Psalm 34
I Know Who Is With Me

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Asher
We often think that peace comes from a stable environment. But true peace does not come from controlling everything, but from a certainty: "I know who is with me."
Psalm 34 was written by David when he was humiliated, on the run, and lonely. He had failed to escape on his own, but in the cave, he looked up to God, relied on God, and feared God, and regained a sense of security. This psalm is a song of response he wrote to all those who are struggling in the valley.
1. Praise in adversity (v1–3)
“I will praise the Lord at all times” is what David said after his failure. He lost his face, status and freedom, but he did not lose his faith in God. A wise man does not wait for the wind to calm before worshiping but still opens his mouth to praise in the storm.
2. Those who look to God will not be put to shame (v4–7)
David no longer relied on pretending to be crazy to survive but turned to God. He said, "I sought the Lord, and He answered me." The real sense of security does not come from external circumstances, but from knowing that God has sent messengers to camp around. Those who look to God will have a glorious face.
1. Taste the goodness of the Lord (v8–10)
David is not preaching theology; he is inviting people to “taste” the goodness of God. True faith is not understanding, but experience. Those who fear God do not lack because they have placed their hearts in the hands of the faithful. Even young lions may go hungry, but the children of God do not lack any good thing.
2. The fear of God is different in words and deeds (v11–14)
The fear of God is not an emotion or verbal speech but is manifested in life. David advised his companions to control their tongues, turn away from evil and do good, and pursue peace. A person who fears God does not follow the crowd or respond according to the flesh, but lives out the testimony of discernment, self-control and peace.
3. God cares for the righteous and turns away from the wicked (v15–16)
God’s eyes never leave those who fear Him, and He hears their cries. But God will turn away from those who continue to do evil and despise holiness—they will eventually lose His favor. Don’t think that God’s patience is permission, the wise know how to be alert and return.
4. God will take care of the brokenhearted (v17–18)
David did not stand up again by being strong, but by experiencing God’s closeness in his brokenness. “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” This is a deep hope: we are not alone when we fall, and God is by our side when we shed tears.
5. God saves the righteous and condemns the wicked (v19–22)
David honestly said, "Many are the afflictions of the righteous," but he also confidently said, "The Lord delivers him from them all." God will not let His children suffer in vain. He will protect them to the end, not even a bone will be broken. On the contrary, the wicked will eventually perish, not because God does not love them, but because they are unwilling to take refuge in Him. Whoever takes refuge in Him will not be condemned.
A wise person is not one who does not suffer, but one who knows who is with him in his suffering. He looks up to God, relies on God, and fears God, and he is no longer ashamed or lonely.
