. It represents God’s ultimate plan for human history and redemption. His judgment upon the whole earth, the establishment of God’s kingdom, the termination of satan’s dominion, and the fulfilment of Christ’s as King. Why was the scroll ‘sealed with seven seals’? In the Roman world of that time, wills and legal inheritance documents were sealed with seven seals, to be opened only by the rightful heir. Some strive diligently to acquire land on earth, unaware that the ‘ownership of the earth’ actually rests entirely in God's hands. For even our very lives do not belong to us! II. Who Is Worthy to Open the Scroll? (Rev 5:2–6) 1. No One in Heaven or on Earth is Worthy (v2–4) Why did John weep? Not out of curiosity, but because if no one could open it: evil would not cease, injustice would remain unredressed, God’s promises would not be fulfilled, and His kingdom would not come. No one would know humanity’s ultimate fate. All of human history would remain perpetually stalled, for none were worthy to open the scroll! The key to history lies not in human hands. Though the world appears chaotic, ‘the outcome written in the scroll remains in God's hands.’ Christian faith is not founded on circumstances, but on the throne that still reigns supreme. 2. The Lion of the Tribe of Judah (v5) Here appears the Old Testament messianic title: Genesis 49:9, ‘The Lion of Judah.’ Isaiah 11:1, ‘The Root of David.’ This signifies the true King of mankind has appeared. John anticipated witnessing a conquering King (the Messiah as warrior), already triumphant over all enemies. Thus, sovereignty over history rests not in human hands but in Christ's—He alone can unveil God's ultimate purpose. 3. The Lord is the Lamb that was Slain (V6) This stands as one of Revelation's most profound reversals. John ‘heard’ the Lion, yet ‘saw’ the Lamb. This signifies that Jesus conquered not through military might, but through the cross. The lion symbolises authority; the lamb represents sacrifice. God’s method of saving the world is not through strength, but through substitutionary atonement. “Standing as though slain”! This signifies having been killed, yet now resurrected. This is how Christ triumphed over satan. III. Only the Lamb Is Worthy to Open the Scroll (5:7–10) When the Lamb took the scroll, worship immediately arose in heaven. Here the reason for His worthiness is given: not because Jesus is God, but because He paid the price for humanity. In other words: Jesus is worthy to rule the world because He first shed His blood for it. This is an exceedingly vital spiritual principle: God's authority passes first through the cross. We are all redeemed by such an immense price, becoming God's people, priests, and entrusted with kingly authority to rule. This is our redemptive identity, not a status we earned on our own. How glorious this is! IV. Worship and Praise from the Whole Universe (5:11–14) Angels, living creatures, elders, and all creation worship together: Chapter 4 worships the Creator; Chapter 5 worships the Redeemer. That is to say: because of creation → God is worthy of worship. Because of redemption → Christ is worthy of worship. This is actually one of the strongest declarations of Christ’s divinity in the New Testament. Jesus is worshipped alongside God the Father. Christ’s way of victory is the cross. Humanity believes that power equals victory. God declares that sacrifice is true victory. Therefore: forgiveness is victory, obedience is victory, and loving one’s enemies is victory. Conclusion: Only Jesus Can Solve Humanity’s Problem The sinful world cannot escape the judgment of destruction, because humanity’s core problem is not systems, education, or civilization. . It is the judgement of sin and the ownership of life! Whoever pays the price has the authority. Jesus did not come merely to improve the world, but to legally redeem the world. We are beneficiaries of the greatest redemptive plan in the history of the universe. So how, then, will you view your own life?
