Introduction:

We see how God manifested His power and grace in David's life.

1. God prospered David's kingdom (V1-7)

a. God established David as king (V1-2)

God's establishment of David as king is evidenced by the fact that David had established good diplomatic relations with the other kingdoms. However, God did not give David honour and glory to prosper his kingdom for his personal benefit alone, but "for his own people Israel"! Therefore, when we achieve something, we should realise that it is a gift from God, and that it is to enable us to better help others and to glorify God.

b. God blessed David's family (V3-7)

Despite David's lustful weakness, God still had mercy and blessed him with a multitude of children. However, David's polygamy (which was not in line with God's standard of monogamy) increased his power and influence, but it also caused discord in his family, jealousy and strife, and even murder.

2. God gives David victory over his enemies (V8-17)

The Philistines were a people whose military technology was superior to that of Israel. The Philistines were known for their toughness in their day and were a constant threat to the nations. Saul fought against them and lost. But we see that God gave David the victory! This is clearly a sign of the success of David's kingship.

a. God put his enemies in David's hands (V8-12)

David did not go to war with all that he had and all that he could do, but first "inquired of God"; and when God promised that he could go, he went. Here we can see that not only did David seek God in all things when he was pursued by Saul in the wilderness, but he also seeks God in all things now that he is sitting on the throne as king. Therefore, when we face challenges, we should also seek God's help and guidance first.

b. God went before David to attack his enemies (V13-17)

After the failure of the first attack on Israel the Philistines returned. But instead of following the success of the previous attack and naturally attacking them head-on, David asked God again. As a result, this time God did not ask David to meet them head on, but asked him to launch a surprise attack from the rear to cut off the Philistines' retreat route, for God wanted to completely disrupt the Philistines' power.

David modelled for us that when we are faced with a new challenge or task, we may be inclined to rely on past experiences and methods. However, we should be humble enough to seek God's guidance once again, rather than relying on past experiences in a self-righteous manner.

Conclusion: Seek God in all things

Let each of us realise that the source of achievement and blessing comes from God. And, in every day's life, continue to rely on God's guidance and grace, and give glory to God whether we face good or bad times, and witness God's greatness and love through our actions and lives, so that we will continue to be blessed by God.
