Book of 2 Samuel 6

2 Samuel 6 It’s Not Awkward to Love God
GK611 Morning Devotion
13/9/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Co- worker Asher Chang

Introduction: As long as you are not embarrassed, it is others who are embarrassed.

I. Loving God with the Heart of God

(1) David’s Love for God’s Heart (V1-2)

David loved God’s presence so much that when he ascended to the throne as king and his kingdom was secure and stable, the first thing he wanted to do was to transport to Jerusalem. Through his psalms, we understand that David was looking for a resting place for God, so he also chose 30,000 men to lead all the tribes to return to God with one heart and bring the ark of God to Jerusalem.

(2) To love God needs to know the heart of God (V3-5)

David’s love for God was known to all, and he used so many people to transport the ark of God in a new cart. But love for God is not according to one’s own standards, but according to God’s will. According to the law, the ark of God had to be carried by the sons of Kohath the Levite. David may not have known this, but Uzzah and Ahio, who were Levites, should have known this, but did not bring it up.

2. Integrating Life to Love God

(1) Uzzah treated God recklessly – struck by God (V6-8)

Brother Uzzah grew up looking at the ark of God and was familiar with it. But he touched the ark of God breaking the law of the day. In the Scriptures, the word “wrong” actually means “contempt” or “rashness”, so it is clear that Uzzah did not regard God’s holiness with a very prudent attitude. Therefore, he was struck down by God.

(2) Obed-Edom’s wholehearted welcome God (V9-11)

Everyone was afraid of God because of what happened to Uzzah, even David. Obed-Edom knew it all, but he still welcomed the ark of God to his house. Because of his love for God’s presence, the LORD blessed Obed-Edom and his whole family.

3. Love God with all your heart without embarrassment

(1) Sincere love for God not giving up (V12-15)

David saw God’s blessing in Obed-Edom, and he accepted the lesson of his failure to welcome the ark of God once again. Perhaps he had reflected and understood God’s law better in the meantime, and this time he did God’s will completely.

(2) Praise without Embarrassment (V16-23)

David humbled himself completely with all his heart, stripped off his kingly garments, and danced to meet God in his ephod, totally unconcerned about what others might think. Michal, who did not understand God, thought this was undignified, so he sarcastically criticised David, and the result was that he could not have children.

Conclusion: Lay down your reputation and love God with all your heart.

We often change or limit the way we worship God because of our own image, interests, convenience, ego, and so on. God looks at our hearts, not our ways. Let us be able to put ourselves aside and passionately worship God as David did, praising Him from the heart and glorifying Him with joy!

2 Samuel 5 The Key to David’s Success as King
GK611 Morning Devotion
12/9/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Daniel Kew

Introduction:

Today’s scripture is about the day when all the Israelites came to make David king. Let’s learn together: The key to David’s success as king.

1. Walk according to God’s will, then there is a turning point (V1-5)

David endured many hardships and trials, finally becoming king of all Israel. However, David never sought the throne for himself. All he did was trust God and act according to God’s will. Although there were many twists and turns in the process, everything that happened helped him win the kingdom and prompted the entire 12 tribes of Israel to be happy to support him as king, fulfilling God’s promise to him!

A person who wholeheartedly seeks and trusts God is also the person who least needs to worry! Because there will be a turning point when there is God!

2. Becoming stronger and stronger with God’s presence (V6-25)

(1) Lay down yourself and stick close to God’s will (V6-11)

David’s first military action after unifying the country was to seize the protection of Mount Zion from the Jebusites and build the capital in Jerusalem. In addition to the convenient terrain for defence, Jerusalem was right between the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. The location was moderate, indicating fairness and no selfishness. Therefore, David did this to be close to God’s will and to unite and protect the people, not to achieve merit for himself.

Because David obeyed God, he was useful to God, and God was with him to strengthen and prosper his kingdom! May we become the David today!

(2) In everything, ask God who does new things (V17-25)

The first time: head-on against the Philistines (V17-21)
In fact, David had fought and won many battles with the Philistines as early as the time of King Saul. However, he did not rely on his rich battle experience, but he still went before God to humbly ask God. As a result, God told him that he could fight and would win, so he led his army with faith and went up to fight. As a result, he defeated the Philistines!

If we did get a clear answer from God: You can! We have nothing to worry about!

The second time: ambush the Philistines from behind (V22-25)
The Philistines returned soon after. David once again faced a newly defeated enemy, and he asked God again.

Last time it was a head-on battle, but this time God said to ambush from behind! It turns out that God sent angels from heaven to cooperate with David’s army to attack the Philistine army from inside and outside! David listened and did it, and the result was also a great victory!

God is a God who never changes, but God is also a God who does new things! Therefore, we must be renewed by God every day, lest we fall into service without fresh anointing!

Conclusion:

We always hope to have God’s presence when we encounter difficulties. The key is to go back to the Bible, ask God thoroughly, and act according to God’s will, and then you will have God’s presence! The path with God’s presence is also the path full of God’s blessings and care!

Psalm 18

11/09/2023

Book of 2 Samuel 4

2 Samuel 4 Those who trust in God will be favored
GK611 Morning Devotion
8/9/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Bezalel Tan

Introduction: Examinations at the Gates of Heaven –

1. Relying on man rather than God, all hands will be limp (V1)

Ishbosheth was so overwhelmed by the death of the man who had made him king that all Israel was terrified. Fear can paralyze us, but faith and dependence on God overcomes fear. As long as we trust God, we can boldly overcome the difficulties around us.

2. Keep relying on people will lead to the paths of death (V2-3, 5-8)

(1) Not being alert in times of danger (V5-6)

The nation was in the midst of a time of crisis, but Isbosheth was not alert and took a nap, which led to his death. Christians need to be alert at all times, for the Bible says that the day is near when the enemy, the devil, like a roaring lion, will go on his way, seeking whom he may devour.

(2) Not knowing how to use people well (V2-3,7-8)

Although Ishbosheth’s ministers had no ambition to usurp the throne, they killed the king and sought his reward. As a leader, it is crucial to use people, not to utilise subordinates, but to have true relationships!

3. Keep relying God, favoured by God (V4, 9-12)

(1) Trusting God for food and clothing (V4)

Mephibosheth’s life was really forked according to man. At the beginning of his life, he had nothing to compare with Ishbosheth. The difference between the two was like an abyss. The contrast between Isposheth and Mephibosheth shows us the way to choose, which is to rely on God alone.

(2) Trusting God to act justly (V9-12)

David’s recounting of the wrongdoings of the Amalekite youths to Rechab and Baanah, and his declaration of their selfish, evil motives, shows that the penalty now to be carried out transcends personalities and feelings, and is a fact of righteous judgment on God’s behalf.

A man after God’s own heart cannot dwell on “a straight foot is not afraid of a crooked shoe. Not only must his body be upright, but his shadow must not be crooked, and he must live completely in the light! Not only must he hold on to the truth himself, but he must not allow others to misunderstand and fall because of him. This is the testimony of “shining light. Never forget that the throne of God rests on the foundation of righteousness.

Conclusion: Prayer of Grace

I am a Christian and I never doubt. All things shall become possible.I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. God will redress my grievances through favour.
I have heavenly blessings in Christ. God will give me all things pertaining to life and godliness. I have a rich inheritance in Christ. For I am a joint heir with Christ, and shall inherit all things from God.

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

One thing David knew very well was that the Lord himself had chosen and anointed him king. Therefore, the Lord would take full responsibility and bring him into this destiny. Therefore, no matter what man’s calculations and plans may be, we know that God is in control.

1. The Rise of the House of David (v1-5)

We see that the house of David was growing in strength. He was king in Hebron for seven years and six months, and he had six sons. His house was prospering, and he had the blessing of the Lord and the presence of the Lord.

2. The fall of Saul’s Household (v6-21)

(1) The Weakness of Ishbosheth (v7-8, 11)

It was the custom at that time for the latter king to inherit the concubines of the former king. Therefore, the possession of Saul’s concubine by Abner was not only a moral issue, but also a threat to the throne. When Ishbosheth pointed out that Abner l was in possession of Saul’s concubines, Abner is very angry. The reaction of Ishbosheth also shows that he was only a puppet king. It is clear that at that time, Abner’s position in the nation of Israel was far above that of Ishbosheth.

(2) The power of Abner (v9-21)

The fact that “hat Abner was strengthening his hold on the house of Saul.” (3:6b) shows that although Ishbosheth was the king of the ten tribes of Israel in the Northern Kingdom, it was actually the marshal, Abner, who was in power behind the scenes. When Ishbosheth pointed out to his face what he was not, Abner retorted with strong, vulgar words, showing no respect for the king at all, and began to change his ways to make a covenant with David.

3. The Slaying of Abner (v22-32)

(1) Joab’s Revenge (v22-27)

Joab righteously accused David of making a covenant with Abner Ostensibly, he was doing it for David’s good, but in reality it was out of a personal vendetta between himself and Abner. Joab then tricked and killed Abner in a hole in the city gate. Though, Joab killed Abner out of favoritism, he did save David from being caught up in becoming Abner’s puppet king.

(2) David shows innocence (v28-39)

a. David curses Joab (v28-29)

Joab had backstabbed and murdered Abner, not only to avenge his brother’s death, but also to remove a potential threat to his own position as marshal. Here we see that Joab was completely self-centered and had no regard for David. He would have killed Abner without discussing it with David. This was very disrespectful of authority and a threat to David’s good name. Therefore, David’s curse on Joab’s family was severe, and Joab suffered the curse solely because of himself.

b. Lift up a lament for Abner (v31-39)

To show that he was totally uninvolved in the matter, David lifted up a mourning for Abner by burying him in the capital city of Hebron. Then, he composed a song of mourning for Abner. And, fasted for a whole day in honour of Abner. All of these actions would convince Israel that the killing of the son of Ner, Abner was not at the will of King David, and eliminate the hostility of the eleven northern tribes.

Conclusion:

We see God’s hand reigning in this, God blocked the plan of Abner to avoid David becoming a puppet king, and made David the king of Israel in His own way.

Brothers and sisters, may we all know our destiny well and trust God Himself to lead us into our destiny. For God is in control of everything!

2 Samuel 2 Overcoming Impulses and Leaving No Regrets’

Introduction: A single slip of the tongue can lead to a hundred years of regret, and a hundred years of looking back.

We have to think clearly before we do anything, so as not to regret it for the rest of our lives. Moreover, there are mistakes that cannot be corrected, and what is wrong is wrong, so don’t do anything that will make you feel uneasy with your own conscience, and it will be too late to turn back when you are old.

1. David’s breath of the tree of life

(1) Victory over self, humility and obedience (V1-3)

David did not rush to make himself king because of Saul’s death and the destruction of Ziklag. Rather, he inquired of God and sought His guidance before setting out. David didn’t do anything on his own, but God made him king and made the people of Judah rise up and follow him. Let us also learn from David’s seeking God in all things, and not making decisions on our own.

(2) Overcoming Resentment and Forgiving (V4-7)

David was not jealous of the tribe of Benjamin because of Saul’s death. He blessed those who did good to Saul, and he struck at those who struck at Saul. David’s mindset is all about blessing.

2. The Breath of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil

(1) Self-centeredness of Abner (V8-11)

Although he knew that God had made David king, Daniel made Ishbosheth king. He treated the people as his private property and stayed in power. He was a self-made man, and Ishbosheth was just a king manipulated by him. Abner did not respect the house of Saul, and did not bow down to Ishbosheth’s authority.

(2) Defeated due to Impulsive Joab (V12-17)

David chose to choose to bless the Ishboshethites, but his chief commander- Joab, pressed on. Acting out of impulsiveness, he chose to stir up excitement in Abner, and what was intended to be a battle to be won or lost by pushing soldiers out to compete with each other, ended up triggering a much larger war.

(3) Defeated due to bloodthirsty Asahel (V18-23)

Asahel chased after Abner, who twice told Asahel to go away, but Asahel, being competitive and stubborn, did not want to stop, and was unfortunately killed by the enemy’s marshal.

(4) Joab who shirked his responsibility (V24-29)

Joab answered that it was because of the playful words of Abner that they start the fight. In fact, the problem was that Joab, who was David’s servant, and David wanted to bless the people in the north, but he was the one who took the army and entered into the place of Benjamin, and finally started the war.

3. The End (V30-V32)

Joab used the world and as a subordinate he failed to follow David properly. In this battle, a total of three hundred and eighty people died on both sides. In a civil war between God’s people, no matter who wins or loses, it is God’s kingdom that suffers, and it is the enemy, the Philistines who are happy. And Joab held a grudge, and in the end came to a tragic end because of his revenge.

Conclusion:

To defeat the impulse is to let the devil win. The only way to overcome impulses and see the way out is to rely on God’s light, put yourself down, and live out the tree of life.

2 Samuel 1 One death news, two reactions.
GK611 Morning Devotion
5/9/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

Introduction: One kind of rice feeds a hundred kinds of people

From Saul’s death, we are shown that the Amalekites and David, who reported the news, reacted to the news of Saul’s death in two very different ways.

1. The Boy Who Wanted to Make a Deadly Fortune (V1-16)

(1) Badly Intentioned, Profit-Motivated

Saul’s death meant that David did not have to flee anymore. So the Amalekite boy, who had a bad heart, traveled a long way to give David the news of Saul’s death with the intention of making a profit.

(2) Not truthful, mixture of truth and falsehood

From the account of Saul’s death in 1Sam 31, and the discrepancy between the Amalekite’s oral account, we can infer that this boy was lying, and his words were mixed with falsehoods, and he made up the lie of killing Saul to try to please David. The great thing about the devil is that he doesn’t tell all lies, but a mixture of truth and falsehood makes it easier for people to fall for his lies.

(3) The Wrong Purpose: Inviting Credit and Losing Your Life

The purpose of the Amalekite boy’s disinformation was to claim credit. He even took credit for Saul’s death, hoping to get a big reward. But the wrong purpose led him to a dead end, and he lost his life instead of claiming the credit!

It is not wrong to plan for one’s own interests, but do not ‘play tricks’ and become a villain with an evil heart and a bad intent! What good is it to gain the whole world and lose one’s life?

2. Honouring David the Anointed One (V17-27)

(1) Putting to death the king’s wicked slayer

David condemned the Amalekite youth to death based on his words. A wicked man who murders a man should pay with his life, let alone if he kills God’s anointed. If David had rewarded him for reporting that he had killed the king, he would have shared in his sin!

Today we must not kill, but we can share testimonies so that our friends and family will repent and rely on the Lord to heal the old self! We also need to examine ourselves daily to exterminate all the evil things and thoughts in our hearts and homes, and to keep away from temptation.

(2) Remembering of Human Goodness Alone

When David heard the news of Saul’s death, instead of rejoicing at the end of his suffering, his immediate reaction was to weep bitterly. He made a dirge for Saul and praised him, remembering only Saul’s goodness and not mentioning his sin at all. This shows that David, in the fear of God, always honoured Saul as God’s anointed king.

We need to follow David’s example of honouring only the good in people. Learn to praise and avoid judgment.

(3) True love in life and death

David and Jonathan were life and death friends who could sacrifice their lives for each other! The depth of their affection was of true love! Therefore, David grieved greatly over Jonathan’s death! And he spoke of their deep and true love in psalms!

Conclusion: for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap!

The very different reactions and results of the Amalekite and David confirm that God is not to be mocked. for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap! (Gal. 6:7) Ask God to help us to live lives that love God and love people! Otherwise we will end up reaping nothing!
