Psalm 22

23/09/2023

2 Samuel Chapter 12 King David who was willing to repent after making a mistake
GK611 Morning Devotion
22/9/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Bro Bezalel Tan

Introduction: If one can change after making a mistake, there is nothing better than this.

1. God reminded David through parables (12:1-6)

The prophet used parables to guide David to respond objectively to the event and thereby convict himself.

It is not that people living in the flesh don’t know sin or don’t understand the truth, but they are “strict with others and lenient with themselves” and always like to get rid of the accusations of their own conscience by condemning others. Therefore, this sentence is also what God says to us: When we righteously condemn others, we should first reflect on ourselves to see if we are “that man”!

2. David was severely rebuked by God (12:7-14)

(1) You are the man (V7a)

The risk of admonishing the king is very high. It is easy to “fail to defeat the tiger yet be injured by the tiger”. But Nathan did not beat around the bush, but directly declared the great accusation: ” You are the man”! This was not only because of Nathan’s loyalty to God but also because he knew David’s fear of God.

If a person’s status, reputation, or temper reaches such a level that no one dares to criticise him, then he may either be left alone by God or be judged by God Himself.

(2) Counting God’s Grace (V7b-9)

“Anointed you, saved you, gave you, delivered into your arms, granted you”. These five verbs count the grace God bestowed upon David, and at the same time condemn David for despising grace and being unwilling to be content.

God’s grace is always sufficient for us, but our sins are often the same as David’s. It is not because we lack anything, but because we despise grace, so we are carnal and indulge in the lusts of the flesh, not being vigilant and committing great sins.

3. Integrated Life (V10-14)

After being reminded by the prophet, David immediately admitted his fault. David’s humility and willingness to confess his sins were his saving grace, and God forgave his sins.

We must always humble ourselves in life. When our cell leaders, pastors, or authorities point out the flaws and shortcomings in our lives, we must humbly accept them and repent promptly. At the same time, we also ask God to point out the dark side of our lives so that our lives can be integrated by God. The inside is consistent with the outside. Just like the message delivered by the pastor on Sunday, men go home, women to align with truth, live out Christ, and glorify Christ.

3. Understand God’s will and restart (12:15-31)

(1) Sin must be eliminated (V15-25)

David prayed fervently for the child. Although the prophet Nathan clearly stated that the child would die, he still did not stop calling out to God.

Because of David’s faith, God blessed. The marriage was defiled, but after God’s correction a son was born who was God’s favorite.

(2) Restart after failure (V26-31)

Here we see that God will punish those who sin, but will not give up on those who willingly repent. When we are able to confess our transgressions and repent in time, God accepts us again and uses us as vessels of honour and glory.

Conclusion:

Every New Testament believer has experienced the grace of David. When we, like David, live in sin and cannot escape bondage, God takes the initiative to find, enlighten, and guide us to confess our sins, repent, and return to God. God then replaces the old life with the new life of Christ and loves us as if we had never sinned.

2 Samuel 11 Be alert at all times to avoid falling into temptation
GK611 Morning Devotion
21/9/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

David fell into temptation because he was so comfortable that he was not alert.

1. Falling into temptation because of idleness (v1-5)

David, being the king of a nation, did not go to the front line himself when his army was at the war, but slept at home and did not get up until the sun was about to go down. Afterward, he allowed himself to fall into temptation and sinned against God by committing adultery with a married woman.

2. Falling into greater sin (v6-25)

Instead of repenting in time, David sought to cover up his sin.

(1) Covering up the sin (v6-13)

David recalled Uriah, who was still in the battlefield, hoping that Uriah could cover up his sin by sleeping with his wife, and also by secretly pushing Bathsheba’s baby onto Uriah. However, Uriah, being a man of integrity, did not want to be comfortable and enjoy himself and did not return home. Therefore, David’s plan did not succeed.

(2) Killing to silence (v14-25)

David commanded Joab to have Uriah killed in battle. David’s plan, too, succeeded. Uriah died.

We see a man who was called after God’s own heart, who had grown in life in the past when he was being pursued, who had learned to obey God and rely on Him, and yet, still fell into the weaknesses of the flesh. He not only sinned, but also made mistakes again and again. Therefore, we need to be very alert.

Conclusion (v26-27)

God saw all the things that David did, and it displeased God greatly. We need to be very careful not to think that sin can be hidden and that the consequences will catch up with us. Therefore, we need to be on guard at all times. However, when we sin, we need to know how to turn back quickly, or it will be too late when God judges us!

2 Samuel 10 Wise Decisions
GK611 Morning Devotion
20/9/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Co-worker Asher Chang

Introduction: A Monkey’s Tale.

1. Beware of rumours

(1) Discern calmly (V1-3)

David was supposed to treat Hanun, king of Ammon, well because he wanted to fulfil his promise to their father. But Hanun, king of Ammon, heard the petty incitement of the leaders and ended up starting the war because of rumours.

In the workplace, we also need to be especially careful to know how to discern provocative words.

(2) Handle wisely (V4-5)

When Hanun heard the provocations of the leaders, he humiliated David’s messengers, shaved half of their beards and cut off the lower part of their clothes, and sent them back. This was actually a declaration of war action because humiliating David’s messengers was equivalent to humiliating David!

In the face of provocation and incitement, we can quiet ourselves before we make a decision that could lead to disaster.

2. Beware of impulsiveness

(1) Do not make impulsive decisions (V6-14)

Hanun was preparing a large mercenary army to wage a full-scale war to destroy Israel. When David heard about this, he sent Joab out with a valiant army without saying a word. The two armies were actually evenly matched because the tactics Joab told his brother Abishai were actually tactics that didn’t work, but purely encouragement to each other.

God preserved Israel and turned the situation around. Either David or Hanun had picked such a huge fight out of impulse. In the midst of human weakness, we see God’s quiet grace, and it was all grace that enabled the Israelites to return to Jerusalem.

(2) To suffer a double loss (V15-19)

The Ammonites did not learn a lesson from their defeat. They made their own judgment based on the situation alone, and called for another attack on Israel, which resulted in a defeat and heavy losses.

Conclusion: know that He is God

Don’t let self-righteousness lead to great trouble; handle it with care. Hanun was incited and ended up in a great lost; the Ammonites were disobedient and ended up losing another battle; David didn’t seek God in all his actions and ended up coming close to a great disaster.

Let us not make decisions in times of great emotion, but be quiet in all things and seek God first.

2 Samuel 9 A king who keeps his promises and shows lovingkindness
GK611 Morning Devotion
19/9/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Daniel Kew

Introduction: When people are alive, relationships stay, but when people die, relationships will no longer exist!

David did the opposite! Both Jonathan and Saul died, but David still kept his promises. David is truly a king who keeps his promises and shows lovingkindness!

1. Actively look for and keep promises (V1-4)

David asked twice, ‘Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul?’ Take the initiative to find the descendants of Saul’s family, keep and fulfil his promises, and treat the remaining people of Saul’s family kindly according to God’s lovingkindness.

God’s love forgives people’s transgressions and gives them another chance. God’s love is His willingness to sacrifice Himself for the salvation of our lives! As children of God, we must also be honest and keep our promises! And follow the way Jesus treated others and be kind to those around us!

2. Receive people in person with lovingkindness (V5-8)

(1) Call by his real name (V6)

David reaffirms his identity by calling Mephibosheth by his real name (unlike Ziba who calls him lame), comforting him not to be afraid.

(2) Promise to treat one another with lovingkindness (V7)

This was David’s purpose in seeking Mephibosheth: to show him lovingkindness.

(3) Return all the lands (V7)

David promised Mephibosheth that he would be kind to him. In order to fulfil the promise of kindness, all the lands belonging to his grandfather Saul were returned to him.

(4) Always eat with the king(V7)

David treated Mephibosheth kindly so that he could always be with the king and enjoy a close relationship with the king.

We are spiritually disabled, blind, deaf, and lame. But God, who is faithful and promise-keeping, has chosen us, redeemed us with mercy, and allowed us to stand up again!

3. Fulfil promises by showing lovingkindness (V9-13)

Here, we see that David fulfilled God’s kindness in treating Mephibosheth. He allowed him to inherit the land of Saul’s family and gave him many servants to work for him. He could also often eat at the table with David to enjoy the dignity of a prince. Just as God had raised David from the humblest of circumstances to the dignity of a king in the past, so David now treated Mephibosheth kindly, raising him from the humbleness of a dead dog to the dignity of a prince.

We should imitate David: just as God is gracious to us, we should also be gracious to others, so that he may be exalted to enjoy the honour of a prince.

Conclusion: A king who keeps promises and shows lovingkindness

David was victorious and exalted because God kept his promises and showed lovingkindness! While David kept his promises and showed lovingkindness, Mephibosheth’s status was promoted!

Our lives are like Mephibosheth, because we met a promise-keeping and merciful king, all the grace we receive is free! But we should not stop here. We should, like David, receive it ourselves, and we should also love and treat others “according to the lovingkindness of God”!

Introduction: A key point for successful people is to establish good connections!

1. Only by relying on God can we achieve complete victory (8:1-4)

(1) Break down the enemy’s stronghold (V1)

The Philistines have always been Israel’s number one enemy; among all the enemies, they are the most difficult to deal with and the ones who fight Israel most often. But in order to show that it was Him who took action, God directly took the ‘the bridle of the Mother City’, the most critical capital city. Seizing the power in the capital means taking control of everything.

Isn’t that what victory in life is all about? Only by finding the core of the problem, or the root cause of the condition, can we prescribe the right medicine, turn it around completely, and solve the problem.

(2) Fulfill prophecies and promises (V2)

We know that David’s ancestor Ruth was a Moabite, so he was related to the Moabites. So, when he was fleeing from Saul, he sent his parents to the king of Moab for refuge (1 Sam. 22:4). However, the Moabites may not have known this background. According to Jewish traditional records, David’s parents were killed by the Moabites, which led David to fight back against Moab. And this also fulfilled the prophecy of Moses: (Numbers 24:17) ‘…a Star shall come out of Jacob; a Scepter shall rise out of Israel, and batter the brow of Moab, and destroy all the sons of tumult. ’

You can make all the Moabites lie down on the ground. One rope should mean that those of medium height should be kept, and two ropes should mean that those who are tall and muscular should be killed. It’s strange, why are they so powerless to resist? This isn’t it just as the above scriptures say that God has already decided to let this happen, and the enemy has no power to resist.

With God’s will, things can happen miraculously. Therefore, isn’t seeking God’s will in all that we do more important than any effort?

(3) Act according to God’s destiny (V3-4)

David feared God, so God allowed him to be victorious in all battles to fully obtain the promised land. Since David had captured 1,700 horsemen at that time, it means that Israel will get 1,700 horses. Isn’t that great? Why does he have to cut off the horse’s tendons? Even if it doesn’t die, it will be disabled and can no longer run. What is the reason for this? Deuteronomy 17:16 ‘But the king shall not multiply horses for himself….’ God knows that once they have chariots and horses, their victory will be imagined as their weapons or troops are stronger, and they forget that it is God!

As Psalm 20:7 ‘Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.’ God is happy to work when people are at their weakest because this will allow people to give all glory to God.

2. Invincible expansion of reputation (8:5-18)

(1) God takes action to give man victory (V5-12)

God was willing to help David in what he wanted to do. Even if the two countries’ coalition forces came to attack David’s camp, the result was a disastrous defeat to David, because God is with His people. Not only did he greatly defeat the enemy, but he also captured the copper for future temple construction. As long as we have God’s heart, we will be blessed with victory wherever we go. Gold shields and much bronze were brought to Jerusalem, and after they were consecrated, they became materials for building the temple in the future.

At that time, David’s heart was fighting for the temple of God, or in today’s situation, when we are thinking about the church of Christ, God was of course willing to help us.

(2) Defeat powerful enemies and gain a great name (V13-15)

Aram, or Edom, is at the southernmost end of the Promised Land. He previously attacked the north, and now it attacked the south. David gained a great name because of this, as mentioned in 7:9 above. However, David might have fallen into pride and thought he was very powerful, so he wrote Psalm 60 to express his inner thoughts. (Psalm 60:9 Who will bring me to the strong city? Who will lead me to Edom? 10 Is it not You, O God, who cast us off? And You, O God, who did not go out with our armies? 11 Give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless. 12 Through God we will do valiantly, for it is He who shall tread down our enemies.)

David knew that God was helping him, so he did justice to all the people. We should do things according to God’s attributes and the standards of the Tree of Life. This is a key factor in his continued grace!

(3) Establish a structure to do big things (V16-18)

David does not rely solely on his own personal bravery to do things, but shares the workload, builds a team, and puts each one in his place to give full play to his strengths. Only with structure and organisation can we accomplish great things in the long run. Isn’t that what we do?

Conclusion: Keep learning to rely on God

There are many examples of Israel’s victory through God. This has been the case since ancient times and is still the case today. We now have the God of Israel as our Heavenly Father, how precious that is! How do we experience victory? Learn to rely on God in all things big and small!

2 Samuel 7 Stay close to God’s heart and think of the things that concern God
GK611 Morning Devotion
14/9/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan

Introduction: Thoughtful Child

There is a young single mother who takes care of her mother-in-law and her children. It’s tough, but she has no complaints. One day, the mom casually mentioned to her daughter that the company hadn’t paid her yet, so she had to spend wisely. Little did she know that when she returned home that night, dragging her tired body, her daughter had taken all the money out of her piggy bank and shoved it into her hand, saying, “Mom, this is all for you, don’t worry.”

Looking at such a sweet, understanding child, the mother’s heart warm, moved to tears. The fatigue of the day suddenly disappeared, and she held the child tightly in her arms, eager to give the child all that she had and all that was best for her.

1. When you are mindful of the things of God (v1-7)

(1) Stay close to God’s heart and think about building a temple for God (v1-2)

While David was sitting in his palace with the king’s palace completed, the country secure and at ease, and sitting in his own palace, he thought of ark of God but it was still in the tabernacle, and therefore wanted to build a temple for God to dwell in.

People generally think of God in the midst of hardship and danger, but when they come to peace, they are estranged from God. It is not difficult to notice this simply from the fact that during the pandemic and now, God’s children are not interested in coming to worship and meetings. When the pandemic opened up, many were thinking about their own needs, their own families. But David’s heart was with God, thinking about God’s things. Brothers and sisters, are we also attentive to God’s heart?

(2) Though unsupportive but deeply moved (v3-7)

Nathan felt that David’s idea was a good one, and that God was with David. So he said, Do whatever you want. But that night, God said to Nathan that He did not want David to build a temple for Him.

What man thinks is good is not necessarily what God wants. The only way to fulfill what God wants is to do it according to God’s will, and the result will satisfy God’s heart.

Although God did not support David’s idea of building a temple for Him, He was deeply moved by David’s thoughtfulness. David just had the idea of building a temple for God and spoke the word, and God was responsive. v5-16, God then used 12 words for Nathan to communicate the series of blessings He wanted to give to David and his descendants.

When we are mindful of God’s business and attentive to His heart, God not only remembers, but God is eager to give us all the benefits.

2. God will think of matters that concern you (v8-17)

David was deeply pleased with God because he had God’s things in mind. v8-17, God unilaterally took the initiative to make an eternal ‘Covenant with David’ . In this ‘Covenant with David’ God gave a minimum of 10+ promises to David and his descendants. These include:

1. to be chosen to be king, 2. to have the presence of God, 3. to cut off all enemies, 4. to have a great name, 5. to look after his people, 6. to live in peace and prosperity, 7. to cultivate and enhance life, 8. to be free from enemies, 9. to build up a family, 10. to have an inheritance, 11. to be in a father-and-son relationship with God, 12. to be disciplined with grace, and 13. to establish a firm family and a kingdom for all eternity.

What is special about the Covenant with David is that it is an eternal covenant that God took the initiative to make with David. And it is a covenant that has absolutely no conditions attached to it, and God is personally responsible for it till the end. And this Covenant with David is fully fulfilled through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and is passed on to everyone who accepts Christ as Lord, which is you and me.

3. The Key to the Fulfillment of God’s Promises (v18-27)

(1) Obedience and acknowledging only God (v18-23)

David was well aware of his own insignificance. From being a humble, forgotten shepherd boy, to sitting on the throne today, enjoying peace and prosperity, David knew that it was all due to God’s grace. God’s immense favour and goodness not only made David unable to express his gratitude to God in words, but it also made David realised that God was the only One for him (v22 For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You).

We have been exploring the Tree of Life and the Heartified Ten Commandments these past few months. Pastor’s sharing on Sunday led to reclaiming the first commandment of the Ten Commandments from the perspective of love. God is the one and only, loving me, my Creator, my Heavenly Father. The Father established the Commandments to protect us and not to let us be harmed in any way. Let’s get serious about responding to God again and let Him truly be the only One for us, there is no God but You.

(2) Blessing the descendants according to God’s promise (v25-29)

God promised David to build him a family and bless his descendants. David then interceded and blessed his descendants using what God had said as his prayer.

Quite often our prayers are not accomplished because we pray according to what we want. But if we pray according to God’s promises, they will be accomplished. Because God is faithful, He will not contradict with what He has said.

Conclusion: Thinking about the things that concern God

In the face of such a great blessing from God, David was still eager to repay God’s grace in action. So he did not stop at God saying that he could not build the temple. David actively prepared money and materials and everything needed for his son to build the temple. So when Solomon came to the throne, he was blessed to build on the foundation his father had already laid.

Whether we are cell group leaders, workplace leaders, or pastors, co-workers, let us keep the things of God’s house in mind. Our faith, our love for God, and God’s commission to the church should not stop at this generation. Just as David prepared for Solomon, let us also prepare for the kingdom of God, so that the next generation can step on our shoulders and continue to build upwards. Pray that God will raise up more Davidic hearted Josephs to enter into the many doors that God will open for us in the year 5784.
