Leviticus 1 Worship in Total Surrender
GK611 Morning Devotion 30.06.2026 Speaker: Rev David Tan Introduction to the Book 1. Background: This book is a ‘manual on worship and holy living’ given by God to His people. 2. Theme: The central message of the book is: ‘Be holy, for I AM HOLY.’ 3. Spiritual Significance: The sacrifices, the priesthood, and the Day of Atonement all foreshadow the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. I. God Calls People to Draw Near to Him (1:1–2) God called Moses from the Tabernacle, demonstrating that He takes the initiative in revealing Himself to people and preparing a way for them to draw near to Him. The offering of sacrifices is not a religious act performed by man, but an arrangement of God’s grace, enabling sinful people to come before Him through the means He has established. Today, we too can confidently approach the throne of grace because of Christ's redemption. We come not by our own efforts, but because God has graciously taken the initiative and, through Jesus Christ, has opened for us a new and living way. God desires to use those of us who have been cleansed by His grace, to call sinners to repentance, so that they may receive the Lamb’s atoning grace and redemption. You and I are His called witnesses! (When more people respond to God’s call and draw near to Him, the miracle of ‘city transformation’ takes place.) II. A Total Surrendered Burnt Offering (1:3–9) A burnt offering must consist of an animal without blemish, and the entire sacrifice must be burnt as an offering to God, symbolising complete dedication without reservation. This offering also foreshadows the blameless life of Jesus Christ, who gave Himself completely for the world. God likewise calls believers not merely to offer external gifts, but to dedicate their whole lives to Him, becoming a living sacrifice, a pleasing aroma. God deserves our very best. Believers are called not only to give their possessions but also to dedicate their lives, time, and gifts entirely to Him, living lives of wholehearted commitment. As it is written in Galatians 2:20: ‘I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Are we not all full-time people who live for the Lord?) III. God Accepts Willing Offerings (1:10–13) God permitted the people to offer sheep or goats as burnt offerings, demonstrating that He takes into account the varying abilities and circumstances of different individuals. Regardless of the size of the offering, as long as it is presented in accordance with God’s will and in faith, it will be accepted by Him. God does not value a person’s wealth, but rather a heart willing to obey and love Him; therefore, everyone can participate in worship and offering. God does not compare the extent of our means; He looks only to see whether we are willing and joyful in our giving. Regardless of the size of our gifts, they can all become offerings that please God. IV. God’s Grace Is Open to All (1:14–17) For the poor, God permits them to offer a turtle dove or a young pigeon as a burnt offering, demonstrating that no one would be excluded from draw near to God because of poverty. God’s grace knows no distinction between rich and poor, noble and humble; as long as one comes before Him with a sincere and reverent heart, one’s offering can become a ‘pleasing aroma’ that pleases Him. One must simply remember to remove all impurity, including the ‘crop’—the temporary storage of undigested food (v16). This also foreshadows that Christ’s salvation is open to all; everyone who is willing to believe in Him may be accepted. What God values is a pure heart that loves Him, and one that is humble and obedient to Him. Even with limited means, as long as it is offered sincerely, it can become a fragrant sacrifice in His sight. Conclusion: Man’s primary response to God is worship. The burnt offering points to Jesus Christ, who perfectly obeyed the Father and offered Himself completely for the salvation of the world. It also reminds believers today that true worship requires sincerity and obedience, and that our dedication to God should be without reservation. God accepts lives that are willingly and wholeheartedly offered to Him, rather than merely outward gifts of material value. Through the atoning sacrifice that God has graciously provided, we are able to draw near to Him. Therefore, our response should be a life of wholehearted worship, fully surrendered to the One who has loved us perfectly.
