Micah 5
Victory Comes Through Truly Trusting in God

GK611 Morning Devotion
17/06/2025
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:The Holy Spirit is guiding 611 Church's morning devotion to read the Book of Micah at this critical moment for a divine purpose!

I. Leaders Who Abuse Authority for Personal Gain (Micah 3:1–4)

I. A Prophecy of the Savior in the Midst of Darkness (Micah 5:1–5a)

1. A Prophecy of National Siege (v1)

When a nation is in distress, its leaders are the first to be struck. The term “judge of Israel” here may refer to the king at the time, possibly King Zedekiah, who was humiliated by the Babylonians. However, since the following verses clearly point to the prophecy of the Messiah, this verse may also foreshadow the suffering of Jesus Christ. The king suffered because of the nation's sin—but Christ suffered because of our sin.

2. A Prophecy of the Messiah’s Birth (v2–3)

The prophecy concerning the Messiah is remarkably precise. Standing on this side of history, we clearly see its fulfillment and are now living in the reality of God's promised salvation. As witnesses to God’s redemptive plan, we are called to rise and testify for the Lord—to become living witnesses of salvation in the midst of darkness!

3. A Prophecy of the Savior as Shepherd (v4–5a)

The Jewish people, having long suffered under political oppression, expected the coming Messiah to be a mighty king who would restore a physical kingdom to Israel. Yet, the Messiah came primarily as a Shepherd—to care for and tend to His people. What truly matters is not political power, but living a righteous and beautiful life under His shepherding.

II. God Chooses His People to Overcome Their Enemies (Micah 5:5b–6)

God will raise up seven shepherds and eight leaders. The number seven symbolizes completeness, while “shepherds” represent spiritual leaders. The addition of eight signifies a new beginning in political leadership. In most secular nations, leadership is centered around human political systems—but God desires His people to understand that a truly blessed nation must also be guided through spiritual shepherding and care. We are a church that emphasizes the “Tree of Life” living—not an elite academic institution.(In our children's ministry, there were times when some kids were obsessed with being first in everything and refused to lose to others—even getting into physical fights. When I found out, I encouraged the teachers to use the opportunity to teach them: Being first in grades is not the most important thing. Being first in love, first in kindness, first in care, first in helping others—these are the things that truly bring blessings, lead to a brighter future, and delight the heart of the Lord.)

The United Nations uses the second half of this verse as a declaration, expecting all nations to lay down their weapons, pick up farming tools, and only care about producing food instead of producing weapons for war. However, if it is not for God to reign as king as mentioned above, peace is only a dream, not a reality to be expected.

III. The Remnant Will Be Revived and Rise as a Mighty Army (Micah 5:7–15)

1. Who Are the Remnant

In the historical context, the remnant referred to those who returned from exile. But in today’s setting, it also points to the Jewish people who have survived and remain in the land of Israel. Are they not the very ones the Bible foretold as the “remnant”?

2. They Are Like a Lion

Whether God’s remnant has returned to the Promised Land or is still scattered among the nations, they carry a unique favor from the Lord. Their strength is likened to that of a young lion—powerful, bold, and set apart with an extraordinary influence.

3. God Will Purify His People

In the Old Testament era, the Israelites often fell into idolatry by following the practices of foreign nations. Yet the prophet foretold that God would remove sorceries and idols from among His people—and indeed, today, it is rare to see Jewish people engaging in pagan idol worship.

4. God Will Judge the Nations

God will cut off the enemies of His people and bring judgment upon the nations that oppose them. This is indeed being fulfilled before our eyes. Just look at the conflicts in the Middle East over the past two years—it is not difficult to see how events are unfolding just as the Bible has foretold.

Conclusion:

His promises remain ever true and fresh through all generations. As long as we walk according to His ways, His promises will never fail! A truly blessed life depends on this: How deeply do we trust God? How fully do we live out the life of the Tree of Life?
