当我们在信仰中学会全然信靠,不论身处高山或低谷,都能经历那位信实不变的神的同在!2 Chronicles Chapter 25: The Tragedy of Half-Hearted FaithGK611 Morning Devotion 11.11.2025 Speaker: Pastor Stella Ling Introduction: The ‘Purity’ of Faith I. Initial Obedience, Yet Not Wholehearted (2 Chronicles 25:1-13) 1. Observing the Law, Yet Without a Whole Heart (v1-4) Scripture records: “Amaziah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly.” He outwardly obeyed God’s laws and appeared devout, but his motives were rooted in political stability and cultural tradition, rather than genuine love for God. The crisis of spiritual life often begins here—when our actions are correct, but our hearts grow cold; when we appear pious, but lack the burning love for God. Faith is not religious habit but relationship; God desires our hearts, not mere formality. 2. Heeding Counsel, Sending Away the Army (v5-10) Amaziah hired 100,000 Israelite warriors for battle, but the man of God warned him: do not rely on those Israelites whom God has rejected. Though he feared losing 100 talents of silver, he chose to obey God’s instruction, dismissed and sent them back. This was an exercise in faith—he learned to trust God’s promise: “The Lord is able to give you much more than this. ” Obedience often comes at a cost, yet God never fails those who trust Him. 3. Victorious in Battle, Yet Leaving Trouble Behind (v11-13) God granted Amaziah victory; he defeated Edom with great success. However, the dismissed Israelite soldiers, discontented, attacked the cities of Judah, causing immense destruction. Obedience to God does not always make life easier, but it ensures we walk in His presence. II. After Victory, Trapped by Idolatry (2 Chronicles 25:14-16) 1. Pride Leads to Worshiping False Gods (v14) After defeating Edom, Amaziah brought back their idols and bowed down to them. Victory filled him with pride, leading him to believe he could control God's blessings. Yet man's greatest idol is often himself. When glory is directed toward oneself, faith loses its true focus. 2. Hardening His Heart, Rejecting Warning (v15-16) Out of mercy, God sent a prophet to warn Amaziah. But he arrogantly retorted, " Cease! Why should you be killed?" From listening and obeying to rejecting warnings, this was the trajectory of his spiritual decline. Pride deafens the ears to truth, and stubbornness distances one from grace. When God rebukes us, we must receive it with a humble, teachable heart. Without repentance, every reminder becomes judgment. III. Relying on Own Strength, Bringing About His Own Destruction (25:17-28) 1. Pride leads to provoking neighbouring country (v17-19) After conquering Edom, Amaziah challenged King Joash of Israel. Joash replied with a parable of the thistle and the cedar: when the thistle tried to compete with the cedar, it was trampled. But Amaziah refused to listen and insisted on battle. 2. Defeated and Humiliated (v20-24) God delivered him into defeat. Israel invaded Jerusalem, broke down its walls, and plundered the temple’s gold, silver, and vessels. Partial faith yielded not partial blessing, but utter disgrace. 3. Abandoned by all, ending in tragedy (v25-28) After his defeat, Amaziah fled to Lachish, where he was ultimately assassinated by his own servants. Having been unfaithful to God, he found others equally unfaithful to him. One who does not trust God wholeheartedly will also struggle to gain the trust and loyalty of others. Conclusion: The Call from ‘Half-Hearted’ to ‘Wholehearted’ Amaziah's problem lay not in his actions, but in his heart. He did good deeds half-heartedly, obeyed with conditions, and grew complacent in victory. His tragedy reminds us: God does not accept ‘half-hearted’ worship. He demands love with ‘all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.’ When we learn to trust God wholeheartedly, in both mountaintops and valleys, we will experience the faithful and unchanging presence of our God!
