2 Chronicles 5:The Glory of God Fills the Temple
GK611 Morning Devotion 07 October 2025 Speaker: Rev David Tan Introduction: Today marks the first day of the Feast of Tabernacles in the year 5786… Our reading is from 2 Chronicles 5, which records the solemn occasion following Solomon's completion of the temple, where the Ark of the Covenant was carried into the Holy of Holies. The glory of God's presence filled the Temple. The Feast of Tabernacles symbolizes God’s desire to dwell among His people! I. The Ark Must Enter the Temple of God (5:1-10) 1. The King Proceeds According to the Regulations (v1) The gold and silver were what David had prepared for the Lord, and now they were ‘placed in the treasuries of the house of God.’ All blessings, wealth, gifts, and achievements must ultimately be returned to God. The ‘treasury’ symbolizes the storehouse of God’s Kingdom (Mal. 3:10), reminding us to store up the riches of our lives in heaven (Matt. 6:19–21). God values not merely what we ‘produce,’ but whether we ‘return the harvest to Him.’ Completion is not the end but an offering; true glory is found in ‘giving it back to God’. 2. Leaders United in Welcoming the Ark (v2–5) The united reception of the ark by the leaders, especially before the Feast of Trumpets, signifies that the foremost festival preceding the new year begins with welcoming God’s presence. Here, national leaders, tribal chieftains, religious leaders and members, namely priests and Levites—jointly managed the establishment of the Temple. This shows that on God’s appointed day, everyone must align their focus and actions with His will. 3. The Ark is the Centre of the Temple (v6-10) ‘An abundance beyond measure’ was offered! This is not an exaggerated figure but expresses a spirit of unreserved devotion. Valuing God's glory, they willingly presented their very best. Spiritually, this symbolises the believer's total surrender: offering time and life, worship and thanksgiving, obedience and love. The Ark symbolizes the presence of God, the very center of worship in the Temple. Inside the Ark were only the tablets of the covenant, reminding Israel that the foundation of worship is God’s Word and His covenant. Likewise, the center of the Church’s worship today is not ritual or form, but ‘Christ and the Word of God’. II. The Ministry of Priests and Levites (5:11-13a) 1. The Priests Consecrated Themselves Regardless of Divisions (v11) ‘The priests had consecrated themselves.’ They served not by virtue of office, but through lives of purity. This embodies a spiritual principle: ‘God's glory does not dwell in unclean places’. Self-purification signifies being set apart, detached from worldly and sinful defilement. Holiness is the key to entering God's presence. However magnificent the temple, if those who serve within it are not holy, it remains an empty edifice. Before undertaking spiritual service, the most crucial factor is not talent, experience, or position, but a ‘pure heart.’ 2. The Levites' United Praise (v12-13a) The Levites, priests, musicians, and unified praise represent the highest form of earthly temple worship, foreshadowing the heavenly worship in Revelation 4–5: the elders and angels praising in unison, proclaiming ‘Holy, Holy, Holy!’ and ‘Worthy is the Lamb!’ This is a glimpse of heavenly glory for God's people. When they ‘praised with one accord,’ immediately ‘the temple of the Lord was filled with cloud.’ This ‘cloud’ signified the manifestation of God's glory—known as the ‘Shekinah Glory,’ His glorious presence—indicating God's acceptance of their worship and His personal dwelling among them. The power of worship lies not in musical skill, but in a united heart. When God's people lift Him up in one accord, He manifests His presence. III. The Temple Filled with the Glory of God (5:13b-14) When God's glory filled the temple, ‘even the priests could not stand to minister’! This signifies that even the most honoured and sacred among them could not continue their duties in the presence of God's glory. They could neither speak nor move, only prostrate themselves in silent reverence. This signifies: (1) All human service ceases before God; (2) Human status and ability lose all significance; (3) Only God's glory becomes the centre and focus. When God's glory truly descends, humans cannot ‘continue serving’—for God Himself takes charge. True worship is not about human effort, but God's complete sovereignty. Conclusion: God Dwells with His People in Worship The core of worship: God's covenant and word (the tablets in the Ark). The attitude of worship: Holiness, unity, and united praise. The outcome of worship: The glory of God's indwelling fills the space; human service steps aside, God alone is exalted and glorified.
