Jeremiah Chapter 10: The LORD is the Only True God
GK611 Morning Devotion
04/09/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella

Introduction:

This passage is a strong warning and reminder to the Israelites, intended to make them recognize the unique divinity of the LORD, warn them about the futility of idol worship, and encourage them to rely on God’s wisdom and guidance.

I. Condemnation of the People’s Idol Worship (V1-11)

1.The Futility of Idols (V1-5)

The scripture describes the nature of idols—they are merely a piece of wood, crafted by human hands into ornaments. The scripture mentions that idols “are like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, they cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk.” This vividly illustrates the powerlessness of idols. In our lives today, idols may manifest as our dependence on certain material things, whether it be money, status, relationships, or other things.

2.The Supremacy of God (V6-11)

This section emphasizes the absolute supremacy of the LORD God. His name is mighty and above all other names. His honor surpasses everything, and no one can compare to Him. All people should praise and worship God alone. At that time, the people of Judah were not only hypocritical but also pursued idols while serving God. They completely inverted their faith and values, spending their energy in those futile “gods” while neglecting the true Creator. Therefore, we must understand that only God controls all things, and only He knows our future.

II. Praise for the Greatness of the LORD (V12-16)

This passage is a hymn praising the one true God who created and governs the universe. Jeremiah contrasts the futility of idols with the majesty of God, emphasizing that God is the only incomparable true God, the true and eternal King. In reality, we can often see the beauty of God’s creation. Every sunrise and sunset, every rain, reveals the greatness and power of God.

III. Announcement of the People’s Imminent Captivity (V17-22)

The Israelites are about to face a situation where they will be cast out, leaving their homes, and will suffer and be taken captive. All this signifies God’s punishment on Israel for turning away from Him. However, this passage also reflects God’s sovereignty, as He controls the course of history, including the rise and fall of nations.

For our lives today, this serves as a warning that if we choose to rely on false ‘idols’ or unrighteous behavior, the ultimate outcome will be disaster.

IV. The Prophet’s Intercession for the People (V23-25)

This reflects Jeremiah’s humility and dependence on God. He acknowledges the limitations and helplessness of humanity and asks God to have mercy on His people when executing justice. He also prays for God’s wrath to be poured out on the nations that do not know Him.

In our lives, we often face uncertain and uncontrollable situations. In these moments, we should pray to God, act according to His will, and not rely on our own understanding and judgment.

Conclusion:

Brothers and sisters, the LORD alone is the true God, surpassing all creation, and ruling over everything. Today, we live in a world full of temptations and false promises, where various ‘idols’ try to take the place of God in our lives. However, God’s word reminds us that only God is truly trustworthy, and only He can bring us true peace and fulfillment.

Book of Jeremiah 9

Jeremiah 9 Cry in the tears of the prophet
GK611 Morning Devotion
03/09/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

Introduction:

Jeremiah was called the ‘weeping prophet’ because he shed countless tears over the fall of Israel. In his heart, those tears were not only a lament for the past, but also a call for the future.

1. Heartbroken crying (V1-6)

Jeremiah was deeply saddened by the depravity of the people of Israel. He strongly expressed his grief at the moral decay of his people, describing their mutual deceit, hypocrisy, and disloyalty. His tears were not only personal sorrow, but also represented God’s heartache over the people’s refusal to know Him.

In our lives, do we also grieve over the evil in the world, the breakdown of families, the betrayal of friends? Have you ever shed tears for someone else’s loss? Jeremiah’s tears remind us of that sin not only hurts us, but it deeply cuts into the heart of God. We should repent of our own sins and those of others and pray for God’s mercy and help.

2. Announcement of Judgment (V7-16)

God announced judgment on the people through Jeremiah. The hearts of the people are like dross in metal and cannot be purified. They follow their stubborn hearts to worship false gods. Therefore, God will bring punishment to refine them for their sins, to purify their hearts with judgment.

Although God’s judgment is severe, it is necessary because sin cannot be tolerated! When we face the problems in our lives, are we willing to accept God’s refinement? This is not only outward behaviour, but also inner purity.

3. Tragic ending (V17-22)

God prophesied through Jeremiah a scene of mourning and death, in which even women and children would not be spared. This passage foretells the tragic outcome that will befall the Israelites because of their unrepentance.

Here we are reminded that weeping and sorrow are not enough to get us out of trouble. Only sincere repentance can bring about real change. If we just complain and weep over the challenges and difficulties in life without thinking about our mistakes and sins, and without turning back to God, our weeping will be in vain.

4. The heart must be circumcised (V23-26)

Through Jeremiah, God called on the people to face their own problems and not to boast about their wisdom, strength, and wealth. The only thing they should boast about was seeking to know God and doing what pleases Him. Because what God values is inner piety; He used circumcision as an example to indicate that what He accepts is not circumcision of the external body, but circumcision that keeps the covenant in the heart.

Christians today face the same challenge. We may appear to be devout on the outside, participating in church activities, giving, and serving, but if we do not truly repent in our hearts and establish an intimate relationship with God, then these external manifestations will be like an “uncircumcised heart” and we cannot please God, cannot stand in the judgment of God.

Conclusion:

The prophet’s tears are filled with God’s sorrow for the sins of the people and God’s righteous judgment on sins. In these tears we hear a cry for repentance, a cry for a true knowledge of God. Let us draw wisdom from Jeremiah’s cry, repent and turn to God, and pursue a real relationship with God!

Book of Jeremiah 7

Jeremiah 7: Is My Temple of Life a Den of Robbers?
GK611 Morning Devotion
29/08/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah

Introduction:

The message in Jeremiah chapters 7-10 is the third message God gave the prophet Jeremiah to deliver at the gate of the temple in the southern kingdom of Judah. Since it was preached at the temple gate, it is known as the “Temple Sermon.”

I. Do Not Turn God’s Temple into a Den of Robbers (V1-11)

The temple was the center of life for the people of Judah. The people of Judah were passionate about the temple but had forgotten that the true purpose of coming to the temple was to worship God. Therefore, God sent Jeremiah to the temple gate to warn everyone who came through the gate of the temple to worship God to reform their actions and truly repent. They were not to turn God’s temple into a den of robbers. How did God’s temple become a den of robbers?

1 Listening to Lies (V4)

When Jeremiah warned the people to repent, they listened to the false prophets and teachers who deceived them, thinking that since God had chosen the temple as His dwelling place, it would never be destroyed. So, they performed religious rituals to superficially worship God without truly seeking Him.

Are we people who are unfamiliar with the truth and easily believe the lies of the world, false teachers, or Satan?

False teachers diminish God’s holiness with man-defined grace and remove God’s righteousness with human notions of love. This leads many believers to become unteachable, casually sinning and not fearing God.

2 Doing Things God Detests (V5-11)

In addition to deceitfully dealing with others and neighbors, oppressing the foreigners, orphans, and widows, shedding innocent blood, stealing, killing, committing adultery, perjury, and idolatry, the people also, after doing all these detestable things, naively believed that as long as they came to the temple to worship and sacrifice, they could make peace with God and silence His wrath, and continue their evil ways.

May God help us not to shuffle between the sinful world and the temple. Do not treat the temple as a resting place or a shelter for robbers after committing sins. Do not let ourselves become the robbers with only external holiness in God’s holy temple.

II. Do Not Let God Set a Limit to His Grace (V12-20)

The people had long violated the covenant, exhausting God’s abundant kindness, patience, and tolerance. Therefore, God wanted the people of Judah to see the outcome of Shiloh.

God is rich in grace and slow to anger. But if people repeatedly trample on God’s grace, He will set a limit to it. Once this limit is reached, people will face God’s judgment. Our hearts must fear God, be willing to be disciplined by Him, and genuinely repent to align with the Truth so that God will never set a limit to His grace for us.

III. Listen and Do What God Commands (V21-34)

The people did not listen to God, so what they did was not what God commanded.

1 Do Not Replace Obedience with Sacrifice (V21-28)

According to the law, burnt offerings and peace offerings are different; the burnt offering must be entirely burned on the altar, and no one can eat the meat of a burnt offering. But God, contrary to the norm, asked them to eat the meat because when people do not listen to God, sacrifices become meaningless and irrelevant to Him.

To obey is better than sacrifice; to heed is better than the fat of rams. What God cares about is not the offering. Sacrifices are just a way for us to examine whether our lives obey God.

God’s requirement for the people was simple: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you. This is also God’s requirement for us today. Let us resolve to live lives of obedience to God.

2 Do Not Burn Your Children (V 29-34)

The people of Judah, while offering sacrifices at the temple, also went to the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their children as sacrifices to the idol Moloch. Therefore, in verse 32, God said that this valley of sacrifice would become a valley of slaughter. They would be slaughtered by the Babylonians here, and their bodies would become food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.

In today’s society governed by the rule of law, it is impossible for parents to burn their children as sacrifices to false gods. However, if we spend our lives or our children’s lives pursuing worldly pleasures and material satisfaction instead of living for the Lord or nurturing our children to understand the truth and fear God, we are essentially burning our or our children’s lives in the Valley of Ben Hinnom.

Conclusion:

Do not let your life become a den of robbers, and do not let the church become a gathering place for robbers. We must earnestly listen to and obey what God commands. Let God’s church be filled with people who obey Him and pursue life.

Jeremiah 6 Be Refined or Be Rejected? Humans’ choice!

Introduction:

Israel faced the threat of destruction due to their sins, betrayal, and refusal to repent. However, even amidst these warnings, God showed His mercy and expressed His willingness to refine His people so they would not be rejected. But everything depends on whether the people are willing to turn back and heed God’s calling.

I. The Impending Destruction (V1-9)

1.The Announcement of Judgment (V1-2)

Disaster and great destruction are approaching from the north, and Jerusalem is facing devastation. Jeremiah warns the residents of Jerusalem about the coming war and destruction. They are likened to a beautiful woman of Zion, but their beauty will be devastated by the invaders. Judgment will come like a storm with no place to hide.

2.The Approaching Enemy (V3-6)

The enemy will approach Jerusalem like shepherds leading their flocks. War is inevitable. The residents of Jerusalem are warned to prepare for this unavoidable war, as the enemy will attack relentlessly.

3.God’s Righteous Judgment (V7-9)

Jerusalem’s wickedness pours out like a well pouring out its water. And God’s judgment is unavoidable. God decides to punish His people until their sins are completely removed, for His righteousness does not allow these sins to continue.

When warnings appear, will we, like the residents of Jerusalem, ignore them, or will we choose to be alert and take action? Those who heed warnings and take measures often avoid disaster, while those who ignore warnings are ultimately destroyed.

II. The Stubborn Depravity of the People (V10-15)

1.Unwilling Ears (V10-12)

Jeremiah laments the stubbornness of the people, whose ears are closed and unable to hear God’s warnings. As a result, God’s wrath will be poured out upon them, and the entire society will face destruction.

2.The Hypocrisy of Religious Leaders (V13-15)

The religious leaders of Israel did not truly care for the souls of the people; instead, they used false messages of peace to appease the people, leading them deeper into sin.

In modern society, do we also have “uncircumcised ears” that prevent us from listening to correct teachings? Just like a patient who refuses a doctor’s diagnosis and treatment, the result can only be a worsening condition.

III. The Prophet’s Final Warning (V16-30)

1.Warning and Listening (V16-21)

The Lord calls His people to return to the Truths, but they stubbornly refuse to listen. Little do they know that these words are the horn of life-and-death matters and the alarms of impending disaster. Ultimately, judgment comes.

2.Invasion from the North (V22-25)

The people are indifferent to sins and turn a deaf ear to the prophet’s warnings. Eventually, they face invasion and destruction from an enemy from the north. The people will be panic-stricken as God’s judgment falls.

3.Rejected Silver (V26-30)

The people are like discarded metal. No matter how much it is refined, the impurities cannot be removed. Ultimately, God declares them as rejected silver, no longer of value. God’s testing reveals that the people, like silver with too many impurities, cannot be refined and are ultimately rejected.

Therefore, the opportunity for repentance is limited. If not cherished, spiritual apathy and stubbornness will gradually cause us to lose our relationship with God, eventually falling into endless darkness.

Conclusion: The Urgency of Repentance

Opportunity for Repentance: Jeremiah Chapter 6 reminds us that while God’s judgment is imminent, the door for repentance is still open.
Call to Respond: Choose to repent, accept God’s refinement, and avoid the destiny of being rejected.

Book of Jeremiah 5

Jeremiah 5 What will be your end?

Introduction: Life is like a movie

1. The sins and apostasy of the people (V1-9)

God issued a strong accusation through Jeremiah, pointing out the sin and apostasy of Jerusalem. God instructed Jeremiah to walk through the streets of Jerusalem looking for a man who would do righteousness and seek truth. But he searched the city and couldn’t find anyone. The people’s sin and deviation from God are extremely serious, and God’s people have completely strayed from God’s way. This shows God’s heartache over the fall of the people.

This passage reminds us that sin is not only personal but also collective. When an entire society collectively deviates from God’s standards, it will ultimately bring about God’s judgment. Therefore, we cannot compromise the teachings of truth and values because of the general depravity of society. The degradation of society should not be an excuse for our degradation but should be a reason for us to persist in doing the right things!

2. The consequences of insisting on not repenting (V10-19)

In this passage, God continues to warn the people through Jeremiah that failure to repent will lead to serious consequences and impending destruction. Although God declared destruction, he left room to allow some people to survive. However, although the people have been warned repeatedly by God, they still remain hard-hearted and do not repent, and they will eventually suffer the consequences unless they turn back to God.

This passage reminds us that the consequences of refusing to repent are dire and that although God is patient, He is not infinite. When we reject God’s guidance and warnings again and again, we will eventually face irreversible judgment.

3. God will punish sins and judge righteously (V20-29)

This passage focuses on God’s judgment, emphasizing that God is righteous and that His judgment is based on mankind’s evil deeds and responses to Him. Although God is loving, His justice requires that sin be punished. The people incurred God’s judgment because they did not fear God and did not act righteously.

God’s judgment is like a fair judge who will not be swayed by anyone’s excuses or refusal to admit fault. Any attempt to escape or ignore God’s righteous judgment will not change God’s judgment. We need to do justice in our lives and fear God to avoid suffering God’s righteous judgment!

4. Final appeal: There is a way to repent (V30-31)

This passage is God’s final appeal to the people. Jeremiah asked: What will you do when the end comes? This sentence is a serious warning to Israel, prompting them to reflect on their actions and consider the ultimate consequences. God still gives you a last chance. If you can repent and turn to God, God is still willing to forgive.

God always gives us opportunities to repent. If we seize the opportunity and turn to God, we will not continue to sink in falsehood and deception but will move towards a better ending.

Conclusion: The final outcome depends on today’s decision

Today, God still gives us the opportunity to repent; are you willing to humble yourself before God and seek His forgiveness and way out?
How we end up depends on our decisions today!
