Introduction: Parenting treasures

In today's society, many new parents begin to actively read many "parenting treasures" before their children are born, in the hope that their children will grow up healthy and happy, and that they will develop physically and spiritually.

In fact, the Bible is full of wisdom for raising children. Today we will learn what it means to teach love from the ridiculous story of the two "little brats" of Eli the high priest.

1. Parents are to take pleasure in total devotion (v1-10)

When Hannah had God’s heart as her heart, her mind shifted from her own needs to God’s heart. When God’s heart rejoices, her heart is happy in the LORD; it becomes her greatest joy that her children can become vessels fit for God’s use.

Hannah gave her most beloved child to the Lord for life, not only she did not resist to let go because of having no child for a long period of time but she rejoiced in the salvation of the Lord.

Hannah’s prayers are all about taking pleasure in the attributes of God
1. God is glorious V1
2. God is the Most Holy V2
3. God is wisdom V3
4. God is authority V4
5. God is provision V5-8
6. God is faithful V9-10

2. The child in spoilage (V11-17)

Eli's children were the children of the high priest and the priests of the day. But they all behaved as wicked men who did not know God. They disobeyed God's law, despised the sacrifices to God, and even consorted with the lady who waited at the door of the tabernacle.

Eli let these two sons go unchecked for so long that they ended up not taking God into account at all, and even used their priestly position and authority to embezzle the people's offerings to God. Perhaps Eli thought it was a sign of "respect" for his sons that he left them alone, but that actually made the children higher than the truth of God.

3. The child offered up for God (V18-21, 26)

Samuel was a son and a child set apart for God by his mother. Although young, he was a young priestly assistant who was set apart for God and served God with his father, and grew up in God's favour.

In the way of a child's growth, God's leadership inside is more important than the outside environment; helping the child to build an intimate relationship with God and allowing the child to grow up in the presence of the Lord is more important than just instilling knowledge.

4. The fault of the father for not raising a child (V22-25, 27-34)

(1) Eli who indulged his children (V22-25)

It was only when Eli was very old that he heard about his two sons’ treatment of the people of Israel, showing that he was an absentee father who had never taken the initiative to communicate with his children. When he found out, it was too late, for the children’s rebellious hearts could not be turned back.

(2) The consequences of leaving them alone (V27-34)

Although Eli knew of his children's faults, he had no other discipline than to persuade them with words. He was not only a father of men, but also a high priest, who turned a blind eye and continued to coddle his sons and leaving them alone.

He knew what was wrong and still let things go on, thus sinning with the wrongdoer. In the end God's judgement was not just on his sons, but on the whole family.

Conclusion: God delights in those who faithfully do His will. (V35-36)

Parents are to lead by example and take pleasure in God. To teach our children to love God and to allow His Word to lead the way in raising our children. Trusting His truth will bring abundant blessings to fill our homes!
