人能把我怎么样呢?”Psalm 56: Trusting in God, Without FearGK611 Morning Devotion 01.04.2026 Speaker: Ps Stella Ling Introduction: Difficulties are unavoidable in life, and everyone experiences fear. When David was captured in Gath and had nowhere to turn, he declared three times, “I trust in God; I will not be afraid.” This points all who are in fear to a path of light. 1. Turn to the True God when in fear(vv.1–4) i. Face inner fear with honesty (vv.1–2) David did not pretend to be strong. He spoke directly to God: “Be merciful to me, O God, for men hotly pursue me.” He used the word “swallow” to describe the fierceness of his enemies, like wild beasts devouring a person. They attacked and oppressed him all day long. Instead of putting on a brave front, David poured out his heart. True faith is not the absence of fear, but coming before God even when afraid and telling Him everything honestly. God is merciful and willing to hear our sincere prayers. ii. Choose to trust in God’s word (vv.3–4) After expressing his feelings, David made an important decision: “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.” He did not dwell on how difficult his situation was but chose to rely on God and praise His word. He knew that God’s word is sure, and compared to the eternal God, man can do nothing ultimately. When we are afraid, it is the very moment to turn back to God. When we shift our eyes from the storm to the Lord, our faith finds its foundation. 2. Be Assured of God’s Grace During Troubles (vv.5–9) i. The enemy’s attacks remain (vv.5–7) David clearly described the tactics of his enemies: twisting his words, plotting harm, and hiding to ambush him. Trusting God does not mean the circumstances immediately improve— the enemies may still be present and attacks may still be fierce. Yet David did not collapse. He entrusted judgment to God and asked Him to uphold justice. This reminds us that faith means holding on to God in reality and leaving vengeance in His hands. ii.. God cares and remembers (vv.8–9) In hardship, David saw a deeper truth: God had never left him. “You number my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle.” Every displacement and every tear is treasured and remembered by God. He believed that all his prayers were recorded in God’s book. Therefore, he could say, “When I cry out, my enemies will turn back,” because he knew that “God is for me.” Believing that God remembers and helps us in our difficulties is the key to victorious faith. 3. Declare Fearlessness in Faith (vv.10–11) David declared for the third time: “In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” This was not only inward belief but also a spoken confession. He again emphasized praising God’s word, for His word is His promise. When faith is spoken, the threats of the enemy lose their power. Declaration itself is a step toward victory, strengthening our faith. 4. Live in the Light following Gratitude (vv.12–13) David said, “I will present my thank offerings to You.” He remembered the vows he made in trouble and responded to God’s deliverance with gratitude. God delivered him from death and kept him from falling so that he might walk before Him in the light of life. True faith produces a life of thanksgiving, and such a life is expressed through actions in the light. One who has experienced God’s salvation will give thanks and live a life worthy of His grace. Conclusion: Psalm 56 shows us a path of faith from fear to victory: turn to God in fear, trust in His grace in difficulties, declare fearlessness in faith, and live out the light through gratitude. We all have our own “Gath,” but David’s experience teaches us that fear is not the end—turning back to God is the way out. May we, like David, declare: “I trust in God; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
