Book of Jeremiah 16

Jeremiah 16: Do you really know God

Introduction: Hearing and Imagination vs. Personal Experience

1. The cost of abandoning God

(1) No hope, no future (V1-4)

God commanded Jeremiah not to get married and have children, because the future judgment would plunge the entire earth into despair, and life would be full of death and pain, without even a chance for burial. This is like a house that is about to collapse. No matter how hard we try to renovate it, it is destined to be uninhabitable.

When we turn away from God and follow our own ideas and plan our own paths, we are setting an unstable foundation for our lives and will eventually lead to despair.

(2) No joy, no peace (V5-13)

God not only told Jeremiah not to get married and have children, but also did not allow him to attend funerals and weddings. God did this to let people know that the days to come would be filled with death and desolation, and that there would be no opportunity for joy or mourning in our lives. At that time, no one would bury the dead, and no one would break bread in mourning, because everyone, young and old, would die. The sound of joy will also disappear, because the land is desolate, and no one is alive.

When we drift away from God and lose the peace and joy He gives us, we must know that this is God’s signal to remind us to return to Him. Only in God can we find true rest and satisfaction and regain His abundant life.

2. Experience God’s faithfulness (V14-18)

Although God’s judgment has come, He has not completely abandoned His people. God promised the Israelites to once again experience His reality personally, this time not through the experiences of their ancestors or historical rumours, but through their own eyes and personal experience of God’s deeds. God wants people to realize that all idols are false and that He alone is the true God.

God’s plan is not just to punish, but to allow us to experience His love and truth once again through these judgments and to restore our intimate relationship with Him. Like a lighthouse, its light and guidance can only be truly felt when the ship is close. God is the same way. He wants us to be close to Him and feel His light and warmth.

3. Believe that God is the only One (V19-21)

When the people experience disaster and judgment, they will eventually wake up and realize that idols cannot protect them, and only Jehovah God is the real saviour. No false thing created by man can compare with the power of God, whose power and grace govern everything from beginning to end.

God’s judgment is there to wake us up, but His grace never leaves us. He hopes that after we have experienced these challenges, we will rely more firmly on Him and realize that He is the only true God.

Conclusion: Not only know Him, but also experience His love personally!

We see that God not only wants us to know Him, but also wants us to experience His love personally. Although His judgment is severe, His mercy and grace are hidden in it. The purpose is to awaken us from our confusion and see His truth and faithfulness.

Jeremiah 15: A way out of despair
GK611 Morning Devotion
12/09/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Deborah

1. No longer care and cherish (v1-9)

A prophet has a very important duty, which is to intercede. This is the fourth time that God told Jeremiah not to intercede anymore, and he said firmly that even if you invite Moses or Samuel to intercede for the people of Judah, it will not help. Because He has determined to judge the rebellious people and will no longer care and cherish them.

2. In despair (v10-14)

Jeremiah knew that God had decided to judge the people of Judah, and that the people would eventually die miserably. Therefore, from the beginning of verse v10 to the next nearly 10 chapters, he exploded a lot of pain, anger, sadness and complaints in his heart to God.

(1) Cry to God (v10)

Prophets are also ordinary people of flesh and blood. On the one hand, he was misunderstood and persecuted by his compatriots, and on the other hand, his intercession was rejected by God three times. Why did you call me to be a prophet, but didn’t listen to my call? It seemed like couldn’t please both sides, so he was scarred and disappointed inside. Therefore, he cried to God in self-pity: Why was I born? Why should I serve as a prophet, a ministry that involves facing persecution?

Brothers and sisters, have you ever had such an experience? In the midst of extreme pain, wishing your mother had not given birth to you?

In times of suffering, God allows us to speak our true feelings. We can come before God and honestly speak to God the negative words and even bitterness in our hearts.

(2) Be comforted by God (v11-14)

Instead of rebuking Jeremiah for murmuring, God immediately comforted him. God promises that His prophecies will come true. When He allowed Babylon to carry the people into captivity in foreign lands, the people would turn to Jeremiah to pray to God for them because of the disasters and sufferings that befell them.

If we suffer persecution for God’s sake, God not only fully understands our pain and struggle, He will also support us, avenge us, and make our enemies reconcile with us. Then we can gain souls for God.

3. God opens the way (v15-21)

(1) Am I living for God? (v15-18)

Jeremiah continued to show that he was a man of God. Therefore, no matter in good times or bad times, even if the people treat him badly, he still takes God’s words as the spiritual food and guidance of life, and he is not like those people who still live in pleasure when disaster strikes.

We may not experience the suffering like Jeremiah, but through the scriptures, we can still examine whether our lives are living for God? If we have not experienced any persecution or suffering in our lives, there are actually two possibilities. First, we are truly like Jeremiah said, we are people who live for God and have no wrong in our lives for the enemy to attack. Otherwise, our lives pose no threat to the enemy at all.

When Jeremiah unreservedly vented all his true feelings and emotions to God, God taught him how to deal with the negative emotions and bitterness in his heart.

(2) I want to be adjusted and returned to God (v19-21)

a) Adjust focus on God (from self-sorrow and self-pity to return to God again)

b) Be holy and eliminate distracting thoughts (distinguish between precious and despicable things and thoughts)

c) Not catering to the public (we are to lead people from the world to the Lord rather than we ourselves fall into the world)

d) Trust in God for protection (Rely firmly on God. Believe that God will be with you and will save you)

Conclusion: Immanuel God

•No matter what hardships we encounter, even if we feel hopeless in the suffering, remember that Immanuel is our God.

•Follow the example of Jeremiah and pour out your heart before God and complain to Him. According to God’s exhortation, turn back to God who calls us, and focus on Him.

•Separate the precious and despicable in our hearts and minds so that we can once again become glorious vessels in God’s hands.

Book of Jeremiah 14

Jeremiah Chapter 14: Crying Out in Drought
GK611 Morning Devotion
11/09/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella

Introduction:

Drought in the Bible often symbolizes spiritual dryness. For today’s believers, we have all experienced a ‘spiritual drought’—a period where we feel distant from God. No matter how hard we try in life, we can’t seem to feel God’s grace and blessings. In moment like this, how should we respond? This passage shows the relationship between prayer, repentance, and God’s righteousness, helping us understand how to return to God in times of difficulty.

1. The Struggles in Drought (V1-6)

Jeremiah 14 begins by describing a terrible drought. In this bleak scene, we see not only the material lack of the people of Judah but also their spiritual dryness. The drought only reflects God’s judgment on their sins but also symbolizes the broken relationship between them and God.

2. The Superficial Repentance (V7-9)

We see the people acknowledge their sins, admitting their rebellion and abandonment of God. However, their remorse is not genuine; they hope God will save them for His own glory and reputation rather than their true repentance.

Here, we also see the people’s disappointment and doubts in God. They feel that God’s salvation seems delayed, even doubting whether He is still with them. They hope for God’s great deliverance as in the past but fail to realize that it is their sins that drive God away.

3. Prayer Not Accepted (V10-12)

Although the people verbally admit their sins, their hearts remain unchanged. They still love “to wander” and continue walking in the path of disobedience. Because they haven’t truly repented, God decides not to listen to their prayers. Thus, God instructs the prophet, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people,” for what they need now is repentance, not blessings.

Sometimes, we may experience similar situations, feeling like our prayers go unanswered. We may have doubts or even disappointment. However, true prayer is not just lip service but a turning of the heart.

4. God’s Further Warning (V13-16)

Jeremiah continues to intercede for the people, attempting to plead for God’s mercy by blaming the false prophets who misled them. However, God’s response is even more severe. He points out that ignorance and naivety are not the reasons the people were deceived—it was pride. God also point out that the false prophets comforted the people with false messages, giving them false hope, preventing true repentance.

Often, the voices of the world may tell us that certain behaviors don’t matter, that God’s standards can be relaxed. Therefore, we must stay vigilant, discerning messages that truly lead to repentance and God’s teachings, avoiding false comforts.

5. Prophecy of Final Judgment (V17-22)

Although God judges the people, He is not indifferent to their suffering. Like a father disciplining his son, He weeps alongside them. Jeremiah continues to plead with God not to completely abandon His people. He acknowledges their sins and asks for God’s deliverance once again. He calls out to God, “For the sake of Your name, do not despise us.”

Though God’s justice demands judgment on sin, His mercy and love always remain with His people. Even in the harshest judgment, God hopes for His people to turn back to Him and re-establish an intimate relationship.

Conclusion:

Today, let us re-examine our relationship with God. Are there any “idols” in our lives that have taken the place that belongs to God? Are we experiencing spiritual dryness, feeling increasingly distant from God? Let us each recalibrate our spiritual direction, walking in God’s light, rejecting false idols, and steadfastly relying on the one true God – Yahweh. May God bestow His grace, allowing us to experience His real presence and abundant blessings every day.

Jeremiah Chapter 13: The Revelation of Judah’s Fourfold Tragedy
GK611 Morning Devotion
10/09/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

Introduction:

The people of Judah, in their pride and idol worship, mistakenly believed they were living a life of freedom and joy, ultimately faced God’s severe punishment. Today, we can learn about God’s revelation from the fourfold tragedy that Judah experienced.

1. From Glory to Ruin (V1-11)

God commanded Jeremiah to perform a prophetic act: he bought a new belt but was told to hide it by the river. Eventually, the new belt became filthy, proclaiming that the people, like the ruined belt, would decay due to their pride and rebellion, turning from glory to ruin, losing their purpose, and being discarded.

God has given us identity and calling, expecting us to live out the glorious testimony. But if we become proud like Judah and ignore His will, our spiritual lives will also descend from glory to ruin! From being useful to useless!

2. From Blessing to Curse (V12-14)

God continued speaking through Jeremiah with the parable of jars filled with wine. While jars full of wine once symbolized blessing and celebration, they now represented God’s wrath and destruction. The proud people would become drunk, clashing with one another, for God would not spare or have mercy on them, leading to their destruction.

Have we forgotten God’s grace in times of blessing and become proud? If blessings are not cherished, they will turn into curses. We must remember that the abundance from God is meant for us to better serve Him and others, not to foster pride.

3. From Light to Darkness (V15-19)

God, through Jeremiah, used the stark contrast between light and darkness to warn the proud people. When one is caught in a sudden storm on a mountain, they should seize the last bit of light and walk the right path. If they wait until the ‘light turns into the shadow of death and becomes darkness,’ they will be lost and taken captive. Even the king and queen mother would not be spared, as the entire nation would be plundered and fall into darkness.

Pride often makes us deaf to God’s warnings. God continuously sends us reminders, but if pride keeps us from listening, our hearts will gradually sink into darkness, distancing us from His grace and guidance. Going astray not only leads to personal loss but also affects everyone around us!

4. From Bride to Harlot (V20-27)

Lastly, God warned through Jeremiah that the proud people, due to their habitual evil and reliance on false gods, would reap what they sow. They would become like a wife who commits adultery, betraying her husband, losing God’s protection, becoming filthy and dishonorable. From God’s beloved bride to a harlot publicly shamed.

Have we, like Judah, made vows of faithfulness to God but gradually strayed? In the spiritual covenant, God remains faithful. But are we still faithful, or have we been enticed by the world, turning into an unfaithful harlot?

Conclusion:

Judah’s fourfold tragedy serves as a warning to our spiritual lives today: pride must be eradicated because it is the root of our separation from God. Pride must die within us, or nothing of God will live in us!

25|Proverb 25

09/09/2024

Book of Jeremiah 12

Jeremiah Chapter 12: Problems Get in the Way, Where is the Grace?
GK611 Morning Devotion
06/09/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IPs Asher

Introduction: In a maze with no way forward or backward, how do we find the way out?

1. When facing difficulties, we can talk to God (v1-4)

Jeremiah’s question: Why do the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer?

(1) The prophet also had questions and confusion

The prophet Jeremiah posed a question to God: Why do the ways of the wicked prosper while the righteous encounter hardship? Asking a profound question: Why do those who fear God with their mouths but whose hearts are far from Him still prosper?

Faced with the people of Anathoth who wanted to harm him, and even his hometown and family could not be trusted, he could not help but confide in his heavenly Father. Brothers and sisters, do we dare to express our questions and confusions to God in difficult situations?

(2) Helplessness and prayer in difficult situations

Jeremiah felt helpless at injustice, especially the suffering of innocent people. He calls upon God to administer justice and avenge the righteous. Do we still rely on God and seek His justice in the midst of incomprehensible difficulties?

2. God’s response: reminder and hope

God’s three-level response: the time has not come, paying the price, and building for the future.

(1) Response 1: Keep the faith (v5-6)

God responded to Jeremiah: “How can you race with horses if you are tired of running with men on foot?” This sentence inspired Jeremiah to understand that the real test was yet to come and that he would face greater challenges in the future. God wanted him to focus on grace, not hardship.

(2) Response 2: God bears the price (v7-13)

God explains His pain and dissatisfaction with the people, showing that justice is not absent, but that He is bearing the price. God left his home and delivered his beloved wife “into the hands of his enemies” (v7).

Do we realize the price God has paid in our lives? Do we appreciate and respond to His grace?

(3) Response 3: The Demolition of Reconstruction (v14-17)

God responded to Jeremiah that the current demolition was preparation for future rebuilding. God’s grace not only solves present problems but also paves the way for future blessings. Just as an old house is torn down in order to build a new one, so the “dismantling” that God allows is for the “building of a new house” in our lives.

Conclusion: From Problem to Grace – God Has Guidance and Promise

When faced with hardship and injustice, we should focus on God’s grace and promises. God allows challenges and discipline, but His intention is for our repentance and revival. Let us turn our eyes from our problems to God’s grace and respond to His call.

24|Proverb 24

08/09/2024

Book of Jeremiah 11

Jeremiah Chapter 10: The Covenant of Life
GK611 Morning Devotion
05/09/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:The covenant in Christ allows us to create an “unbreakable bond” with God, and people…!

I. God and People Have a Covenant (V1-8)

1. Are you a person who keeps the covenant and obeys? (V1-2)

2. Are you cursed for breaking the covenant? (V3, 8)

3. This covenant grants the Promised Land! (V4-5)

4. God warns us every morning! (V6-7)

We expect God to make promises and commitments to us. God is indeed faithful to His
words and covenant, and loving towards us. This covenant binds us with God, who
is the absolute greatest, strongest, and wisest! Your outcome is determined by
whether you listen or not! So what about us?

II. People Dare to Break the Covenant (V9-19)

1. The issue of conspiring in betrayal (V9-10)

Collusion and complicity! In a community, you are the average of those you spend the most
time with. It’s human nature to imitate others, you will become the person you associate with the most!

2. Prayers are not heard by God (V11-12)

How desolate and tragic it is to live without God’s blessing and protection!
Breaking the covenant with God means losing the Almighty as your support; and
since the power of false gods is limited, you end up with nothing but failures!

3. God sees it as adultery (V13-15)

In the Ten Commandments given to the chosen people, God clearly states not to worship
idols or commit adultery; yet the chosen people repeatedly committed these sins.
Think about it—are these also our problems? The
more God forbids something, the more we tend to fall into it!

4. Good fruits turn bad because of sin (V16-19)

You reap what you sow—this is common sense. God is warning His children in this way, so why bring trouble upon yourself? Reflect on the past – the grace and favor you received when your relationship with God was close, and compare it with the current – the lack of Truth when you are
distant from God. We must know the principles of bearing good fruit!

III. God’s Righteous Judgment (V20-23)

Anathoth was a descendant of Benjamin, it is also a place near Jerusalem which was the birthplace of the prophet Jeremiah. God’s people, God’s household, are nevertheless the
first to face judgment. As the Apostle Peter also said: “Judgment begins with God’s
household” (1 Peter 4:17). If this is the case, shouldn’t we live our lives seriously and not be
complacent.?

Conclusion: Take This Covenant Seriously!

Even covenants between human are legally binding and cannot be easily broken; how
much more so is a covenant with God?
When we discover problems, we should immediately call out to the Lord, turn back, and return to the blessed covenant of life.
Let us repent as the Holy Spirit enlightens us!
