Ephesians 6: Do Your Part in Victory and Battle

Introduction: Life is full of battles

I. The Battle for the Parent-Child Master-Servant Relationship (v1-9)

Ephesians 6 today picks up where we left off yesterday and continues to talk about the parent-child relationship in family life. As parents and children, there are duties to be performed and how to build a harmonious relationship of love and trust.

1. Parents and Children (v1-4)

The word ‘obey’ is made up of the words ‘hear’ and ‘under’, which means that children are under the authority of their parents, so they should obey their parents.

Paul specifically emphasises that converted children are to obey their parents. ‘Obedience’ is not blind obedience without limitations. The prerequisite is to obey ‘in the Lord’. That is, we are to listen to what is not contrary to the principles of the Bible. For example, if a parent wants a young person to spend more time with them, this is not against biblical truth.

If your parents command you to do something that is against biblical principles and is not ‘in the Lord’, then of course we can disobey them. However, we must explain to our parents, in a very humble and respectful manner, why we cannot obey them. We should try to gain the understanding of our parents, and hold on to the truth with gentleness and firmness, and live as witnesses to the glory of God.

In fact, in today’s world where individualism is prevalent, young people often use the “generation gap” as a reason for not obeying their parents. Even imperfect parents are allowed by God to be used as vessels of discipline and moulding for their children. Therefore, the ‘generation gap’ is the medium God uses for children to learn to obey their parents.

It is the duty of children to honour their parents today. This is the first commandment with promise. God’s promise to those who honour their parents is that they will be blessed and live long in this world. Whether our life span is long or short, without our parents, there would be no us. We are to be thankful for our parents’ upbringing, and even more so, we are to love and honour and respect them while they are still alive.

The duty of a father is to treat his children with gentleness and not to provoke them to anger. A harsh and severe attitude either frustrates the children or provokes their flesh to rise up against their parents.

Fathers, have you, either intentionally or unintentionally, neglected your responsibilities to your children, often becoming the absentee father in your home?

Paul says that if you raise them according to the Lord’s teachings, with actions of discipline, encouragement, warning, and reproof, you will be able to keep your children firmly planted in the truth. So that your children will be firmly rooted in the truth, and live a life that is God-fearing and blessed by God.

2. Master-servant (v5-9)

v5-9 is the relationship between the master and the servant, the servant being the slave of the household. Paul teaches these believing slaves to obey their incarnate masters with the fear of Christ, as they obey Christ, honestly from the heart. They were to do the will of God, both before and after, and to serve their masters willingly as if they were serving the Lord.

Brothers and sisters in the workplace, the workplace is the place where you and I serve God, and it is also the place where spiritual life is practiced. Do you listen to your boss and authority as if you were serving the Lord, or do you criticise and judge him behind his back? Or perhaps resent your boss in your heart?

The Apostle Paul did not ask believers who were masters to free their slaves, but reminded them that they share with their servants an unbiased Lord in heaven, so do not intimidate them. Today, if we have domestic helper at home, or subordinate, do we often use intimidating words to threaten our subordinates or helpers?

It is the duty of Christians to avoid many unnecessary battles and injuries in life. Let us be blessed and live long by being right with God and living out the breath of the tree of life. Brothers and sisters in the workplace have the right relationship and need to be rewarded by the Lord.

II. Putting on the Armour to Win a Hundred Battles (v10-24)

1. Identify the Object (v10-13)

V10-11 Paul reminds believers that they must not rely on their own strength in spiritual warfare, but rely on the Lord’s power and might to be strong in Him. To win the battle, it is important that we must recognise who we are fighting against. As the saying goes, if we know our enemy and know ourselves, we can win a hundred battles. The object of our battle is not man but the devil.

In today’s churches, brothers and sisters are attacking the body of Christ themselves, and couples are going from loving each other to harming each other. If we don’t have spiritual insight and can’t recognise our enemies and friends, we will not only be futile in our battles, but we will also stumble over our brothers, bring dishonour to God’s name, and suffer loss to ourselves.

2. Putting on the Armour (v14-19)

When we look closely at each piece of armour, we realise that it is in fact an attribute of God Himself, the fullness of Jesus Christ. So what putting on the armour says is that we are to act and behave according to God’s attributes, to imitate God’s own nature.

a) The belt of truth girds the waist

The girdle holds the parts of the armour together, and truth is the foundation of our lives. It is also the integrating force in our victorious lives. When we are faithful according to the truth, we can face the enemy without fear and the battle will be won.

b) The Mirror of Righteousness Covers the Chest

Keep yourself righteous and keep your heart clean from sin. Live a life of light to illuminate others.

c) Wear the Gospel of Peace on your feet

Always be ready to share your faith. More importantly, to maintain an inner peace from Christ in the midst of challenges and adversity.

d) Hold the Shield of Faith

The shield of faith is a defence against temptation and attack. Faith enables signs and wonders to be accomplished. No matter what the challenge, trust in God’s promises, believe firmly that God is a good God, and rely on Him to withstand doubt and fear and to destroy all the flaming arrows of the enemy.

e) Put on the helmet of salvation

Having a Christlike mind is the key to victory. Therefore, always protect your mind from negative thoughts and false teachings with the helmet of salvation, and live out your salvation with a renewed and changed mind.

f) Holding the Sword of the Spirit

What is the sword of the Spirit? It is the Word of God, the Bible. The Word of God is a powerful weapon against spiritual attacks.

g) Watch and Pray in the Spirit

Prayer keeps us alert in spiritual warfare, relying on God’s strength rather than our own. Praying in tongues plays an important role in spiritual warfare. For it is the Holy Spirit praying out the will of God through our prayers.

When we recognise that the enemy is not the beloved ones around us, not the body of Christ, not those in the image of God, but the powers of darkness, the devil and satan, who are in the evil spirit in
the spiritual realm, together with the armour of God to protect and resist the tricks of the enemy, we will be victorious in all battles.

Conclusion: Do your part by connecting in love (v20-24)

Ephesians 5: Walking in The Light
GK611 Morning Devotion
14/08/2024
Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

Every Christian is faced with a choice: are we willing to continue to walk in darkness or are we determined to walk in the light? Today’s Scripture will help us to better understand how to walk in the light and have our lives truly reflect the glory of God.

1. When walking in love (v1-7)

(1) To imitate God (v1-2)

Imitation of God is an important principle in the life of a believer, and the most important aspect of imitation of God is to forgive and love others as Christ did. Christ’s self-sacrificing love was to offer Himself as a price for unworthy sinners, “as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (v2). Thus Paul exhorts believers to “walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us” (v2).

As in a family, children often emulate the behaviour of their parents; they see how they treat others, how they deal with conflict, and naturally learn these behaviours. Similarly, as Christians we are called to imitate Christ.

(2) Speak words of thanksgiving (v3-4)

Paul here specifically reminds the believers to keep away from fornication, uncleanness and covetousness, sins which were common in the society of the day, but which were incompatible with the holiness of the Christian identity. He also places special emphasis on the importance of words, and that lewd words, presumptuous words, and jesting words should be replaced by words of thanksgiving. For our words can build or destroy a person.

(3) Do not be an accomplice (v5-7)

Paul here warns believers not to be partners with those who practise evil, for they have no part in the kingdom of God. He emphasises that covetousness is the same as idolatry because they both place other things above God. In modern society, greed may manifest itself in the improper pursuit of wealth, status, or power, and these often lead people away from the worship of God.

2. Out of darkness into light (v8-14)

Paul continues to exhort believers to turn from a life of darkness and live a life of light. As children of light, we should live in a way that reveals the God in whom we believe. The contrast between light and darkness is often used in Scripture to symbolise good and evil, and believers are called to turn away from the works of darkness and live as witnesses of light.

3. Acting in prudence (v15-21)

Paul reminds believers here to act with prudence and wisdom. The foolish man is vain in heart and faint in mind, living aimlessly and wasting his life. The wise, however, know their calling and will make the best use of their time to do what God has commanded. We live in a world full of temptations and challenges, so we need to be extra careful not to get caught up in worldly values. However, being careful is not just about avoiding sin, it is about actively pursuing spiritual growth and wisdom.

4. The interaction of husband and wife (v22-33)

(1) Wives submit to their husbands (v22-24)

Paul teaches wives to submit to their husbands as to the Lord. The wife’s motive for submitting to her husband is not compulsion or inequality, but because of the “fear of God” (v21), she “submits herself to her husband as to the Lord”.

(2) Husbands are to love their wives (v25-33)

a. Standard and example of love (v25-27)

Paul calls on husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church. This love is a sacrificial love; to love, but loving without wanting any in return. Christ’s love for the church was to lay down his life, so husbands should be willing to sacrifice for their wives. This love is giving first. This is the kind of love that is rejected and still loves.

b. Love your wife as yourself (v28-33)

Paul further emphasises that husbands love their wives as themselves, for wife and husband are one. True love looks to the feelings and needs of the wife and cares for her well-being. He demonstrated the love of Christ by redeeming the church, sanctifying it, and dedicating it to himself, and is an example of how husbands should love their wives, so “husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies;” (v28). Therefore, a believer’s husband and wife relationship is only a marriage after God’s own heart if it reflects the union of Christ and the church.

Conclusion:

Ephesians 5 reminds us to imitate God in all aspects of our lives, to walk in the light, and to act in love and wisdom. We are called to live a life that is different from the world and reflects who we are as Christians. Whether in word, deed, or family relationships, we should follow the teachings of Scripture and demonstrate the love and light of God.

Ephesians 4 Living Out Calling with a New Conduct
GK611 Morning Devotion
13 Aug 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

1. Strive to maintain a united heart (V1-6)

(1) The act worthy of the calling (V1-3)

We are called by God’s grace and our lives should be worthy of that calling. We need to walk in humility, gentleness, patience, and maintain the unity given by the Holy Spirit in love. Unity is not man-made, but a gift from God, so we need to protect it and avoid division!

(2) The basis of unity in Christ (V4-6)

The basis of unity in Christ is: one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God, emphasising the unity of faith. Christians believe in the same God and share the same faith and hope, so they should preserve and live out such unity so that the church can witness the power of unity in a world of strife.

2. Using gifts to build the church (V7-16)

Paul pointed out that Christ has given believers various gifts in order to equip the saints to perform their duties and build up the church. The use of gifts is to speak the truth in love, learn and supervise each other, so as to promote the overall growth of the church, reach the stature of Christ, and become a witness to the glory of God.

‘Speaking the truth in love’ is also a ‘service of the word’. It is common for believers not to “speak” which cause personnel disputes in the church and even church divisions. So challenge yourself to speak the truth in love and contribute to the unity and growth of your church when you need to communicate honestly.

3. Putting off the old man and put on the new man (V17-24)

1) No longer behave like Gentiles (V17-19)

Christians should live a completely different lifestyle from unbelievers. They should not have futility of their mind, but should avoid a darkened heart and a state of isolation from God, resist indulgence in behaviour, and keep a pure conscience.

2) Putting off the old man that has become corrupted (V20-22)

Christians who learn the truth must put off the old man and abandon the habits that represent old corrupted behaviours, just like discarding an old and deteriorated garment.

3) The new man who puts on the image of God (V23-24)

The new man is created in the image of God, possessing righteousness and holiness in truth. Christians must renew their minds, live a new life, and display the glory of God.

Look at your words and deeds today. Are there any old habits that you need to get rid of? How to live a new life of God by renewing your mind? Face challenges every day with a new attitude and live out the glory of God’s image.

4. Showing the style of a new life (V25-32)

Paul here proposes some new manifestations of life that believers should “put on the new man”:
1. Put away lies and speak the truth (V25)
2. Be angry but do not sin (V26)
3. Give no place for the devil (V27)
4. Be diligent and do good things (V28)
5. Say good things that edify people (V29)
6. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit (V30)
7. Put away all evil (V31)

Conclusion: Be kind to each other and forgive each other (V32)

Paul concludes with words of kindness to one another and forgiveness of one another, echoing the humility, gentleness, and patience of the beginning of this chapter, reminding us to have the mind of Christ. Only in this way can we establish true unity with our brothers and sisters, demonstrate the glory of God, and live out a brand-new behaviour in our life of calling! Show the world the power of the gospel!

Ephesians 3 The Mystery of the Gospel of Christ
GK611 Morning Devotion
08 August 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan

1. Revealing the mystery of the gospel (v1-13)

(1) Suffering for the gospel is glorious (v2-6)

Paul had a transcendent vision, seeing the hand of God behind him, and knowing that he was imprisoned for the Lord, he regarded suffering as glorious. Thus there was peace in his captivity, and he was able to write to comfort and encourage the believers in the church at Ephesus.

What is the reason for our suffering? If it is for the Lord, then suffering is actually a blessing in disguise. Let our response be to walk in the mind of God, and not only will we have a good testimony for ourselves, but the more we will have the Lord’s riches in our lives to provide for others.

(2) Becoming a new man in Christ (v2-6)

Paul believed that the Ephesus church had heard that God had entrusted to him the ministry of concern for them. Giving him gifts and revealing to him the mystery of the gospel. That is v6 that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel.

To the Jews of that time, this was a mystery unknown to them. But to us today, of course, we know that Gentiles and Jewish believers can be saved together and become one new person. Since we are inextricably linked to Israel, which is now under attacked by Iran. Have we prayed about the situation in Israel? Pray that God would help us to see that their damage is about the damage of the whole body of Christ and that we cannot stand by and do nothing.

(3) Becoming a deacon of the gospel of Christ (v7-11)

Paul says that he was received as a deacon of the gospel according to the gift of God, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable richness of Christ. Paul says that there are some mysteries that the prophets and apostles received and taught from the pulpit, and the angels watched from heaven, and then suddenly came to their understanding. What an important mystery this is. That is why the performance of the church is so important. Because angels and devils are watching, we should take the responsibility entrusted to us by God seriously.

As the church of God, we should bless the government with prayers, practise godly thinking, do justice, have good mercy, and walk with God in humility. Let us take action tonight and tomorrow. Join the ‘Day of His Power’ to pray for Singapore with the churches.

(4) The ultimate purpose of the gospel of Christ (v12-13)

Paul was imprisoned for articulating the truth to the Ephesian believers. But he would never be deterred by this. He wanted his readers to understand that he became a prisoner for their benefit.

What is the purpose of the equipping course for today when we evangelise and there are many ministries in the church? It’s all to teach us that after we have been benefited, we can go and edify others. This is the ultimate purpose of the mystery of Christ. Sometimes group members feel as if they are forced by the leader to go to classes and prayer meetings. There is no freedom, and they disliked it. But when we look back, isn’t that what we need? If we don’t have it for ourselves and we don’t want to be equipped, how can we bless others? Are we willing to be imprisoned for the gospel of the Lord? It seems like a lot to learn and no freedom, but it is so that we can better rise up and bless others.

Next the Apostle Paul is going to come and pray for the church, this new community. That the believers understand the source of power for believers to understand that they are to be the head of all?

2. Transformation brought about by the gospel (v 14-19)

(1) Bowing the knee in humble prayer (v14-15)

Prayer is the key to unlocking the fulfilment of all God’s promises. Bowing the knee’ represents deep reverence, thanksgiving and humility.

Throughout the ages, there are many characters in the Bible who often prayed on knees, like Solomon and Ezra who knelt down on both knees and prayed to God (Ezra 9:5), Daniel who knelt down on both knees and prayed (Dan. 6:10), and Luke 22:41 Jesus also set an example by kneeling down and praying to God the Father. Brothers and sisters, how long has it been since you have bowed down on your knees and prayed to God? Prayer is an important source of power for believers. Pray more and you will have more power.

Participating in His Day of Power is not an event. It is an opportunity for us to participate in God’s calling and plan. It is an opportunity for us to bless the nation that provides us with jobs, lodging, and the necessities of life. It is also an opportunity for God to give us the opportunity to expand our spiritual lives so that we can have a Kingdom mindset and not self-centred.

(2) Desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit (v16)
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not about shouting slogans or making ourselves feel spiritual. The purpose of being filled with the Holy Spirit is to help us to make Christ the centre of our lives, to rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance in all things, and to allow Christ to reign in our hearts so that we can live more and more like Him.

(3) Live out the love of Christ (v17-19)

Love is the foundation of Christian power, for God is love. Paul is not praying about whether we have love or not. For all of us who are children of God are more or less loving. Paul asks God to make us understand how long and deep is the love of Christ. For our love is often without foundation and cannot stand the test. For a man to truly grasp the love of Christ, and to be rooted and grounded in it, he must be practically grounded in the body of Christ with all the saints, so as to reach unity.

Brothers and sisters, do you long to be a vessel of God’s love? Do you long for God to use you to bring His love to the needy, so that people can have all the fullness of God?

Conclusion: God who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all (v20-21)

-What does the heart ask for? What do you want?
-Spiritual fulfillment and the advancement of God’s kingdom? He will even give you the smoothness of life and earthly blessings that you did not ask!
-Glorify God alone for all generations, forever and ever!

Book of Ephesians 2

Ephesians 2 From Sinners to Members in God’s Family
GK611 Morning Devotion
07 August 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction: Paul thinks about the impact of Jesus’ resurrection power on our lives.

1. The change from death to life (V1-7)

(1) Survive from Sin (V1-3)

Although Christians are now alive, we must never forget how we once were. There was a time when we lived in sin and evil, following the customs of this world, which are dominated by Satan, such as opposing God’s thoughts and values and thinking that ” you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

(2) Demonstrating God’s Love (V4-5)

God’s love begins when we are dead in trespasses. It is only when God takes the initiative to bring the spiritually dead to life that one can be restored to fellowship with God.

(3) Raise up with Christ (V6-7)

New life from Christ refreshes our values. Although we are still living on earth, we have become citizen of heaven, no longer bound by earthly customs and cultures, ideological values, fame and honour, but standing in heaven and seeing all things, and touching all things with a heavenly life.

2. Salvation by grace and faith (V8-10)

The basis of salvation is grace and the way is by faith. Salvation is based solely on God’s free grace, out of God’s great love and mercy, which no man deserves or can earn. What is gained by works will be lost by works; only what is by grace can last forever.

3. Becoming one in Christ (V11-22)

(1) From isolation to intimacy (V11-13)

Once upon a time we were all Gentiles far from God, but now we can draw near to Him. That is because of the coming of Christ Jesus so that all may draw near to God.

(2) Christ brings peace (V14-18)

Christ broke down the middle wall of partition and made Jew and Gentile one. The redemptive sacrifice of the cross redeemed God’s righteous wrath against sinners and reconciled man to God.

(3) Becoming members of God’s family (V19-22)

Today we are no longer outsiders and travellers, but we are one nation with the saints and members of God’s family. God builds the church so that we may become one in Christ and become the dwelling place of God.

Conclusion:

Brothers and sisters, we used to be outsiders, but now we have become members of God’s family through the Lord Jesus Christ. We should be thankful for God’s grace, and love one another in the church, and build God’s house together in unity. May each one of us experience the change from death to life in Christ, and support each other in the church to become an important member of God’s family.

Introduction:

Ephesians Chapter 1 emphasises the various spiritual blessings God has given to Christians in Christ. Let’s explore the spiritual treasures in Christ together.

1. Deposit into the Bank of Heaven (V1-6)

The Apostle Paul wrote to the saints in Ephesus, the faithful people in Christ Jesus. God chose us before the foundation of the world to make us holy and without blemish and predestined us to have the name of a son. This is God’s grace!

Paul seems to have opened a door to the bank of heaven for Christians, a place filled with God’s grace and peace. Our heavenly account is already filled with heavenly blessings. These blessings were prepared for us by God before the creation of the world. We were chosen to become God’s children, and we can take out these precious blessings from this bank every day and share them with the people around us!

2. Guide to the treasure (V7-10)

We have redemption through the blood of Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, which is given to us according to the riches of God’s grace. God also reveals His will and wisdom to us so that we can understand His ultimate plan in Christ—to be united in Christ!

God’s grace is the map to the heavenly treasure through which we receive redemption and forgiveness through the blood of Christ. The map of the treasure also reveals God’s ultimate plan: that everything in heaven and on earth will be reunited in Christ. Let’s look forward to this wonderful future and live God’s will for our lives.

3. Evidence of gaining God’s inheritance (V11-14)

Paul emphasises the Holy Spirit as the believer’s evidence for the foundation. God has predestined us according to His will so that we can glorify Him.

God has explained our inheritance in Christ, which He has predestined for us according to His will. Imagine having our names on the property inventory in heaven! The Holy Spirit is God’s seal to us, proving that we are His children. We must rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, live a life of faith and hope, and become witnesses of the glory of God.

4. Spiritual energy source (V15-23)

(1) Pray for the eyes of the heart to be enlightened (V15-18)

Paul constantly prayed for believers, asking God to give them a spirit of wisdom and revelation, and to have their eyes opened, so that they could truly know God and know the hope of God’s calling.

Our inner eyes need to be illuminated, just like we need a pair of spiritual glasses. Only in this way can we clearly see the hope and glory God has given us, and clearly see God’s deeds!

(2) Know the power of God (V19-23)

Paul prayed that believers would know the power of God, the power that raised Christ from the dead and raised Him to heaven to sit at the right hand of God.

The power of Christ’s resurrection is not only a historical event, but also the source of motivation for our lives today. We must believe in this power operating in our lives and rely on it to overcome all challenges in life and manifest the power of God.

Conclusion: A journey to discover spiritual treasures

Through this chapter, we see the various blessings God has given us in Christ.
May each of us cherish the heavenly treasures, live a life full of joy and power, and become a witness of God’s grace and glory.
