John 19
Jesus is on trial, the crowd is revealed

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

I. Pilate wanted to remain neutral but became an accomplice (John 19:1-16)

1. Fearing people more than God for self-preservation (V1-11)

Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent, but he still flogged Him. It was only because of the shouts and pressure of the crowd. Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent, and his strategy was to find a compromise and save himself. But faith has never been a game of pleasing both sides.

2. The result is that neither side is pleased (V12-16)

He wanted to release Jesus, but he did not dare to offend the Jewish leaders. In the end, he compromised and handed over Jesus.

Summary: Pilate is not a bad person, but he represents those "good-for-nothings" who seem to be neutral but have actually lost their position.

II. Religious leaders who were so ‘religious’ that they offended God (John 19:7, 15)

1. Doing injustice in the name of religion (V7)

They accused Jesus of “claiming to be the Son of God” and that he deserved to die! This group of people strictly abided by the law but did injustice in the name of religion and were eager to kill Jesus!

When faith loses love, it will turn into condemnation and persecution!

2. We have no king except Caesar (V15)

This group of people who strictly adhere to Jewish law actually denied God's sovereignty and declared that "we have no king except Caesar."

These leaders remind us that the most dangerous mistake is to wear a mask of piety and turn faith into a tool to protect one's own interests.

III. Soldiers drawing lots for clothes at the foot of the cross (19:23-24)

The soldiers drew lots at the feet of Jesus, but they had no feeling for His suffering. Just like Christians who watch the "Good Friday video" today while scrolling through their phones.

IV. The disciples who continued to love each other in the midst of suffering (John 19:25-27)

At the darkest moment, there was still a group of people standing at the foot of the cross who did not flee: Jesus’ mother, believers, and disciples who had “leaned on the Lord’s chest.” They had no power, no weapons, only a loyal heart!

In extreme pain, Jesus still looked after his mother and entrusted his disciples to take care of her. Even on the cross, He still lived out an example of love and established a new spiritual family.

God’s family is not a group of ‘perfect people’, but a group of people who love each other because of Jesus’ love.

V. Believers who bravely stand up for the Lord (John 19:38-42)

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus no longer hide their identities. They request to bury Jesus and publicly offer perfume; when everyone leaves, they choose to stand out.

Many times, true faith is not praising in glory but being faithful beside the tomb and standing up to testify for Jesus in front of people!

VI. Jesus the Victorious King on the Cross (John 19:28-37)

1. He is the Lord who fulfils the promise of salvation (V28-30)

‘It is finished’ is the ultimate declaration: salvation is complete!

2. He is the Lord who suffered according to prophecy (V31-36)

The bones were not broken, and the side was pierced, which were the exact fulfilment of the prophecies in the Old Testament.

3. He is the Lord who attracts all nations to look up to Him (V37)

‘They will look on Him whom they have pierced’, this is the starting point of repentance.

Summary: The Lord Jesus is not a loser; He is the glorious victorious King who has accomplished salvation!

Conclusion: Which role are you in the trial of Jesus? Or which ones?

May we all be people who stand for the Lord under the cross!
