Psalm 52: Taking Pride in Evil - God Will Surely DestroyGK611 Morning Devotion 29/01/2026 The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew I. The Wicked Take Pride in Doing Evil (Psalm 52:1–3) 1. Boasting in Evil (V1) When David was fleeing, he asked the priest Ahimelech for food, and Doeg was there watching. Later, when Saul was pursuing David, Doeg twisted the facts and falsely accused Ahimelech of helping a traitor in order to gain favor. As a result, eighty-five priests were killed. Doeg boasted in his evil deeds and considered himself “mighty.” Yet David proclaimed that God’s steadfast love endures forever. The wicked may enjoy momentary success, but the only truly eternal security is God’s unfailing love. Even today, some people take pride in evil—climbing upward through lies, deception, and harming others. We should neither envy them nor follow the same path. Instead, we must cling tightly to God’s steadfast love, for that alone is our true support and strength. 2. Loving Evil More Than Good (V2–3) David uses the word “love” three times to expose the heart of Doeg, who took pride in evil. Doeg’s actions were not a momentary lapse; his heart had already made its choice: loving evil more than good, loving lies rather than truth, and loving all words that destroy. In short, he loved benefiting himself at the expense of others. We too must remain alert. Have we ever spoken hurtful words, shared unverified information, or criticized others behind their backs? Let us learn to guard our tongues, choose words that build up, and refuse to walk the path of harming others for our own gain. II. God Will Completely Uproot the Wicked (Psalm 52:4-5) God’s judgment on those who take pride in evil is thorough and everlasting. Doeg thought that relying on Saul would secure his future, but God declared that He would uproot him completely, leaving no trace behind. Therefore, when the wicked seem to prosper, we should not lose heart or take revenge ourselves. We are to wait for the Lord, for His judgment is both most complete and most just. At the same time, God warns us not to toy with sin—evil will never be tolerated indefinitely. III. The Righteous Witness the End of the Wicked (Psalm 52:6–7) The righteous first respond with fear, because they see God’s judgment and are reminded to guard themselves from following the path of the wicked. Then they look upon the downfall of the wicked. This is not gloating over misfortune, but spiritual clarity—recognizing that true wisdom is found in trusting God. We should often ask ourselves: What am I relying on—money, connections, or God? When we see the wicked fall, we should not become proud, but even more vigilant, firmly choosing to rely on God and practicing daily trust in Him. IV. The Trust and Praise of the Righteous (Psalm 52:8–9) 1. Trusting Forever in God’s Steadfast Love (V8) The olive tree has deep roots and strong vitality, capable of living for hundreds of years. David described himself as a flourishing green olive tree in the house of God—planted and cared for by God Himself. Even while fleeing, he chose to rely on God’s steadfast love, because that love is an unfailing and everlasting source. Today, we are called to be like David, rooting ourselves in God’s presence through daily Scripture reading and prayer. No matter how difficult our circumstances may be, we can remain evergreen—steady, strong, and fruitful. 2. Publicly Praising God Forever (V9) The victory of the righteous is to be publicly expressed through thanksgiving and testimony within the community. Our testimonies matter—not merely saying, “God is good,” but clearly declaring how God has worked. Specific stories are like the aroma of freshly baked bread, drawing people to know the Baker behind it. Conclusion: Today, we must make a choice: will we take pride in evil, or will we take pride in God? May we all be like David—flourishing and bearing fruit in the house of God, forever giving thanks and bearing witness to His name. For those who take pride in evil, God will surely destroy; but those who rely on Him are the true warriors.
