Introduction: An Age of High-Quality Counterfeits
I. Exposing the Antichrist (Revelation 13:1–10)
1. The Image of the Antichrist (v1–2)
The beast rising out of the sea has seven heads and ten horns, wearing royal crowns, symbolizing ruling authority. On its heads are blasphemous names, representing self-exaltation and opposition against God. It resembles a leopard, a bear, and a lion—combining the characteristics of evil empires throughout history. Most crucially: “The dragon gave it his power, his throne, and great authority.” This is a counterfeit—just as the Father gives authority to the Son, the dragon gives authority to the Antichrist. Its appearance is glorious, but its source is satan. Today, we too are easily attracted to power, scale, and success, while neglecting the spirit behind them. If high-quality counterfeit glory is not discerned, it can become the false goal we pursue for a lifetime.
2. The Authority of the Antichrist (v3–7)
The beast “seemed to have a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed.” The original wording parallels the Lamb who was “slain,” clearly imitating Christ’s resurrection. The whole earth marvels and follows the beast, even saying, “Who is like the beast?” This is false redemption producing false worship. However, Scripture emphasizes that authority was “given to it,” and only for “forty-two months.” Darkness may have temporary victories, even “waging war against the saints and conquering them,” but everything remains under God’s permission. When we see powerful forces flourishing and truth suppressed, we need not lose heart. The halftime score is not the final outcome. God is still sovereign, and the time is limited.
II. Guarding Against the False Prophet (Revelation 13:11–18)
1. Beastly in Nature (v11–13)
The beast from the earth “had two horns like a lamb but spoke like a dragon.” Its outward appearance is gentle, but inwardly it carries the dragon’s voice. This is the false prophet—a counterfeit of the Holy Spirit—bearing witness for the Antichrist. It performs great signs, even calling down fire from heaven, imitating prophets and miracles.
The danger of the false prophet lies in this: it does not appear with violence, but with persuasive, reasonable, and idealistic language that leads people away from the truth. Today, many voices seem inclusive and progressive, yet may not glorify Christ. We must discern the source of the voice, lest we be led into false worship beneath a gentle exterior.
2. Possessing the Spirit of the Devil (v14–15)
The false prophet deceives those who dwell on the earth, telling them to make an image for the beast. This directly challenges the commandment against idolatry. More terrifying still, it causes the image of the beast to “come to life and speak,” threatening death to those who refuse to worship it. What begins as ideological agreement develops into life-threatening oppression. Today, we may not build golden statues, but we may idolize systems, success, and power in our hearts. When a system becomes unquestionable, when disagreement leads to exclusion—that is the moment the idol comes alive. We need God to tear down the images in our hearts so that we worship only the Lamb.
3. Bearing a Mark (v16–18)
All people are required to receive a “mark” on their forehead or hand, representing ownership and allegiance. The forehead symbolizes thought; the hand symbolizes action. Not only inner belief, but outward behavior becomes controlled by the system. Without the mark, one cannot buy or sell—faith becomes a matter of survival. “Six hundred sixty-six” is the number of man, symbolizing humanism pushed to its extreme, yet always falling short of God. We live in a highly digitalized age where identity and data are closely intertwined. We must reflect carefully: where does our true belonging lie? Only having our names written in the Lamb’s Book of Life is an eternal identity.
Conclusion: See the enemy clearly. Renew your consecration. Turn defeat into victory.
