Psalm 39: Walk the Right Way, Not Wasted
GK611 Morning Devotion 08/07/2025 The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Asher Introduction: How many decades are there in life? Life is a short journey, but following God in the longest direction I. See that life is short, pursue eternity (Psalm 39:1–6) 1. The mouth determines the direction (V1–3) The opening of the mouth determines the path of life. David was not without emotion, nor was he weak and cowardly. His silence was a spiritual choice, a wisdom of restraining his tongue. He did not pretend not to care but learned not to respond emotionally and not to confront with his tongue before God. Because he knew: when a person opens his mouth, he will sometimes go down a wrong path. Our emotions often make us lose control, but David reminds us: "When sorrow starts, I choose to be silent; when the fire burns in my heart, I pray to God first." We all need to learn this spiritual response: restraining the mouth does not mean shutting up but leaving the first word to God. 2. You are sufficient (V4–6) We have nothing, but having God is sufficient. David was old. He did not show off his military exploits or count his wealth. He only asked one question: "Lord, how much time do I have?" The longer we live, the more we know how precious time is and how short life is. This world tells us to strive, to possess, and to be ahead. But David tells us that even if you have everything, it is still empty in the end. II. Fix your eyes on the Lord, rejoice in this life (Psalm 39:7–13) 1. Hope is only in You (V7) Life is short and fleeting, so what should we wait for? Waiting for promotion, waiting for money, waiting for opportunities? David said, "What am I waiting for? My hope is in You." It is not waiting for things to get better, not waiting for the environment to get better, but waiting for God's approval. Without Him, everything we have will be empty; with Him, even ordinary life can be joyful. 2. He knows what I need (V8–9) David did not ask God to save him from suffering but asked God to save him from "sins". He was not concerned about how others humiliated him, but whether he owed God. He said, "What I have suffered is from you, and I will not say anything more." Because when we know that God is the Lord, we don't need to rely on our mouths to get back anything. 3. Discipline reveals grace (V10–11) David knew that God’s punishment is to remove sin, not to destroy us. If we continue to be stubborn and refuse to turn back, even our smiles will be swallowed up. But as long as we are willing to turn to God, He will open a way for us. It is God who opens the way, and it is we who choose the way. 4. Get strength before leaving (V12–13) My strength lies in God. David’s final prayer was not for longevity or success, but “Lord, I am about to leave, but I want to return to you with strength and joy.” What a true and beautiful conclusion. We all have to “leave and never return”, but we can choose – to leave tired or to return joyfully. Conclusion: Life is short, so it is better to choose the right path as soon as possible. Only by choosing to live for God can we not waste every decade of our lives.
