Ezra Chapter 8: Who Will Stand Up for God's House?
GK611 Morning Devotion 25/07/2025 The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Asher Introduction: Blind Box Faith vs God’s Calling I. Responding to the call is not just about showing up (Ezra 8:1–14) Ezra led the second group of Israelites back from Babylon, a total of about 1,500 men (excluding women and children). These people came from different tribes and families, and even included priests and royal descendants, indicating that they were clear about their spiritual identity and were willing to stand up publicly and respond to the call to return. Today’s church is not just lacking “numbers”, but “response”. Appearing in God’s house does not mean that we have dedicated ourselves. Because we see in the next verses that Ezra first saw that no one took the initiative to serve in God’s temple. God is not looking for bystanders, but followers who are willing to embark on the road. Are we willing to be the one who “belongs to God from name to life”? II. Serving the temple is everyone’s business (Ezra 8:15–20) When Ezra gathered everyone to prepare to set out, he looked carefully and found that there was no Levite! This was a group specially set up by God to serve the temple. He immediately sent people to search for them and eventually moved 38 Levites and 220 Nethinim to go with him. The deepest challenge is not the external enemies, but the absence of the people who should stand up in God’s house. The same is true for the church today: it is not that there is no one, but that no one sees himself as “that person”. Each of us, if we belong to the Lord, has the responsibility to build His house. Serving is not “helping”, but “identity”. III. True service begins with faith (Ezra 8:21–23) Ezra faced a four-month journey with women, children, and valuables. He could have asked the king of Persia to send troops for protection, but he was “ashamed” because he had testified to the king with faith. So he declared a fast, not relying on people, but only seeking God’s hand of grace. Today’s service is often torn between “faith and protection.” We say, “entrust to God”, but we find someone to arrange it as soon as possible; we say, “God will take care of it”, but we calculate the risks in our hearts. True service is to be willing to give glory to God, even if the cost is higher. Faith is not to ignore reality, but to give priority to God’s glory. IV. God’s commission cannot be rejected (Ezra 8:24–36) 1. Put God First Ezra entrusted the gold and silver vessels to the priests and Levites, saying, “You are holy to the Lord… The silver and gold are offered willingly.” The first step in serving God is not to arrange your own convenience, but to put God’s business first. The vessels that God wants to use must be sanctified first. 2. Be alert and guard Each person is responsible for more than 1 ton of valuables and must be alert and guard until the handover. God’s entrustment, whether spiritual or practical, needs to be strictly guarded. It is not just “having an account”, but “having a clear conscience”. God values our loyalty more than our performance. 3. Willingness These gold and silver were “given voluntarily by the king and the people.” A true offering is made willingly. If service is accompanied by comparison or calculation, it loses its spiritual fragrance. What the Lord values is not the amount, but whether we are willing. 4. Be law-abiding The priests and Levites faithfully escorted the gold and silver vessels to Jerusalem according to their assignments. After arriving, they did not rush to report their achievements but rested quietly for three days. On the fourth day, they weighed the gold and silver and handed them over one by one according to the weight, without any loss. Afterwards, these people helped the people and also provided for the needs of the temple, showing that their loyalty brought results. 5. God will protect us “The hand of our God protects us… He saves us from the hands of our enemies and from those who lie in wait for us.” God’s hand not only protects our property but also protects those who obey Him. The path of trusting in God may be less stable, but it is more glorious and real. Conclusion: God is not looking for perfect people, but for people who are willing to respond. He is not just looking for the 38 Levites and the 24 treasurers, He is looking for you today. Are you willing to be the "person who stands up" in His hands?
