Deuteronomy 1: Reviewing History And Learning From It

Introduction:

Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Pentateuch, the title of which means 'reciting the law once more'.

It is a book in which Moses tells the second generation of Israel the commandments of God again, as God commanded, in order that they may learn from history and receive God's law as a rule for their future actions.

1. God Used Moses to Reaffirm the Law (V1-18)

(1) Preparing the new man to enter the promise (V1-8)

After the Israelites had wandered in the wilderness for forty years after the exodus from Egypt, Moses taught the new generation of Israelites the Law and told them to go to the Promised Land, as God had commanded. This command was new to the new generation of Israelites, so Moses taught them that the only way to face and cross the unknown future was to believe God's promises and keep His law!

(2) Reaffirming the law of the administration of the people (V9-18)

This passage is a review of the process of setting up the administration of the people by Moses at that time. Moses saw the promise of God to the fathers of the Israelites to increase the number of people. Then Moses chose wise and competent leaders from the people according to their own knowledge, and set up captains of thousands, hundreds and ten to govern them and to rule the land. After these governors were appointed to their positions of authority, they were required to judge in righteousness (V16), and not to bend the law for personal gain. For judgment is of God, and a righteous God will not show favouritism! Here Moses reiterated the law of governing the people, that they might move forward to the Promised Land of Canaan with perfect administration.

2. Learning Lessons from the History (V19-33)

(1) To see the difficulties with the eyes of God (V19-28)

Instead of responding to Moses' words to get to the Promised Land, the people suggested that Moses send spies to spy out the land. When Moses, the leader, heard this, he said, 'The plan pleased me well', and sent twelve spies to spy out the land. As a result, except for Caleb and Joshua, the other ten spies reported negative news. The same eyes see the same things, yet different people will come to very different conclusions. Only when you see difficulties with God's eyes will you have the confidence to see the end of victory by relying on God!

(2) To respond to God's promises by faith (V29-33)

At that time when the people came out of Egypt, God was leading them as a bearer of sons. But now they preferred to listen to the evil information reported by the ten spies rather than trust God. This is also a reminder to us not to trust the words of men, but to firmly believe in the word of God, and to respond to God's promises with faith in order to have victories.

3. The Severe Cost of Unbelief in God (V34-46)

The unbelief of the Israelites angered God. When God wanted them to fight, they shrank back; when He did not want them to fight, they fought without permission. The sin of unbelief and rebellion deprived them of the blessings God had prepared.

Moses used this historical event to teach the new generation of Israel and us today that faith and unbelief are the choice between eternal life and eternal death!

Conclusion:

The history of the Israelites is also a reflection of our faith journey. There are various factors that contribute to the blessings and failures in life, but it all boils down to the willingness to trust God and submit to His will.
