Song of Songs 2
From Insecurity to Commitment: A Journey into God’s Love

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Asher
At the beginning of Song of Solomon Chapter 2, we see a highly symbolic dialogue. The woman says, “I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.” (v.1) On the surface, it seems like self-praise, but in reality, it's a form of self-deprecation—she compares herself to a common wildflower found on the Sharon plain or in the valleys. This reflects how she views her identity and value: ordinary, sun-darkened, and overlooked.
However, the beloved immediately responds,“Like a lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.” (v.2) This is a powerful reversal! In the Lord’s eyes, she is not “ordinary,” but a lily blooming among thorns—special, beautiful, and set apart.
1. Resting in His Love, Not Walking by Feelings (v.4–6)
The Lord doesn’t love us because of anything remarkable in us, but because He chooses to embrace us with perfect love, so that we can rest securely in Him. As the woman says,“He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.” (v.4) This isn’t just emotional excitement, but the entrance into a deep relationship. Yet, we must also examine ourselves: at times we pursue the Lord for our own benefits (like getting apples or raisins), but what the Lord truly longs for is that we also become His satisfaction.
2. Waiting for Mature Love, Not Dancing with Impulse (v.7)
Those intoxicated by the Lord’s love must learn what true love is—not impulsive, but restrained; not sensual, but committed. The woman solemnly vows, “Do not stir up nor awaken love until it pleases.” (v.7) Love on the faith journey is not just about initial feelings, but ongoing choice and commitment—a willingness to move according to God’s timing, not rushing ahead or forcing it.
1. Waiting Quietly for Love, Not Defined by the World (v.8–15)
This passage paints the woman’s longing for her beloved—she hears him “Leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills” (v.8), yet they haven’t met. We often experience the same spiritually: the Lord seems “hidden” or silent in our weakness. But in truth, He is always waiting behind the lattice for our response.
2. Identity and Hope Belonging to God (v.16–17)
“My beloved is mine, and I am his.” (v.16) This tender confession marks her affirmation of the relationship. Yet, there’s still a tone of “I possess Him,” rather than “I live for Him.” This reflects a transition from “enjoying the Lord” to “committing to the Lord.”
God does not want just a fleeting passion from you, nor does He want you to follow Him with conditions. He desires a you who sees your identity clearly through His eyes—a you who is captivated by His love, yet still chooses commitment; a you who guards holiness and stays alert in the world, not swayed by worldly temptations.
