Introduction: An arrogant soldier will be defeated

1. David’s Weakness

(1) Not having a continuously alert mind (V1)

A year later, when they were harvesting, the same enemy came again. Same day, same enemy, but David seems to have underestimated the enemy. The scriptures record that when the kings went to war, it was no longer David who fought in person, but Joab who led the army to capture Rabbah. David stayed in Jerusalem, and "2 Samuel" records that during this period he leisurely paraded on the flat roof of the palace, saw Bathsheba bathing, and ended up committing adultery with her. 1 Chronicles completely ignores this period of history.

King David believed that he had secured his throne and that his power and military strength had reached the peak, so he ignored the importance of capturing Rabbah. Success and comfort often make people lose their alertness, making it easier for the flesh to take over.

(2) Failure to remain grateful and humble (V2-3)

This chapter has a slightly different flavour from the previous chapters. There is a bit of pride when David and the army receive the golden crown. In the past, he chose to cut off the chariot horses' tendons and consecrate all the gold, silver and spoils and offer to God. But this time, he chose to display the spoils, especially the crown symbolising strength, and also took a lot of goods. However, the scriptures do not describe how to deal with these properties, nor do they see the scene of offering sacrifices to God after victory.

People sometimes become accustomed to certain things, gradually take grace for granted, and forget to continue to be grateful and humble. As a result, it becomes increasingly difficult to be grateful, and we gradually live in the present moment for granted. Eventually, life may go astray without us realising it. This is indeed worthy of our deep reflection.

2. God is faithful and keeps his covenant (V4-8)

The second section of the passage begins with "later" and describes the period of David's adultery with Bathsheba and Absalom's rebellion. Chapter 21 of "2 Samuel" records that during this period, King David's courage and strength were no longer what they used to be. He was even almost killed by a giant, but his followers would not let him go to war again. Therefore, in today’s fourth verse, David’s name is omitted and replaced by the names of his mighty warriors.

Although David's weakness brought turmoil to the country, God still fulfilled His promise to bring peace to Israel and helped David establish a peaceful kingdom so that he could rise up and build the temple. This shows God’s faithfulness and mercy, and God still keeps His covenant.

Conclusion: Be effortless but don’t be undaunted, be humble and grateful, stay alert and continue to win!
