Esther 3: God Has a Greater Plan

Introduction:
Mordecai’s refusal to bow appeared to ignite a crisis that threatened the extermination of an entire people, but in reality it opened the door to God’s hidden and far greater plan of victory.

I. The Enemy Is Exalted, and Crisis Arises (Esther 3:1–6)

1. Haman Promoted by the King (vv. 1–2)
King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite, elevating him above all the officials and requiring all the king’s servants to bow down to him. The Agagites were descendants of the Amalekites, long-standing enemies of Israel.

At times, God allows the wicked to be exalted temporarily in order to expose their pride and to test whether His people will remain faithful in that moment.

2. Mordecai’s Public Refusal to Bow (vv. 2–4)
Mordecai openly refused to bow to Haman in the presence of the king’s
officials at the gate. He was not seeking attention or showing off; as a Jew, he bowed to God alone.

Publicly holding fast to one’s faith requires courage—and it is precisely this courage that opens the way for God’s greater work.

3. A Plot Fuelled by Escalating Rage (vv. 5–6)
Haman was “filled with fury.” When he discovered that Mordecai was a Jew, his hatred snowballed from targeting one man to devising an evil plan to annihilate an entire people.
God warns us to stop hatred at its starting point and not let it “snowball.” Though the wicked may prosper for a time, they will ultimately be fully exposed and removed by God.

II. The Plot Takes Shape: Legalized Genocide (Esther 3:7–11)

1. Casting Pur (Lots) to Fix the Date (v. 7)
Haman cast lots to choose an auspicious day—about a year later—to destroy the Jews, unaware that everything remained in God’s hands. That year of waiting was God’s time to prepare hearts and arrange a great reversal.

2. A “Perfect” Lie to Deceive the King (vv. 8–9)
Haman disguised his personal vendetta as a matter of national interest, deceiving the king with lies and money.

God reminds us not to be stirred up by well-packaged lies, but to respect differences and stand firm in the truth.

3. A Rash King Grants Authority to Destroy (vv. 10–11)
Without investigation, the king handed over the power of life and death to hatred-driven Haman, revealing his recklessness and failure of responsibility. Authority given by God is not to be used arbitrarily, but to uphold justice and extend mercy.

III. A Panicked City and the Hidden God (Esther 3:12–15)

1. The Decree of Slaughter Takes Effect (vv. 12–14)
The royal edict to annihilate the Jews was issued in the king’s name and spread throughout the empire. The extermination order officially took effect.

What appears to be a dead end to human eyes is never an unchangeable situation to God—there is no hopeless crisis that He cannot overturn for those who trust Him.

2. Rulers Indifferent to the People’s Panic (v. 15)
A stark contrast is drawn: the rulers sit drinking, while the people are thrown into chaos and fear. This is the cruellest face of sin—it numbs the perpetrators and leaves the victims helpless and desperate.
The chapter ends in false celebration. God may seem silent, but He is not absent; He is quietly arranging a glorious reversal.

Conclusion: Our “public stand” is often a crucial part of God’s plan.

When we stand for the truth, the God who seems hidden yet rules over all stands with us—and He will use us to accomplish His greater purposes.
