I. Witnessing Jesus in the Flesh (John 1:1-18)

1.In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God. (V1-5)

"In the beginning was the Word" indorses Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth". John deliberately used "in the beginning" to point to the time before the beginning, emphasizing that the "Word" was before everything.

V1 The Word was with God, and the Word was God. That is to say, Jesus existed before He was born, because He is God, He is one with God the Father, and He participated in the creation of the world. The Word has life, Jesus is the source of all life, and Jesus is also light.

2. The Word became flesh and lived among men (V6-18)

God is not high above, like the tabernacle in the Old Testament. God wants to live among His people, and now He in the flesh lives among us through Jesus. Jesus, as the Word, wants to live among people, and as the light, He wants to illuminate the world living in darkness.

Summary: The Lord Jesus is the "Word", the light, and the life. But do we live by the Lord every day? The Lord Jesus lives among us, but does He really "live in your heart"?

II. John the Baptist’s Testimony and Result (John 1:19-51)

1. John the Baptist’s humble testimony (V19-28)

The Levite priest came to ask John the Baptist: “Who are you?” He answered three “I am not”: not Christ, not Elijah, not the prophet. He did not steal the glory of the Lord but only said that he was “the voice of the wilderness”.

John’s example reminds us: True greatness is to make people know Jesus! A good witness does not want others to remember him, but to let them know Jesus!

2. Point out Jesus and help people know the Lord (V29-37)

V29 Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! The “Lamb” symbolizes the sin offering of the Old Testament. John the Baptist wanted people to see that Jesus was the sin offering prepared by God, and He came to atone for the sins of people.

When John the Baptist’s two disciples heard this, they immediately followed Jesus! This is the end of testimony: sending people to Jesus!

3. Result of witnessing: Spreading the Lord in succession (V38-51)

John the Baptist spread the gospel to Andrew, Andrew led Peter, and Philip led Nathanael. No one suddenly understood the gospel by themselves. There were always people willing to spread it, to lead people, and to believe in it.

From John the Baptist to the first generation of disciples, everyone became an "intermediary", not to replace Jesus, but to lead people to see Jesus. Have we become the "introducer" for others to meet Jesus?

Conclusion:

May we all be like John the Baptist, humbly but clearly pointing out who Jesus is, regardless of applause or attention; and like Andrew and Philip, eagerly bringing people to meet the Lord!
