The Call to Shepherd

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan
A familiar place, a familiar craft — yet an entire night of fruitless labor. Daybreak came! The risen Lord Jesus appeared. He pierced right into the hearts of those focused on "making a living" with one direct question: “Children, have you any food?” Nothing at all! What can man expect apart from the divine calling? Then came a miraculous command — a divine instruction the disciples had once experienced — and as a result, a net full of fish was caught: a miracle happened.
1. Immediate Recognition:
"It is the Lord!" Indeed, the "beloved disciple" was the first to recognize the Lord whom he loved. His heart stirred, he exclaimed without hesitation, “It is the Lord!” The Greek word κύριος (Kurios) is equivalent to the Hebrew Adonai. It is translated as “Lord” in English because devout Jews dare not pronounce the name of God, YHWH. In short, John recognized that the one before them was the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth!
2. Throwing Himself Toward the Savior
Once Peter saw the Lord, how could he delay? He responded immediately — true to his action-oriented nature. How timely is your response to the Lord? If you knew it was the Lord who called you, would you still delay? Still say, "Maybe later"?
3. Following with the World in Tow
As for the other disciples, they didn’t forget the net full of large fish — worth quite a sum, possibly enough for many days' living expenses! Though they saw the Lord of heaven and earth, they felt they had to finish the task at hand first before going to Him. Are you the same?
“153 large fish!” There’s a hidden mystery within the number: 153 = "I am God" When the risen Lord let the disciples catch 153 fish, He was declaring to them — and to the world — "I am God!" The Hebrew expression is אָנֹכִי אֱלֹהִים (Ani Elohim, meaning “I am God”).
In Hebrew numerology, every letter has a numeric value: Ani (אָנֹכִי): 1 + 50 + 10 = 61,
Elohim (אֱלֹהִים): 92 = 40 +10 + 5 + 6 + 30 + 1, Therefore 61 + 92 = 153 pointing to “I am God!”
Also, the Greek word for "fish" is ἰχθύς — an acronym:
Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)
Χριστός (Christ)
Θεοῦ (of God)
Υἱός (Son)
Σωτήρ (Savior)
The Lord Jesus can show Himself in our daily lives as our Lord and our God. We must focus and rely wholly on Him.
What does it feel like to stand before the Almighty Creator God? Once you understand, there’s no need to ask further. The Lord issued a call of love, asking His disciples to respond by rising up to shepherd! Isn't it the same today? If you love the Lord, then rise and shepherd His people!
1. Follow Even Unto Death (V18–19)
Brave Peter, having risen from failure, firmly resolved in his heart to follow the Lord even to death.
2. Each One Must Follow the Lord (V20–23)
The Lord calls each person to follow Him. Don’t meddle and wonder about others — take care of yourself and reflect on your own calling!
Are you also a witness who loves the Lord?
