Ezra Chapter 2: The Name List of Those Returning to Rebuild the Temple
GK611 Morning Devotion 16/07/2025 The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel I. Leaders Are Listed First (Ezra 2:1–2) The first group of names recorded in this chapter are the leaders. God's plan for revival always begins with restoring leaders after His own heart. Every influential person must be aware of their identity. The same is true in today’s church—leaders must be clear about their appointment, position and role, so they can function effectively. II. Family Lineages and the Number of Returnees (Ezra 2:3–35) Everyone needed to know which family they belonged to and how many were in their household. Just like the church today—leaders need to know how many "sheep" are in the flock; otherwise, how would they know if there were any lost sheep? Through baptism, we are joined into God's family. When the world says, “You don’t matter,” God says, “I have engraved your name on the palms of my hands” (Isaiah 49:16). Regardless of our background, God places us in His kingdom and never forgets our name. Every church should clearly know how many believers and workers it has. Only then can there be proper organization instead of confusion. III. Different Roles, Each Serving in Their Position (Ezra 2:36–63) 1. People in Ministry Roles Serving in their respective roles (verse 36–58) God not only faithfully led His people back, but He also restored the holy order in His house. Whether priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, or temple servants—they each fulfilled their duty and served with one heart. Everyone who is moved to offer themselves for the work of the temple is remembered by God! 2. Unclear Identity—Service Suspended (verse 59–63) Some who returned wished to serve, but because their lineage was unclear and their identity uncertain, their service was temporarily halted. We must examine our spiritual identity. It's important not to forget who we are or what our calling is. When you forget your identity, your lifestyle may change and become “unworthy of your calling.” If you forget your duty, you may end up neglecting your responsibilities—or worse, failing your calling entirely. IV. Whole Being, Whole Families Building Whole Heartedly (Ezra 2:64–70) 1. The Entire Community Returned and Gave Whole heartedly (vv. 64–67) This section summarizes the total number of returnees. It wasn’t just individuals who returned, but entire families, communities, and possessions. Even the number of their livestock symbolizes that they bring all the living resources into God's plan. Faith shouldn't stop at “personal belief.” It should inspire whole communities to return and offer themselves together. 2. Leaders Took the Lead and Gave Willingly (vv. 68–70) The returning leaders led by example, giving willingly. They became a role model for the people. not only arriving in Jerusalem, but immediately offering their wealth to support the rebuilding of the temple. Faith is not just a response of footsteps, but also a financial commitment! Conclusion: Your name and mine can also be written in this “spiritual registry of temple builders”! Don’t just be a participant—be a builder!
