18|Proverb 18

25/08/2024

Jeremiah Chapter 4: The alarm of judgment is sounding!
GK611 Morning Devotion
23/08/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher

Introduction: Alarm systems for buildings

1. When the alarm sounds: act immediately!

1) Return to God (V1)

The warnings of God’s righteous judgment are like sirens, given repeatedly through His chosen prophets. Although the situation is serious and almost irreversible, God the Father still retains a glimmer of hope deep in His heart, hoping that the people will hear His voice, turn around according to His instructions, and return to God, thereby avoiding disaster.

2) Return to God sincerely (V2)

If we sincerely repent, abandon idols, no longer hesitate, and vow by the Lord in truth, justice, and righteousness, we will be able to make all the families on earth blessed through his descendants according to God’s promise to Abraham.

3) Return to God (V3)

Reclaiming your wasteland is like adjusting our hearts, allowing God’s justice to nourish our souls like rain.

4) Establish a new covenant with God (V4)

Self-circumcision is a metaphor for renewing the covenant with God. It is also a sign of the covenant between Abraham’s descendants and God, symbolizing the abandonment of fleshly desires. Although this action may cause pain, it shows that we are willing to consecrate our lives to God because God is holy! God hopes that we can also experience this kind of circumcision in our spiritual life.

5) Enter the fortified city (V5)

In times of war, large flags would be erected in the city to indicate places where people could take refuge, and people outside the city could flee there to avoid being attacked by the enemy.

6) Escape without delay (V6-8)

A large flag should be raised over Zion to instruct the refugees outside the city to quickly take refuge in Zion. This is God’s instruction, because He allows the enemy to invade from the north. If you don’t escape immediately, you will face the enemy’s attack.

2. The alarm sounds: The enemy is approaching the city!

1) Wake up! (V9-13)

Faced with the threat of foreign invasion mentioned by God, Judah was besieged by the enemy. The enemy had already set out, but the people seemed unprepared. The enemy had clearly arrived at the city, but the people remained indifferent, thinking that the surrounding area was peaceful and did not respond to the news of the war.

Brothers and sisters, we should not be like ignorant sheep who think we are safe even though the wolf is in front of us and end up becoming the wolf’s delicacies. We must wake up!

2) Repent! (V14-18)

God is asking our hearts, how long will evil thoughts exist? God constantly reminds us not to think that spiritual warfare is an illusion, that it is real and imminent. We should not be as ignorant as the people of Israel, for the enemy comes like a whirlwind and swifter than an eagle.

3. The alarm sounds again: How do people respond? (V19-31)

The prophet was anxious in his heart, for he heard the sound of trumpets and the cry of battle, and could not remain silent, but the news of destruction continued to come. The prophet saw that the land was desolate, and the cities were destroyed, and he became more and more anxious as he saw it, but the people remained foolish.

Today’s passage not only reminds us to repent, but it also paints a picture of the Babylonian attack. The land will be destroyed, the trumpets of battle have sounded, and the armies are approaching. Judah was unable to resist, no one could rescue him, and he had nowhere to escape.

When we face difficulties, only Almighty God can solve all problems!

Conclusion: Listen to God’s words and return to God!

Jeremiah 3 Who Is My One and Only?
GK611 Morning Devotion
22/08/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah

I. What Amazing Grace We Squander (v.1-5)

God likens His relationship with His chosen people to that of a marriage. According to the law, if a wife who has been divorced remarries and her second husband either dies or divorces her, the first husband is not allowed to take her back. The prophet Jeremiah explains that Judah, still in a covenant with God but having betrayed Him through idolatry, has committed an unforgivable sin. Judah deserves to be divorced forever and is unworthy to be God’s wife again. However, the loving-kindness God surpasses the demands of the law and He is willing to take back the unfaithful Israel. This is an immense act of grace! The holy God, despite Israel’s impurity, loves her with an everlasting love. Instead of abandoning her, He cherishes her and gives her another chance to return to Him.

As we reflect on our past sins, we realise that if it weren’t for God’s incredible grace that gives us a chance to return, we should all end up in the lake of fire.

God describes His people, who have committed spiritual adultery with idols, as prostitutes waiting by the roadside for customers. Their mentality is compared to that of Arabs ambushing in the wilderness, ready to pounce on anyone they see. Moreover, the people of God squander His grace, believing that He will not remain angry forever and will surely forgive and help them. As a result, they do not sincerely repent and continue to follow their own desires.

Are we like the Israelites, squandering God’s grace? Do we overlook the necessity of repentance and the pursuit of holiness, assuming that as long as we say “sorry” to God, He will continually forgive us?

II. Despising Rebukes with Insincere Repentance (v.6-11)

1.Numbness to Sin (v.6-8)

During King Josiah’s reign, a nationwide religious reform was implemented. However, this reform was superficial, limited to external behaviour and not changing the hearts of the people. The backslidden Israelites continued to engage in idolatry, becoming numb to sin. Consequently, God allowed Assyria to capture the northern kingdom.

Do we remain vigilant against and deliberately avoiding things that displease God? Or have we become numb over time, as we become complacent in our faith? Often, when we know what pleases God but choose to indulge our flesh instead, we quickly become numb to sin. Eventually, like a frog being boiled slowly, it will be too late when death strikes.

2.Insincere Repentance (v.9-11)

The Lord condemns Judah as more corrupted than Israel because, despite witnessing the
downfall of the northern kingdom, Judah persisted in idol worship. Worse still, they pretended to repent while continuing to sin. Thus, God calls them deceitful.

We have all heard the saying “those who do not know are not guilty” Today, we know many truths of God and His demands on our lives. But do we deceitfully worship God on one hand while secretly engaging in things that displease Him, thinking that God doesn’t see?

III. God Actively Calls Us Back! (v.12-19)

1.A Deep Call for Genuine Repentance (12-13)

God loves His people deeply. Whether they are the northern kingdom already in exile or the southern kingdom on the brink of destruction, God actively and compassionately calls out to them, “Return!” God understands human weakness and knows that people cannot live righteously on their own. Thus, He actively calls and forgives their sins, teaching them to genuinely repent and restore their relationship with Him.

On the Heartified Commandments, God is revealed as the only Creator and loving Heavenly Father. His love is unending, deep, and wide. Let us align our hearts with God’s heart intimately and allow no idols to occupy our hearts, not even a little. However, if we do sin against God, let us always remember that there are only two directions in life: away from God or back to Him. Let us choose to return to God quickly with genuine repentance.

2.Actively Healing the Backsliding Illness (v.14-25)

The compassionate Heavenly Father is soft-hearted. His heart aches when He sees His beloved people suffering and unable to find a way out. Thus, He actively calls out to His backslidden people, “Return!” and even promises to heal their backsliding illness.

How does God heal the backsliding illness?

a) Shepherds Who Lead Them Back to God (v.15-19)

God promises to give Israel shepherds after His own heart. These shepherds will guide them with knowledge and wisdom, leading them on the right path. God will also be present with them, so the people no longer need to rely on the physical Ark of the Covenant to confirm God’s presence as they did in the Old Testament. God further promises to reunite Judah and Israel, bringing them back to the promised land and making Jerusalem a blessing to all nations. The people will call God “Father” and will no longer turn away from Him.

b) Salvation Comes from Yahweh (v.20-23)

God’s people believed they could find salvation and help through idols. However, God leads them to realize that placing their hope for salvation in various powers and idols is ultimately in vain. God alone is their God, and only by relying on Him can they be saved.

The promises God made to Israel also apply to us. To receive these promises, we must recognize God as our only God and never forsake Him.

Conclusion: God is Our One and Only

– Loving God means not squandering His grace.
– God is our assurance of salvation.
– We must recognize God, love Him, and serve Him faithfully

Book of Jeremiah 2

Jeremiah 2 The Consequences of Forsaking God and the Call to Repentance
GK611 Morning Devotion
20/08/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

Introduction:

Jeremiah Chapter 2 is God’s accusation against the Israelites through the prophet Jeremiah, revealing the consequences of their betrayal and the necessity of repentance.

I. God’s Grace and Israel’s Ungratefulness (v1-8)

1. Israel’s Zeal and Loyalty to God (v1-3)

Through Jeremiah, God first recalls His relationship with the Israelites, describing their initial love for Him during the wilderness period. During that time, Israel trusted God fully, but as time passed, they gradually forgot His grace.

In our lives, we may gradually drift away from God due to work, family, or other stresses. Therefore, we must constantly remind ourselves to reflect on and be grateful for God’s work in our lives, maintaining our worship and reliance on Him.

2. The Beginning of Israel’s Ungratefulness and Betrayal (v4-6)

The Israelites gradually drifted from their relationship with God, choosing to follow worthless idols and abandoning God’s guidance and protection. They no longer remembered how God delivered them from slavery in Egypt and provided for them in the wilderness, instead turning to idols of no value.

Today, we must continually remember God’s grace in our lives. We should be thankful not only in good times but also rely on God steadfastly during difficulties.

3. Disloyalty to God and the Defilement of the Holy Land (v7-8)

The Israelites’ actions defiled the land God had given them, which was not just a defilement of the land but also an offense against God. God had given them the Promised Land, expecting them to keep His laws, worship Him, and glorify Him, but they defiled His gift with irreverent behavior.

II. The Twofold Evil of Forsaking God (v9-19)

1. Idolatry and Spiritual Decline (v9-12)

The Israelites traded the glorious God for worthless and useless idols, an act of great desecration and betrayal. Even pagan nations had not done anything as foolish. This exchange was not only an issue of idolatry but also a sign of the nation’s spiritual decline. They disregarded their covenant with God and turned to worthless idols, leading to deeper confusion and despair.

2. The Sin of Forsaking the Source of Living Water (v13)

The first sin of the Israelites was abandoning God, the only source that could sustain their lives and satisfy their souls. Their second sin was trying to replace God with their own ways. They dug cisterns for themselves—broken cisterns that could not hold water. This means they pursued false gods and worthless things, trying to find fulfillment, but ended up with nothing.

Therefore, we must return to God, acknowledging that He is our only true satisfaction.

3. The Emptiness and Pain of Forsaking God (v14-19)

The price of forsaking God is suffering and misery. After turning away from God, the Israelites not only lost spiritual blessings but also fell into worldly troubles and pain. God reminded them that all these consequences were the result of their own choices.

We must be careful not to lose long-term blessings for short-term pursuits. Only by returning to God’s embrace can we find true peace and satisfaction.

III. The Folly of Betrayal and the Call to Repentance (v20-37)

1. Repeated Betrayal and the Opportunity for Repentance (v20-26)

God had once delivered Israel from slavery, giving them freedom. However, they repeatedly betrayed God, refusing to serve Him and instead served idols, committing adultery on every high hill and under every green tree. They refused to be God’s servants for salvation but became slaves to sin leading to death. Despite this, God still called the Israelites to repentance, hoping they would realize their folly and betrayal and return to Him.

Are we willing to seize the opportunity to repent and return to God? Remember, repentance is not just a verbal confession but also a turning back in action.

2. The Futility of Blindly Pursuing Idols (v27-28)

The Israelites prayed to wood and stone, treating these lifeless idols as their gods, forsaking the true and living God. When trouble came, they cried out to these idols for deliverance, but these idols had no power to save them. This is a mockery of their idolatry and a revelation of their misguided faith.

This reminds us that when we face challenges, we should first seek God’s help rather than relying on worldly methods.

3. The Necessity of Repentance and God’s Mercy (v29-37)

Despite the Israelites’ stubborn refusal to accept God’s correction, God remained full of mercy and patience, giving them chances to repent. This is a display of God’s loving nature; He does not want to see His people perish and always hopes they will turn back to Him.

Brothers and sisters, repentance is key to reconciliation with God. Though God’s mercy is boundless, we must not abuse His grace. We need to truly repent and return to God’s path.

Conclusion: Return to the Source of Living Water

Let us always remember God’s grace and faithfulness, holding firm to our faith in Him and not allowing any worldly thing to replace God’s place in our hearts. When we find ourselves straying from the right path, we must immediately repent and return to God, for only in Him can we find true fulfillment and peace.

Book of Jeremiah 1

Jeremiah 1 Break through limitations and release God’s word
GK611 Morning Devotion
20/08/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

Introduction: Have you ever felt constrained by certain limitations?

1. Break through the limitations of fate – accept the call (V1-5)

God’s choice of Jeremiah was not accidental but was determined before he was even born, and his life mission has been set! God told Jeremiah: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations. (V5)

God’s predestination and election reveal that He has a unique plan for each of us. Regardless of background or identity, God’s call can transcend the limitations of destiny. Sometimes we may feel that the environment and conditions do not allow it, but as long as we bravely accept God’s call, God has already prepared everything for us.

2. Remove the shackles of fear — release authority (V6-10)

Jeremiah felt that he was young and could not speak, so he was afraid of facing God’s call. However, God encouraged Jeremiah not to be bound by fear, assuring Him that He would be with him and giving him authority to uproot, tear down, build up, and plant.

We all may feel fearful and insecure when facing God’s call, feeling not qualified or inadequate. But God calls us not because of our ability, but because of His plan and power. When we act under God’s authority, our words and actions can bring about both tearing down and building up. Trust that God has given us enough strength and authority to do His work.

3. Surpass the pressure of the environment — witness the vision (V11-16)

God showed Jeremiah the coming judgment through two visions (the almond branch and the boiling pot). God’s message of judgment was severe and terrifying. Jeremiah should not have had the courage to immediately preach such a message to his compatriots. Therefore, God asked Jeremiah to witness the vision and asked him to fully believe that God’s words would come true, helping him to overcome the pressure of the environment and bravely convey God’s will.

For Christians today, this means we learn to rely on God to transcend the limitations of our circumstances and abilities, and to faithfully share and practice God’s word, no matter what challenges or difficulties we face. Because God’s word never fails, His plan will always come true.

4. Overcoming hostile attacks — confident in promises (V17-19)

God commanded Jeremiah to ” prepare himself and arise” to proclaim God’s word in the face of opposition from nations, kings, and people on earth. God promised to make Jeremiah as strong as a wall of bronze and an iron pillar, able to overcome all hostile attacks; God promised His presence and protection to enable Jeremiah to carry out his mission fearlessly.

When we encounter strong opposition in our lives or in our faith, we need to remember God’s promise of His presence and protection and not to shrink back or give up because of the voice of opposition. As long as we stick to God’s trust, God will lead us to overcome all hostile attacks and complete His mission.

Conclusion:

God calls us to break through all kinds of inner and outer limitations, follow Jeremiah’s example, fearlessly go out and release God’s words,
Let God’s will be accomplished in everyone’s life!

Book of Psalm 33
