1 Chronicles Chapter 21: True Repentance Shall Receive God’s Mercy
GK611 Morning Devotion
16/07/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

Introduction:

1. David’s sin (V1-7)

David’s motive in counting the people was motivated by being provoked by Satan to commit the sin of pride and complacency. Therefore, this counting of the people clearly shows that it was not pleasing to man or to God; for David’s commands were detestable to Joab and displeasing to God, trapping Israel in sin.

Satan can really only agitate us, but the final decision lies with us! Therefore, beware of the fact that when we achieve something, we can easily become proud and forget that it is all from God, and begin to boast about all our money and status, or our own cleverness, and thus fall into the same situation as David, and commit the same sins as David.

2. God’s judgement (V8-14)

David confessed his sins to God and pleaded for His forgiveness. A righteous God punishes sin even though He forgives the repentant. But God had mercy on Israel and chose the penalty that would hurt them the least – a three-day plague that took the lives of 70,000 people. When David counted the number of people in an attempt to count his own strength, God penalised by reducing the number of the people!

God is righteous and He will not tolerate sin. Repentance means that we are willing to face and correct our mistakes and accept God’s righteous punishment.

3. David’s repentance (V15-17)

David not only confessed his sins again in his prayer, but also asked God to inflict the punishment on himself so that the people could be spared from the attack. David, as the king of Israel, knew that his duty was to serve God’s people, so he sincerely repented and was willing to take the blame for his sin.

True repentance is admitting one’s sin and asking God’s forgiveness. When we realise our mistakes, are we willing to put aside our face and pride and pray to God for mercy, as David did? Repentance is a change of attitude from self-centred to God-centred!

4. God’s mercy (V18-30)

The righteous God sent the disaster, and the loving God also told David how to quell the disaster, which was to build an altar for God in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. Because God, in His abundant mercy, first regrets for His people, He then gives David the opportunity to repent, build an altar, and offer sacrifices. What appeared to be a judgment from God eventually turned into a blessing from God. The threshing floor where David offered his sacrifice became the site of the sanctuary, the holy place where God met with man, and the place where God listened to man’s prayers.

God’s mercy is infinite, but it requires true repentance on our part. David’s sacrifice on the threshing floor of Ornan represented his complete surrender and trust in God. Are we willing to pay the price for our mistakes and show a true heart of repentance? When we repent, God’s mercy and forgiveness will be unceasingly given to restore our relationship with Him!

Conclusion: God’s mercy is not difficult to obtain; what is difficult is true repentance of man!

What God wants is a ‘a broken and a contrite heart’, and true repentance will receive God’s mercy!

1 Chronicles Chapter 20: Man’s Weakness, God’s Faithfulness
GK611 Morning Devotion
12/07/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher Chang

Introduction: An arrogant soldier will be defeated

1. David’s Weakness

(1) Not having a continuously alert mind (V1)

A year later, when they were harvesting, the same enemy came again. Same day, same enemy, but David seems to have underestimated the enemy. The scriptures record that when the kings went to war, it was no longer David who fought in person, but Joab who led the army to capture Rabbah. David stayed in Jerusalem, and “2 Samuel” records that during this period he leisurely paraded on the flat roof of the palace, saw Bathsheba bathing, and ended up committing adultery with her. 1 Chronicles completely ignores this period of history.

King David believed that he had secured his throne and that his power and military strength had reached the peak, so he ignored the importance of capturing Rabbah. Success and comfort often make people lose their alertness, making it easier for the flesh to take over.

(2) Failure to remain grateful and humble (V2-3)

This chapter has a slightly different flavour from the previous chapters. There is a bit of pride when David and the army receive the golden crown. In the past, he chose to cut off the chariot horses’ tendons and consecrate all the gold, silver and spoils and offer to God. But this time, he chose to display the spoils, especially the crown symbolising strength, and also took a lot of goods. However, the scriptures do not describe how to deal with these properties, nor do they see the scene of offering sacrifices to God after victory.

People sometimes become accustomed to certain things, gradually take grace for granted, and forget to continue to be grateful and humble. As a result, it becomes increasingly difficult to be grateful, and we gradually live in the present moment for granted. Eventually, life may go astray without us realising it. This is indeed worthy of our deep reflection.

2. God is faithful and keeps his covenant (V4-8)

The second section of the passage begins with “later” and describes the period of David’s adultery with Bathsheba and Absalom’s rebellion. Chapter 21 of “2 Samuel” records that during this period, King David’s courage and strength were no longer what they used to be. He was even almost killed by a giant, but his followers would not let him go to war again. Therefore, in today’s fourth verse, David’s name is omitted and replaced by the names of his mighty warriors.

Although David’s weakness brought turmoil to the country, God still fulfilled His promise to bring peace to Israel and helped David establish a peaceful kingdom so that he could rise up and build the temple. This shows God’s faithfulness and mercy, and God still keeps His covenant.

Conclusion: Be effortless but don’t be undaunted, be humble and grateful, stay alert and continue to win!

1 Chronicles 19 The Life Choice of Winning and Winning Again
GK611 Morning Devotion
11/07/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan

Introduction: True or False?

1. Life choices that please god (V1-5)

We know that after being redeemed by the Lord to eternal life, it is very important to live a godly life to ensure that we do not fall from our salvation. Therefore, today we will contrast the choices made in the lives of David and the king of Ammon, how do we make the right life choices in the midst of battle?

(1) Kindness vs. villainy (V1-3)

When Nahash died, David wanted to treat Hanun well because he was thankful for Nahash’s kindness to him. So he sent his servants to Hanun to comfort him.

From the other books of the Bible, we know that David was not only a grateful man, but also a man who knew how to return kindness. However, the chief of the Ammonites was a man of poor moral values. Suspecting that David was up to no good, he wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to attack Rabbah, the capital of Ammon.

Brothers and sisters, are you a grateful person? Or do you often suspect people of being unkind and trying to take advantage of you?

(2) Impulsive actions vs. Comforting and protection (V4-5)

As the king of a nation, Hanun was not only incapable of discernment, but also humiliated David’s servants by shaving off half of their beards, and cutting off the lower part of their clothes to expose their lower bodies.

On the contrary, when David realised that his servants had been humiliated, instead of trying to deal with the Ammonites, he sent his men to greet and comfort them. He arranged for them to stay in the city of Jericho until their beards grew out.

May we ask God to give us the ability to discern. When offended, come to God quickly and ask Him to help us not to act on our flesh. Don’t ruin yourself and hurt others by acting on impulse.

2. Godly strategies for winning the battle (V6-19)

(1) Buying people’s hearts without money (V6-9, 19)

Hanun anticipated that his reckless behaviour would lead to war. He used large sums of money to hire the Arameans to join forces against Israel, but we know that money can’t buy people’s loyalty. v19 When the kings who belonged to Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by the Israelites, they made peace with David and submitted to him. So the Arameans did not dare to help the Ammonites anymore.

A man who can be bribed with money, in a life-and-death situation, will leave his comrades behind and run for his life without a second thought. Therefore, it is foolish to rely on such tactics to win a battle.

(2) Watch for each other and fight for God (V10-15)

v12 Joab said to Abishai, ““If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you. Watching over and supporting one another and being of one mind is the key to victory in battle. It is also important for the army to be strong and have the morale of a great man. When the Israelite army committed themselves into God’s hands and asked for God’s will to be done, God was pleased to let them have victories.

(3) Turning back from obsession (V16-18)

The defeated Arameans were reluctant and obsessed. Therefore, they sent messengers to bring in the army from the other side of the river. As a result, they were defeated by the army led by David, and even the general, Shophach, was killed.

One of the greatest failures in life is to be wrong and still not realise it, and to refuse to come to God and seek Him sincerely. We know we are wrong, but we do not have the heart to repent and change. Then we will always be in the midst of defeat and will never have a chance to win.

Conclusion:

In order to be victorious in battle, God’s children must make life choices that please God according to God’s heart, and choose God’s battle strategies wisely before every challenge or obstacle.

1 Chronicles Chapter 18: The Lord brings victory!
GK611 Morning Devotion
10/07/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

We see how David was victorious in relying on God’s promises and experiencing God as the One who speaks the truth!

1. Gain victory by relying on God’s promises (V1-13)

David trusted God’s promises to him, which brought him continued victory:

(1) Victory over Enemies (V1-2)

David defeated the Philistines and Moabites and captured their territory and wealth. We see in David’s life that he didn’t just overcome his enemies, but he overcame his dependence on his own abilities. For example, in defeating the Philistines and Moabites, he didn’t just use wisdom and strategy, he relied on God’s help.

Do we have similar challenges in our lives that require us to rely more on God than our own abilities to meet them?

(2) Fix your eyes on God (V3-8)

Because David knew that it was the Lord who had given him victory, he did not look at the strength of his enemies, but fixed his eyes on God, knowing full well that God would help him. These battles showed David that it was God who was leading him to strengthen God’s kingdom and helped him to follow God more clearly.

If we rely solely on our excellent conditions and circumstances, our spiritual life is likely to stagnate and even backslide. This is because man’s eyes are easily diverted from God to things that man thinks are reliable, and as a result, he loses his way. Therefore, we should always fix our eyes on God.

(3) To the glory of God (V9-13)

David showed his complete trust and obedience to God by giving Him all the loots of war and wealth. David’s behavior reminds us that in achieving success or gaining wealth, we should not forget that it is all a gift from God.

2. Rule according to God’s nature (V14-17)

David knew full well that it was God who had established his nation, and so he ruled it according to God’s principles. In David’s governance of Israel, he established an organised administrative system by appointing different positions to manage the affairs of the nation. For example, he appointed Joab as the commander, Jehoshaphat as the historian, and Zadok as the chief priest, etc. All of these were running the country according to God’s principles.

We see that David’s kingdom was blessed by God. He not only had good leaders, but also good followers.

Conclusion: With God in your heart, you will be victorious!

Brothers and sisters, God is our source of strength and our guide to victory! When we have God in our hearts like David, the Lord gives us victory wherever we go!

Chapter 17 of 1 Chronicles shows King David’s journey on the path of God’s grace. David wanted to build a temple for God, but God made a greater promise to him. This passage teaches us how to be thankful along the path to grace!

1. David’s heart and God’s plan (V1-6)

(1) David took the initiative to build a temple for God (V1-2)

David thought that he was living in a royal palace made of cedar wood, and that the ark of God was placed in the tabernacle, so he took the initiative to build a temple for God. David hopes to repay God’s grace and build a temple for God! The prophet Nathan initially agreed with David’s plan, but God had different plans.

(2) God spoke to David through the prophet (V3-6)

God told David through the prophet Nathan that night: God did not want David to build a temple because God did not need a temple as a residence; and David was a warrior and was not suitable to build a temple for God and people to rest (1 Chronicles 28: 3). God didn’t want David to build a temple for Him, not because God didn’t like David’s idea ofbuilding a temple or because He didn’t like David as a person; it was because God was a God who cared about people. He loved David and wanted to protect and help David with no conditions!

Our good intentions and plans need to be confirmed by God and we cannot act based on our own will. Thank God for His guidance in our plans.

2. God’s promise and grace given to David (V7-15)

God accepted David’s heart to build a temple for Him and made a covenant with David, granting David the following promises:

will always be with David: God will be with David always.
will be cut off David’s enemies: God will cut off all of David’s enemies.
will make David’s name great: God will make David’s name great.
will choose a place for Israel: God will choose a place where the Israelites can live in peace and tranquillity.
will build a house for David: God will build a house for David, so that his descendants will succeed him as king and establish his kingdom. And will also ask his descendants to sit on the throne.

God is faithful, we should be grateful for His grace and wait patiently for His promises to come true! God repeatedly says “I will” in this passage, indicating that God’s giving is unconditional! And He is the God who can definitely accomplish it!

3. David humbly prayed to God with thanksgiving (V16-27)

David accepted God’s rejection of his heart to build the temple, and came before God with a humble heart, thanking, praising and praying for God’s promises to him. David has a grateful heart!

When we receive God’s grace, we must humble ourselves, thank and praise God, and pray for His promises to be fulfilled in our lives.

Conclusion:On the path of God’s grace, we must always maintain a grateful heart and give thanks all the way.
