Revelation 16 The Reckoning and Restoration of God

Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew
I. Righteous Reckoning: Blood for Blood (Revelation 16:1–7)
1. Painful Sores Strike Those Who Worship the Beast (V1–2)
The first angel went out and poured his bowl filled with God’s great wrath onto the earth. Terrible and malignant sores broke out on those who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.
Everyone must take responsibility for their own choices. Those who chose to worship the beast may have gained temporary survival, but in the end they fell into misery worse than death.
2. Blood for Blood: A Righteous Judgment (V3–7)
The second angel poured his bowl into the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead man—dark and foul—and every living creature in the sea died. The third angel poured his bowl into the rivers, and even the fresh waters became blood.
Perhaps you have been wronged or misunderstood, feeling deeply aggrieved and wondering why God has not acted. But this passage reminds us: God keeps accounts.
His judgment is precise and righteous. We do not need to fight to the bitter end; we simply entrust everything to the Lord. In the end, the wicked will reap what they have sown.
II. Hardened Hearts That Refuse to Repent (Revelation 16:8–11)
1. Scorched by Fierce Heat, Yet Still Hardened (V8–9)
Here, God turned the sun into a blazing furnace to scorch people. Yet the most
terrifying part is this: “They were seared by the intense heat and they blasphemed the name of God… but they refused to repent.”
When difficulties, sickness, and setbacks scorch us like burning heat, do we complain against God and doubt Him? Or do we reflect and repent in the midst of suffering? The real crisis is not suffering itself, but refusing the God who alone can save us.
2. Darkness Covers, Yet No Repentance (V10–11)
The fifth bowl was poured on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. But people, in their pain and sores, blasphemed God and refused to repent.
This reminds us that any power or prosperity built in opposition to God will ultimately collapse and fall into darkness. If people insist on rejecting God, He allows them to remain in the darkness and pain they have chosen.
III. Final Vigilance : Guarding Holiness (Revelation 16:12–16)
The sixth angel poured his bowl on the Euphrates River, and its water dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. Then three impure spirits, like frogs, came out of the mouths of the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet. They performed signs and deceived the kings of the world, gathering them for battle.
Today, various heresies, hatred, and hedonistic voices also leap around like these “frogs.” Only by holding fast to God’s Word and remaining watchful in prayer can we stand firm.
IV. Complete Reversal: God Says, “It Is Done” (Revelation 16:17–21)
The seventh angel poured his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came from the throne in the temple, saying, “It is done!” Then came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a great earthquake—manifestations of God’s presence. Never since mankind has been on earth has there been such a severe earthquake. This is not only a geographical upheaval, but a total spiritual reversal.
“It is done” means that the plan of redemption has been fully accomplished: sin is removed, the devil is defeated, and God’s kingdom has fully come.
What hope these words bring! They tell us that history is not an endless cycle, nor is it inevitably drifting toward destruction. Under God’s sovereign rule, it is moving toward glorious restoration. Present suffering, persecution, and injustice are temporary. God will ultimately vindicate His people and wipe away our tears. This also urges us to pray earnestly for those who have not yet believed, asking God to soften their hearts while there is still time.
Conclusion:
Revelation 16 is not merely a “list of judgments,” but a “map of restoration”:
Accept the reckoning: Ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse the selfish desires within our lives.
Reject hardness: In the fiery furnace of suffering, choose softness of heart and cry out to God.
Stay watchful and guarded: Put on the robe of holiness and righteousness, and do not be deceived by the lies of the last days.
