Exodus 26
God Desires to Dwell Among His People

Introduction: God’s Desire to Dwell with Man

Through the Tabernacle, God revealed His desire to dwell among His people, leading, protecting, and blessing them.

I. The Curtains and Coverings—Covering and Protection (Exodus 26:1-14)

1. The Tabernacle Curtains: Covering God’s Presence (v1-6)

The presence of the veil signified the separation between God and man, yet it also served as a sign of His presence. In the Old Testament, only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place once a year to atone for the sins of Israel. However, in the New Testament, when Jesus Christ died, the veil was torn, allowing us direct access to God.

2. The Tabernacle Coverings: Protecting God’s Dwelling (v7-14)

Besides the veil, God instructed Moses to layer the Tabernacle with various materials for protection. The outer coverings were made of goat hair, ram skins dyed red, and porpoise skins (v7-14). These layers symbolized God’s covering and protection.

II. The Boards and Bars—A Strong Structure (Exodus 26:15-30)

1. The Tabernacle Boards and Sockets: Supporting God's Glory (v15-25)

The walls of the Tabernacle were made of acacia wood boards, each fitted with two tenons that were inserted into silver sockets, ensuring the structure remained firm and immovable. Beyond being a structural design, this conveys a spiritual message—teaching us how to establish a firm foundation in Christ. When we allow God to shape us, we become vessels fit for His use.

2. The Tabernacle Bars: Connecting God’s People (v26-30)

The Tabernacle was not only supported by vertical boards but also secured with bars to connect them, making the structure even stronger. These bars, passing through gold rings, held the boards together. This design symbolizes the unity of the church and the close connection between believers in Christ.

III. The Veil and the Screen—Holy Worship (Exodus 26:31-37)

1. The Tabernacle Veil: Separation of the Holy and the Common (v31-35)

The veil of the Tabernacle was made of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, finely woven linen, and embroidered with cherubim—representing God’s holiness. No one could enter God’s presence without being purified. However, when Jesus died on the cross, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom, signifying that believers could now enter God’s presence freely through faith in Christ. No longer bound by the law, we can boldly approach God’s throne of grace.

2. The Tabernacle Screen: The Way to God (v36-37)

The screen at the entrance was the only way into the Tabernacle, foreshadowing Jesus as the only way to the Father (John 14:6). The five pillars supporting the screen represent God’s grace, which allows us to enter His kingdom—not by our works but through Christ.

Conclusion: Becoming God’s Glorious Dwelling

Today, we are God’s temple. We must build our lives as a holy Tabernacle and a dwelling place for His glory. Therefore, we should:1. Purify our lives. 2. Let Christ reign in our hearts. 3. Remain in God’s presence.
