Psalm 55: Just Come Before You
GK611 Morning Devotion 27.03.2026 Speaker: Ps Asher Chang Introduction: What truly matters most? I. Returning to the Refuge in the Midst of Great Trouble (Psalm 55:1–8) Bringing Oneself Back Before God (v1–3) Under immense pressure, David cried out to God, expressing his urgency and helplessness through the words “take notice, listen, and answer”. Internally, he was filled with anguish and restlessness; externally, he was oppressed by the voices of his enemies and the weight of his burdens. Faced with betrayal, attack and broken relationships, his first response was not to solve the problems, but to bring himself back before God. This reminds us that under pressure, we are quick to seek solutions or turn to others, yet we often overlook the most crucial step: turning back to God. 2. Pouring Out One’s Sorrows to God (v4–7) David did not hide his state of mind; he said his heart was in anguish, fear overwhelmed him, and he even imagined flying away like a dove. He honestly expressed his desire to flee. This shows us that prayer is not about appearing strong, but about bringing our true selves before God. Often, it is not that we lack faith, but that we dare not be authentic; yet it is precisely when we are most confused, weary, and desperate to run away that we most need to come before God. 3. Returning to the Refuge of Peace (v8) David says he will ‘hasten to the refuge’; the key is not the act of fleeing, but where he flees to. The true refuge is not the wilderness, but God’s presence. We too react swiftly under pressure, but often we run in the wrong direction. True peace does not come from the disappearance of problems, but from our willingness, in the midst of the storm, to bring ourselves back before God at the very first moment. II. Letting God Take Control in Our Prayer (Psalm 55:9–15) As David continued to pray, his perspective began to shift. He no longer saw merely that ‘I have been hurt’, but recognised this as a spiritual battle. He prayed that God would confuse the enemy‘s tongues, just as at the Tower of Babel, so that their plans cannot succeed. He saw the city filled with wickedness; this was not merely a personal issue, but an act of resistance against God’s kingdom. Though prayer did not immediately change his situation, it elevated his perspective. This reminds us not to remain stuck in our emotions or human perspective, but to let God take control, allowing Him to reveal deeper spiritual realities to us. III. Relying on God in Adversity (Psalm 55:9–16, 23) 1. Do not cease to call upon God 2. Cast your burdens upon God 3. Decide firmly to rely on God David said, ‘As for me, I will call upon God.’ The circumstances had not changed, yet he made a decision. He continually came before God in prayer, casting his burdens upon Him, and chose to rely on God even before receiving an answer. This reveals a process: from never ceasing to pray, to learning to entrust, and finally to defining our reliance. True peace does not come from the resolution of problems, but from the knowledge that, even in the midst of the storm, God is sustaining us. Therefore, the key is not whether circumstances have changed, but whether we truly learnt to rely on God in adversity. Conclusion: Adversity often causes people to turn away from God and seek refuge in people or methods, but David, even at his lowest ebb, repeatedly brings himself back before God, relying not on people but drawing strength solely from God’s promises. The key is not the magnitude of the problem, but where we choose to place ourselves. When we are willing to return to God, not following our emotions, but determined to rely on Him, a way will be made.
