2 Chronicles 9:To What Extent Is Wisdom True Wisdom?
GK611 Morning Devotional 14 October 2025 Speaker: Rev David Tan Introduction: Some people often joke, “It’s fine to be capable — just don’t fake it!” Being clever and wise is a good thing, but when poorly wielded, cleverness may backfire and become one’s downfall! I. Wisdom Draws the Nations to Seek Understanding (2 Chr. 9:1–12) 1. Those who fear God possess surpassing wisdom (v1-2) God is the source of all wisdom. King Solomon asked God for wisdom, and he also inherited the godliness of the previous generation, passing down a beautiful spiritual heritage. As a result, he displayed extraordinary wisdom in real life. Isn’t this not something we all aspire to pursue? Because Solomon’s God is also our God—He is even our Abba Father! 2. Godly Wisdom Arouses Astonishment (v3-6) The Queen of Sheba was an exceptionally wealthy and unique monarch, especially since most rulers in ancient times were men. Moreover, the gifts she presented to Solomon revealed her immense riches. In other words, what worldly spectacle had she not witnessed? Yet the Scriptures describe her as being utterly astounded when she beheld all that Solomon possessed! This demonstrates that when one truly possesses Godly wisdom, even the most formidable individuals pale in comparison. 3. Glory That Testifies and Leads Others to Know God (v7–8) Even this foreign Queen of Sheba praised the Lord, acknowledging and accepting the God whom Solomon worshiped, didn’t she? When we genuinely experience God’s blessings, we too can draw the most exalted kings to follow our faith! 4. How Should We Respond to Glory? (v9–12) Though the Bible does not record whether Solomon directly “shared God” with the Queen of Sheba, his very presence powerfully manifested God's glory. If you too possess talents or riches envied by the world, will you become a ‘gospel’ witness who reveals God's glory? II. Divine Wisdom Brings Extraordinary Prosperity (2 Chr. 9:13-28) 1. Wisdom Manages Wealth that Reaches the Whole World (v13–21) Through these verses, we see how richly blessed Solomon truly was—he practically possessed the wealth of the entire world. Undeniably, this was the result of God’s wisdom granted to him. Should we not seek God’s wisdom? 2. Solomon Became the Richest Man of His Time (v22–28) Solomon could rightly be called the richest man in the world! Imagine—what would it be like to have such immense wealth? What would you do if you owned one billion US dollars? III. Even Forty Years of Glory Comes to an End (2 Chr. 9:29–31) The Bible says: “Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there.” (Job 1:21; 1 Timothy 6:7). In his forty-year reign, Solomon gained nearly all the world’s riches. Yet all that wealth merely paved his floors and covered his walls . Ultimately he lost everything, even failing to pass it on to a corrupt next generation. So, what was lacking in Solomon's wisdom? In chapter 8, during our GA morning devotion (also broadcast to GK), the preacher encouraged us greatly from a positive perspective. Yet there was a “hidden danger” within the passage, the key reason Solomon failed in his later years. 2 Chronicles 8:11 says: Now Solomon brought the daughter of Pharaoh up from the City of David to the house he had built for her, for he said, “My wife shall not dwell in the house of David king of Israel, because the places to which the ark of the Lord has come are holy.” This was the pivotal factor in his [awesome piety and dreadful downfall]. Conclusion: Learn from the Mistakes of the Past! We long for Solomon’s wisdom and his unparalleled prosperity. Yet let us not forget that with abundance come trials and temptations!
