2 Chronicles 19:God Can Turn “Loss” into “Gain”!
GK611 Morning Devotion 30 October 2025 Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew I. God’s Rebuke Is to Restore People (2 Chr 19:1–3) 1. Returning Safely by God’s Grace (V1) Jehoshaphat originally feared God, but he made a grave mistake—he allied himself with Ahab, a king who did not fear God, and went to battle with him. As a result, Ahab died, and Jehoshaphat narrowly escaped death. That he was able to return to Jerusalem “in peace” was purely by God’s grace. God did not abandon him because of his failure; instead, He gave him another chance to “return in peace and start anew.” We are often like Jehoshaphat—wanting to do what’s right but choosing the wrong partners or paths, and thinking it’s all over. Yet God says, “It’s not over, because I have not given up on you!” He is not the God who shuts the door after failure, but the loving Father who keeps His arms open, waiting for the prodigal to come home. 2. A Rebuke That Warns and Encourages (V2–3) Through the prophet Jehu, God’s rebuke to Jehoshaphat carried two purposes: a warning and an encouragement. Together, they form what we might call the grace of rebuke—a correction rooted in love, meant to draw the lost back to Him. We must learn to gratefully receive God’s rebuke, because to be rebuked by God means God has not given up on us! II. From Being Rebuked to Being Restored (2 Chr 19:4–11) 1. Standing in the Right Place and Doing the Right Thing (V4) “Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem” symbolizes his return to God’s presence—he stood once again in the right position before God. Then he “went out among the people,” actively leading them back to God—taking the right actions from the right place. After failure, people often fall into two extremes: self-condemnation or pretending nothing happened. True restoration begins with quietly returning to God, because only when we stand in the right place we can do the right things. 2. Establishing Justice to Display God’s Righteousness (V5–7) Jehoshaphat then reformed the nation’s judicial system. He appointed judges—not to strengthen his own rule, but to restore God’s righteousness—because judgment belongs to the Lord, not man. Today, each of us also exercises judgment in our own areas of life. But what is the motive behind our decisions—for ourselves, for others, or for the Lord? 3. Serving with Reverence and Faithfulness (V8–11) Jehoshaphat not only established systems but also set spiritual standards. External justice must be upheld by inner reverence. Thus he reminded the judges to fear God and act faithfully. God does not demand perfection from us; He calls us to be reverent and faithful. Reverence keeps us aligned with His standards; faithfulness means doing what is right even when no one is watching. Conclusion: No matter what we have lost—our direction, confidence, opportunities, or sense of worth—if we repent and return, God can turn our “loss” into “gain.” For He is the God whose rebuke carries grace, whose brokenness leads to rebuilding, and whose failure brings forth resurrection!
