2 Chronicles 28:The Faith That Brings Self-Destruction
GK611 Morning Devotion 14 Nov 2025 Speaker: Stella Ling Introduction: The direction of faith determines the course of destiny I. The Beginning of Misplaced Faith (2 Chronicles 28:1-8) 1. Emulating the World, Straying from the Truth (v1-2) Ahaz followed the wicked ways of the kings of the northern kingdom, casting images of Baal and forsaking the godly example set by David. Misplaced faith often begins not with outright rejection of God, but by emulating flawed role models. Today’s world frequently packages faith as a “tool for success”, which fundamentally places “self” in God's position, shifting the focus of faith from reliance upon God to the fulfilment of self. 2. Following Pagan Practices, Abominable Conduct (v3-4) Ahaz burned his children in the fire and offered sacrifices in unholy places, distorting faith into a tool for personal lusts. Once faith becomes a means to “manipulate God”, it loses its true essence. Today's idols may be money, career, or family; sacrificing truth and worship for these is to repeat Ahaz's tragedy. 3. Inviting Discipline, National Decline (v5-8) God permitted Judah's to be defeated by Aram and Israel, demonstrating that false faith inevitably brings tangible consequences. Idols offer no true protection; only reliance on God provides steadfastness. Divine discipline aims to awaken repentance, not to inflict destruction. II. Deepening of Spiritual Deviation (2 Chronicles 28:9-15) 1. The Prophet's Rebuke Reveal Sin (v9-11) The prophet Oded declared that Israel's victory stemmed from God's discipline, not their own strength, reminding them they too were sinners. Even in judgment, God opened the door of grace, calling them to repentance. The Holy Spirit continually speaks to us through Scripture, conscience, or others' reminders, guiding us back to the right path. 2. The Leaders’ Obedience Demonstrates Mercy (v12-15) The Israelite leaders heeded the prophet's counsel, treating the captives with mercy by providing food, clothing, and escorting them home. Obedience to God's word overcomes emotional impulses and self-interest, enabling one to become a vessel of His grace. Within the church, those who err should be restored through loving kindness rather than cold judgement. III. The Collapse of Faith and Its Consequences (2 Chronicles 28:16-27) 1. Relying on a Strong Nation, Only to Be Oppressed (v16-21) Ahaz turned to Assyria for aid, only to be humiliated; worshipping the gods of the enemy nation exposed the utilitarian nature of his faith. Relying on worldly powers inevitably leads to exploitation; only reliance on God provides true security. 2. Desecrating the Temple, Sealing the Path Home (v22-25) Ahaz destroyed the temple vessels and barred the temple doors, symbolising a complete severance from God. If faith exists solely to secure benefits, it becomes worship of false gods; closing one’s heart to God inevitably leads to spiritual death. 3. A Tragic End, Rejected by God (v26-27) Ahaz was not buried in the royal tombs after his death, signifying God’s refusal to acknowledge his divine lineage. Persisting in unrepentance until the end is choosing eternal separation from God. Conclusion: Faith Determines the Outcome May God awaken us from Ahaz's tragedy to turn to the Lord Jesus the One who opened the way of life through the cross. Only in Him can our faith lead us to eternal life rather than destruction.
