John 16
Overcoming in the Storm Through the Lord

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella

Introduction: The Lord Reigns in the Storm
I. A Forewarning of Persecution (John 16:1–4)

1. From Rejection to Misunderstanding (V2–3)

The Lord foretells that believers will face misunderstanding, isolation, and even persecution. These arise from spiritual blindness—because they do not know the Father or the Son, they mistakenly think they are serving God by persecuting others. Thus, when we encounter misunderstanding and rejection, we should not be surprised, for the Lord has already forewarned us.

2. Forewarning to Strengthen Faith (V4)

The Lord's warnings are not to instill fear but to prepare His disciples. Likewise, God informs us of coming trials not to bring despair but to ready and strengthen us.

Summary: The Lord does not hide the storms of faith but equips us in advance so we can stand firm in trials through Him.

II. The Comfort and Help of the Holy Spirit (John 16:5–15)

1. The Coming of the Holy Spirit Is More Beneficial (V5–7)

Jesus said His departure would allow the Holy Spirit to come. The Spirit dwells in every believer, offering constant help and guidance. Today, the Holy Spirit within us empowers us even amid the storm.

2. The Spirit Convicts and Leads to Truth (V8–11)

The Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. Transformation in people’s lives is the work of the Spirit, not human ability. Therefore, when we share the gospel, we must depend on the Spirit, not technique.

3. The Spirit Guides Into All Truth (V12–15)

The Holy Spirit leads us to understand and live out the truth. He doesn’t speak on His own but glorifies Christ and reveals His words to us. Today, whether reading the Bible, listening to sermons, or making decisions, if we rely on the Spirit, we will go deeper into truth.

Summary: The Lord did not promise to remove storms but gave us the Holy Spirit as our ever-present help, comfort, and guide.

III. Sorrow Will Turn Into Joy (John 16:16–22)

1. The Lord’s Temporary Absence Brings Confusion (V16–18)

The disciples were puzzled when Jesus said, “You will not see Me, then you will see Me.” But God’s plan far surpasses human understanding. In our confusion, we shouldn’t rush to conclude “God is absent.” He may simply be “hidden” as He prepares a greater revelation.

2. Sorrow Will Turn into Joy (V19–20)

Jesus said clearly, “You will weep and lament... but your sorrow will be turned into joy.” The storm is not the end—tears are often the path to joy.

3. New Life After Pain (V21–22)

Jesus used the metaphor of a woman giving birth to show the joy that comes after pain. His joy cannot be taken away—it is the promise of resurrection and eternal security.

Summary: Though suffering is real, the Lord promises a joy that is deeper and lasting. After tears comes renewed life.

IV. Prayer Will Be Answered (John 16:23–27)

1. Boldly Pray in Jesus’ Name (V23)

Jesus said we can pray directly to the Father in His name. This is the believer’s privilege and the foundation of our confidence—we can approach God’s throne of grace boldly through Jesus.

2. Joy Comes Through Answered Prayer (V24)

Jesus taught that prayer leads to joy—not just because of answered requests, but because of connection with God.

3. The Father’s Love Never Fails (V25–27)

The Father’s proactive love allows us to open our hearts to Him without fear.

V. Jesus Has Overcome the World (John 16:28–33)

1. The Lord Knows His Mission and Overcomes (V28)

Jesus knew He came from the Father and would return, having completed salvation. This is His own summary of His life’s mission.

2. The Disciples’ Weakness, The Lord’s Support (V29–32)

Though the disciples’ faith was still weak, Jesus responded with compassion and hope. Today, Jesus understands our weaknesses. His victory is not based on our strength, but on His completed triumph.

3. The Lord Has Overcome—We Have Peace (V33)

Jesus never promised a storm-free life. Instead, He told us to be courageous because in Him, we have peace—He has already overcome the world.

Conclusion:

No matter how fierce the storm, we have peace because the Lord is with us. No matter how strong the enemy, we have hope because the Lord has overcome.
