Psalm 40: Trusting the Righteous Lord in the Pit of Despair
GK611 Morning Devotion 09/07/2025 The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Daniel I. Waiting Patiently – God Ultimately Delivers (Psalm 40:1–3) 1. God Personally Lifted Me Up (V1–2) David said he waited patiently for the Lord and experienced God personally lifting him out of the pit of destruction and the miry clay, setting his feet upon a rock. When we wait for a job, healing, or change... God may not respond immediately. In fact, He is preparing a solid rock for our steps and will personally lift us up. Waiting on God requires faith and patience. 2. Saved by God, Singing a New Song (V3) “Singing a new song” emphasizes genuine praise flowing from the heart and proclaimed through the mouth—it’s a public declaration of God’s grace. Salvation is not just a personal experience but a visible testimony to many. Salvation brings a new song! A new song brings testimony! Testimony leads more people to trust in God! II. Persist in trusting during Trouble times(Psalm 40:4–5) 1. Blessed Are Those Who Trust in God (V4) David contrasts those who trust in God with the proud and deceitful, emphasizing that those who rely on the Lord in times of trouble are truly blessed—not those who depend on schemes, connections, or their own ways. 2. God's Thoughts Cannot Be Explained V5) David marvels that God's plans and deeds are far beyond human understanding. Even when we don’t understand the pain, trials, or waiting we face, we can trust that God's thoughts are unmatched, and His will is best—because He knows the future we do not. III. Remaining Faithful in Attacks (Psalm 40:6–10) 1. God Desires Obedience, Not Ritual (V6–8) Many believed that sacrifices pleased God, but David understood that God desires obedience oit of a wiliing heart —not mere rituals. God’s law should not remain in our minds but enter our hearts, becoming our path and life. Only then can we truly delight to do God’s will. What God seeks is spiritual faithfulness. 2. Constantly Proclaiming God’s Righteousness (V9–10) David didn’t just revere God privately—he publicly proclaimed God's works. This is the act of faithful obedience. Are our mouths willing to speak of God's grace? At the table, in group chats, or at work—can we mention the Savior who rescued us? IV Crying for Grace in Distress (Psalm 40:11–17) 1. Surrounded by Trouble, Chased by Sin (V11–12) David didn’t deny his issues but confessed them openly. God doesn’t only save the innocent—He is eager to save those who acknowledge their sins. God can save those who "fell into the pit" and also forgive those who jumped in on their own. God never despises a person—He waits for them to confess and call on Him. 2. Pleading for God's Swift Mercy (V13–15) David repeatedly cried “Please!” showing his urgency and sincerity: Lord, come quickly to save me! This is living prayer! God’s people don’t fake strength—they cry out honestly. And God delights to hear. 3. A Declaration of Faith: God Still Cares (V16–17) This is David’s “declarative prayer” in hardship. Even without seeing a way out, he still believed that God cared. Hope doesn’t come because the problem is solved—but because God remembers you. You are not forgotten, but remembered! Conclusion: If you are in a “pit” today—don’t be afraid. Because the same God who personally saved David will also personally lift you up, set you on solid rock, and use you to help lift others up as well.
