John 15
The Threefold Relationship of Spiritual Life

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

I. Relationship with Christ (John 15:1-11)

1. The True Vine and the Vinedresser (V1-3)

Jesus calls himself the ‘true vine’, which means that He is the source that can truly produce fruit. The Heavenly Father is the vinedresser, the gardener who carefully takes care of our growth, pruning the branches so that they can produce more fruit.

2. Bear more fruit in the Lord (V4-8)

Jesus said that if a branch does not abide in the vine, it cannot bear fruit; if it is separated from the Lord, its life will wither. But if we abide in the Lord and His words are in our hearts, what we ask for will be fulfilled. Those who pray in the Lord will bear more fruit and glorify God!

3. Abide in the Lord's love and be happy and satisfied (V9-11)

When we obey the Lord's commandments, we abide in His love, just as Jesus obeyed the Father's commandments and abided in the Father's love. In this way, our joy can be satisfied. True joy does not come from external circumstances, but from a close relationship with the Lord.

Summary: Our relationship with Christ is the foundation of our spiritual life. Only by abiding in the Lord can we bear spiritual fruit and experience true joy.

II. Relationship with the Body (John 15:12-17)

1. Love one another with your fellow members (V12-13)

Here, Jesus commands his disciples to love one another and uses his own sacrificial love as an example and standard for love. This reminds us that loving one another is not only about emotional care, but also about being willing to give and even sacrifice for one another.

2. Promoted from servant to friend (V14-15)

Jesus said: If you obey my commandments, you are my friends. This is a close and trusting relationship that makes people feel respected and loved. In this indifferent era, the church should become a real loving home, because the Lord has accepted us as friends, and we should also love each other.

3. Chosen by the Lord to Bear Fruit (V16-17)

The Lord chose us to be His friends so that we can bear fruit and keep the fruit, including preaching the gospel and serving. He also commanded us to love one another, which is the foundation of the relationship between believers and our common mission.

III. Relationship with the World (John 15:18-27)

1. Do not compromise with the hatred of the world (V18-19)

This reminds us that as Christians, we may suffer hostility and persecution from the world. The Lord Jesus said that the world hates us because they hated Him first. When we do not compromise, although we will be hated by the world, we will eventually receive God's eternal reward.

2. Interaction in hostile relationships (V20-25)

Christians face hatred and persecution because they imitate the Lord and are united with Him; the Lord also pointed out that this is an "inevitable result."

Hostility will not stop, but we can choose to be uncompromising believers, nor bitter believers, and face it in the Lord's way: continue to speak the truth in love, live out faith with patience, and handle relationships with the world with wisdom.

3. The Holy Spirit comes to help bear witness (V26-27)

Finally, the Lord turns the focus to the work of the Holy Spirit and the mission of the disciples. The Holy Spirit will come to help the disciples bear witness to the Lord even when facing the hostility of the world.

The Holy Spirit is the defence lawyer, and we are the witnesses. We are not responsible for persuading people, but only for telling the truth. Our relationship with the world is not confrontation or compromise, but transformation!

Conclusion: Which relationship would you like to take to the next level?

Do you want to be more deeply connected to the Lord today? Love the members more truly? Or stand up for the Lord more courageously?

May the Lord help us grow in these three relationships and live out a true, abundant, and a testimonial spiritual life!
