Esther 10: The Ultimate Sovereign Ruler Behind History
GK611 Morning Devotion 28.01.2026 Speaker:Ps Stella Ling Introduction:Who Is in Control of Your Life? I. Earthly Power Is Limited (Esther 10:1) 1. Royal Authority at Its Peak Esther chapter 10 opens by describing King Ahasuerus at the height of his power. He imposed tribute on the people of the land and the islands of the sea, emphasizing the vast scope of his rule and influence. From a human perspective, he resembles today’s global superpower leaders—commanding immense resources, wealth, and authority. Throughout the book, we see how with one burst of anger he deposed a queen, with one signature he ordered the annihilation of an entire people, and with one decree his command spread across 127 provinces. Almost no one could oppose him. This is the kind of power many people dream of attaining. 2. History Does Not Linger Yet what is striking is that Scripture does not continue to praise the king’s achievements. Instead, after briefly mentioning his power, the narrative comes to an end. The Bible deliberately shifts the focus away, because the point is not how great the king was, but to remind us that even the greatest power is not 0the final word in history. From a historical perspective, this king later suffered defeat, his empire declined, and he eventually died. Scripture reminds us that earthly status, achievements, and glory are ultimately temporary, and true, unshakable security cannot be built on such things. II. God Exalts the Faithful (Esther 10:2) 1. Position Reversed by God The focus of verse 2 shifts dramatically from the king to Mordecai—a powerful contrast. Mordecai was originally just a Jew sitting at the city gate, with no background, no influence, and no power. He experienced neglect, humiliation, and crisis. Yet at the critical moment, God reversed his circumstances and had his name recorded in the history of the empire. The book of Esther repeatedly shows that God’s turning points often occur in very short moments: a sleepless night, a rediscovered record is enough to change a person’s entire life. 2. A Name Remembered by God Being written into the historical records was certainly an honor for Mordecai, but what was even more precious was that he was remembered by God. He did not perform dramatic or sensational deeds, yet at crucial moments he chose faithfulness: refusing to compromise with power, caring for his people in times of crisis, and supporting others within God’s plan. These choices may not have seemed rewarding in the short term, but they were never overlooked by God. God’s promotion often comes after long seasons of faithfulness with no applause. III. Salvation Brings Peace (Esther 10:3) 1. Exalted for the Benefit of Others After being exalted, Mordecai did not indulge in power. Instead, he “sought the welfare of his people.” His high position became a channel of blessing to others. Like Joseph and Daniel, the position God grants is not the destination, but a stewardship. When status, resources, and influence stop with ourselves, they breed pride; when they flow outward to others, they become a blessing. 2. Authority That Accomplishes Peace The final verse tells us that Mordecai “spoke peace to them all.” This peace was not merely outward calm, but genuine peace gained after facing the threat of death—security restored, identity recovered, and hearts brought to rest. This is the biblical shalom, the ultimate goal of God’s saving work. Conclusion: Trust the Sovereign Behind the Scenes Esther chapter 10 reveals three truths: earthly power will pass away, but God remembers the faithful; God’s exaltation is not for personal glory, but to bring peace to the community. When the ending of life’s story has not yet been revealed, the One truly worthy of our trust is not those who seem to control circumstances, but the ultimate Sovereign who rules behind history—and reigns in our lives.
