Psalm 46: God Is Our Ever-Present Refuge
GK611 Morning Devotion 25/09/2025 The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew Introduction: Unpredictable Skies, Uncertain Days I. Enter the Refuge of Strength (Psalm 46:1–3) 1. Renewed Strength in the Refuge (v1) A refuge provides safety, and safety produces real strength. God is our stronghold whom we can run to at any time—not merely a last resort when all else fails. Don’t wait until you’re cornered to pray. Each day, intentionally “enter” His refuge through prayer and meditation, resting in His presence to receive fresh power. 2. Fearless Though the Earth Trembles (v2–3) The psalm pictures the world collapsing to express our deepest fears. We do not deny the existence of trouble, but we trust the One who transcends every crisis. In the storm we can declare, “I may feel afraid, but I have entered God’s refuge, so I choose not to fear.” II. Discover the River of Joy in God’s Presence (Psalm 46:4–7) 1. The River that Gladdens the City (v4) The sea of chaos and death rages outside; inside flows the river of life, symbolizing God’s gracious presence that refreshes and delights the soul. Drink deeply of this river—sing praise, count your blessings, ponder His love—until joy replaces anxiety. 2. Security in God’s Presence (vv. 5–7) God’s proximity is more dependable than any fortress. Nations roar, yet at His voice the earth melts. True safety is not in thick walls but in this reality: “The Lord of hosts is with us.” Fear grows when we magnify problems; peace comes when we recognize that God is with us. III. Be Still and Know That He Is God (Psalm 46:8–11) 1. Come and See His Mighty Works (v8–9) God invites us to witness His deeds—ending wars and bringing peace—so that anxious bystanders become restful witnesses. Take time in prayer and Scripture to recall God’s victories in history, in others’ lives, and in your own. Remembering His past triumphs strengthens faith today. 2. Rest to Truly Know Him (v10–11) “Be still” means to let go, to cease striving. This is not laziness but trusting surrender. When we stop grasping and let God act, we encounter His power, know that He alone is God, and find deep peace as fear loses its grip. Conclusion: God invites us to dwell in His love, discover His grace, and behold His triumph. Fear loses its power because we already abide in the refuge that is “ever-present everywhere.”
