Micah 1
Judgment will come to the whole earth

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:

The prophet Micah was an Old Testament prophet who lived about 2,600 years ago. The warnings he gave that time were just as real as they are when we read them today!

I. Who is like Jehovah (Micah 1:1)

II. God’s people have sinned (Micah 1:2-9)

1. God personally carries out judgment (V2-4)

2. The origin and punishment of sin (V5-7)

3. The prophet’s lament and warning (V8-9)

III. Every city must be on guard (Micah 1:10-16)

V10 " Beth Aphrah" means "house of dust"; "rolled in dust" forms a pun with its place name, implying inferiority and extreme sorrow.

V11 " Shaphir" = "beautiful city" → but "naked and shamed", a strong contrast between beauty and shame.
" Zaanan" = "the city of coming out" → but "dare not come out", forming irony.
" Beth Ezel" = "the house near" → but "nowhere to stand" or "cannot help", indicating isolation and helplessness.

V12 This is equivalent to saying: " Things go contrary to one's wishes, things are not going as planned, and there is no future...", because God intends to punish the sinning nation.
" Maroth" = "bitter place" → Residents hope for good but only get bitter fruit.
The disaster no longer stays at the border, but "comes to the gates of Jerusalem", indicating that the capital of the southern kingdom will also be affected.

V13 " Lachish" is a major military town in Judah, famous for its chariots.
Lachish was ironically told to "escape on fast horses" - military pride turned into humiliation.
"The daughters of Zion" = Jerusalem, the spread of sin "started from you", emphasizing that Lachish or the political centre of Judah caused religious degeneration.

V14 “Moresheth Gath” may be a variant of Micah’s hometown (Moresheth) → God said Judah would send a “farewell gift” (also means “marrying”).
“Achzib” = “lie” or “deception” → The name itself means “failed hope”, implying that the city cannot save the king.

V15 "Mareshah" = "conquer, win" → the result is "the conquered come".
"Adullam" is a cave city where David once fled; it symbolizes refuge, humiliation, and retreat.
"The honourable man" (original: glory) came to Adullam → refers to the royal family or leaders being forced to flee.

V16 Haircut and baldness: In ancient times, it symbolized extreme mourning and humiliation.
"Your beloved children" = It means that the offspring or people were taken away, which is a great tragedy.
"Like a vulture": The vulture is an ugly creature, symbolizing complete humiliation and disappointment.

Conclusion: How can we not confess our sins to God?

God is a righteous judge, but also a loving and merciful God! Is the end of man a blessing or a curse? It all depends on the choice of man! Therefore, we must "repent of the sin of abandoning the true God" for ourselves, our families, the church, the city, and the country! Otherwise, how can we escape disaster and judgment?
