1 Samuel 16 God is the scriptwriter and director of Life on Stage

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan
Introduction:
A wonderful movie often has unexpected creativity and varied scripts; isn't the stage of life like this?
1. God will replace the vessel with a new one (16:1)
(1) Don't be a king detested by God (V1a)
The prophet Isaiah once said: "The God of wisdom... will not call back His words..." (Isaiah 31:2). The apostle Paul also said: " For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." (Romans 11:29) However, here we see that God rejected Saul, whom He had originally chosen. We know from the previous chapter that the reason was Saul’s disobedience. We must pay attention to our mentality and our reaction to those in authority, so as not to be rejected by God like Saul!
(2) To be God's chosen ones (V1b)
There are lessons to be learned from both Samuel and David. When Samuel was going to find a new king, God didn't directly say who that person was? Only when people get up and take action can they be discovered slowly. Isn’t this the mode of interaction between God and man? Moreover, among the eight brothers of Jesse's family, David was not an outstanding child; but perhaps his simplicity and trust in God became the reason why he was chosen by God. In the process of life, there are lessons for us to learn from God in everything.
2. The way to choose and anoint a new king (16:2-13)
(1) The prophet seeks in every step (V2-5)
When Saul was still in power, the prophet wanted to anoint a new king. This was a great act of rebellion, wasn’t it? Behaviour that does not conform to the reality, so the prophet needs to act step by step according to God's instructions.
When we are faced with judgments on major events in our lives, how can we not pay attention to seek God's instructions and guidance?
(2) Inquire one by one on the ground (V6-10)
Why didn't God directly tell the prophet that David, the youngest son, was the new king he was going to anoint, but had to go and check them one by one? In terms of appearance, the eldest son was tall and mighty, and he looked like a king at first glance, but God said no! Therefore, it brings out the difference between the eyes of man and the eyes of God. Man sees the appearance and God sees the heart. God does not judge people by appearance, and we must also learn from God's perspective.
(3) Don't miss the kid (V11-13)
David was very young at the time and seemed not to be valued by his father. In such a solemn feast of a prophet's visit, how could David not be included in the plan? Don't you know that David is God's chosen vessel. In the end, David experienced being anointed and led by the Holy Spirit, and continued to move towards his destiny in life.
3. God is the stage director of life (16:14-23)
(1) Anointing left, demon invades (V14)
After David received the king's anointing, the original "king's anointing" of the Holy Spirit was transferred to David. And once Saul lost the Spirit of God, the evil spirits immediately had the authority to invade Saul and disturb Saul. It can be seen from this that Christians who have the presence of the Holy Spirit are wonderful, because once people lose the presence of God, the evil one will take control of people's lives at any time.
(2) Harp and music chase away demons (V15-17)
Playing music can drive away evil spirits? Is it some instrument or some piece of music? Obviously not, but the person who plays the instrument, and the content of the music is related to the presence of God's glorious power. Some people may have seen David playing with the glory of God's presence, even the evil spirits could not stand. So, he had this opportunity and recommended it to King Saul. Just like blowing a shofar is also a spiritual instrument and weapon, with the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit behind it.
(3) God prepared to introduce David (V17-23)
Samuel’s anointing David is one aspect of David's stage of life; King Saul being disturbed by evil spirits is another aspect of Saul's stage of life, and the two have nothing to do with each other. But God has long seen that David, a God-fearing vessel, will one day replace Saul, and when the time comes, God will let the two be drawn together. For future needs, the same stage will appear at this time. Sure enough, David started to contact King Saul for the future throne.
There are many coincidences in stage of life, but they appeared for future needs! We need to live under the guidance of God all the time.
Conclusion: Actors who interact freely with the scriptwriter and director
Although God is the scriptwriter and director of life on the stage, we are the actors in it. But the director of life gives us the right to freely choose the way to play. What kind of development and ending we want depends on how we choose and cooperate with the requirements of the "greatest scriptwriter and director of life".
