1 Chronicles 16: Manage the Altar and All the People Will Be Blessed
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

1. To offer sacrifices in front of the ark of the covenant—blessing everyone (V1-3)

The Ark of the Covenant was invited in by everyone: everyone had been preparing for a long time, and now they are united in inviting God. This is something that pleases God, isn’t it?

The ark of the covenant was placed in David’s tent: The synagogue or tabernacle was originally the “dwelling place” instructed by God, and David caught God’s heart and knew that he would prepare a place for God to “place the ark of the covenant.”As God delights in manifesting His presence and blessing in a particular place, as He did in the house of Obed-Edom.

Secondly, David’s sacrifice also showed people’s confession and gratitude, which restored a beautiful relationship with God. Then he will become a blessed vessel, so that he can impart blessings to all those under him.

2. To praise before the ark of the covenant – musical instruments and trumpets (V4-6)

The ark of the covenant represents the presence of God. When you come before God, you must worship and praise, and use musical instruments and trumpets to blow loudly in worship. Worship will bring out the glory of God, and people’s lives will experience God’s works. Just as David experienced playing the harp to worship, he was able to drive away the evil spirits from King Saul. Obviously, when we worship, we must bring down the kingdom of God. God is in control, and signs and wonders will inevitably happen.

3. To worship with songs—experience His power (V7-11)

[Worship and prayer] are the main weapons of war of the mother church GA611. In worship, we meet God, and at the same time we come before God to pray and complete the work of the coming and reigning of God’s kingdom. V11 talks about seeking God’s face, but also seeking God’s power. These are two important channels for God’s children to experience the power of faith. They are both the most basic and most necessary spiritual life.

4. Remember God’s covenant—God has judgment (V12-17)

God has a covenant with man, and God is a God who keeps covenants and shows mercy. “Judgment” is mentioned twice here, which means that God is the God who judges our blessings according to His covenant with us. Keep God’s covenant and experience God’s promises.

5. The promises in the covenant—God is the guarantee (V18-22)

In a society where “the weak being eaten by the strong”, even if it is a civilized modern society, it is still inevitable to be bullied and robbed. Especially spiritually, there are evil ones who want to devour Christians at any time. If we do not carefully rely on Jehovah, how can we not be devoured?

6. The promise of salvation—glory to God (V23-29)

Telling God’s works and bearing witness to God’s name always glorifies God. How do we become such people? It is better to practise what we do than to speak with our mouths, so that those who have the opportunity to come into contact with us can see that we are His witnesses.

7. The whole earth will sing praises—God will reign (V30-36)

In the future world, God will be king and rule, and the whole earth will praise God’s name. Doesn’t this also mean that Christ will become the King of kings in the future, and we who belong to the Lord will also reign with Him. Therefore, how do we identify our identity and practise it in advance!

Conclusion: Service before the ark of the covenant—morning and evening Sacrifice (V37-43)

We now live in GK611 where there are Morning Devotion and evening prayers. This is an opportunity to practise morning and evening sacrifices.

Blessed Obed-Edom serves as the gatekeeper, and in the end David, his family, and the people of Israel will all be blessed!

1 Chronicles 15 Rebuilding God’s Presence
GK611 Morning Devotion
04/07/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan

Introduction: The bravest person

1. Realigning receive the ark of God again (v1-15)

(1) Self-Reflection, Illuminated by God (v1-2)

In Tuesday’s 13th chapter, read about how the ceremony of transporting the ark of the God resulted in the sorrowful and dsmay of burying Uzzah because the ark was transported in a way that was not to God’s liking. As a result, David, out of fear and discouragement, left the ark of God with Obe-Edom for the time being.

I’m sure David must have done a lot of soul-searching during those three months and realised where he had gone wrong, hence v2 David said, “No one may carry the ark of God but the Levite,” In the records of Deuteronomy and Numbers, God had long ago chosen the tribe of Kohath among the Levites to be responsible for carrying the ark of God and to serve Him forever.

Brothers and sisters, when we make mistakes, God is pleased to let us know what the mistakes are. Therefore, we should not blame ourselves, run away, or blame God for our failures. Instead, we should come boldly to God and seek Him.

2. Courageously face and fix the mistakes (v3-15)

a) Correction in behaviour (v3-10)

David understood God’s heart and rose up courageously to face his faults and to re-correct his behaviour. This time he strictly followed the Law and chose the right group of Levites to meet the ark of God.

b) Adjustment of the mindset (v11-13)

David reminded the priests and the Levitical tribe leaders that they should know what their duties were and that they should familiarise themselves with God’s laws and regulations. When they saw that David was going to use oxen to carry the Ark of God, they actually had a duty to speak up to David and suggest that God’s command was that the Ark of God was to be carried by men.

When those in authority come up with strategies that are not in line with some of the laws of the company or even the government, it is our duty to speak out boldly to them. As a supervisor or authority, we must also have the humility to accept the honesty of our subordinates who speak in love, just as David did.

c) Correction in life (v14-15)

The Ark of God represents the presence of God. No man can see the face of the Lord unless he is holy. Therefore, David commanded the priests, the Levites, to purify themselves, and the sons of Levi to earnestly pay the price of carrying the ark of God on their bars and shoulders. Without partiality and in obedience do as the Lord commanded through Moses.

Though David had failed and was afraid and discouraged. But because of his love and fear of God, he was willing to correct his mistakes and start again. Let us also learn that we are not discouraged when we fall. Rather, we rely on God’s help to get up, pat the dust on our bodies to adjust our steps, and move forward again in the right way. For failure is only proof that this way is not possible. Rely on God to recorrect and accumulate experience in order to pave the way of victory.

2. Reorganising the team to do its job (v16-24)

David next rigorously instructed the Levitical tribe leaders to re-establish the worship team. Those who played musical instruments, those who sang, those who blew trumpets before the ark of God, those who guarded the door before the ark of God, and worship leaders, the head of the worship team and those who taught vocal. Each person’s position and every detail is clearly explained.

For Christians to operate God’s presence, worship is absolutely indispensable. Because we were created to worship God. And worship is one of those important gifts that will survive into eternity. While it is important to be alone with God, this passage also gives us a special insight into God’s desire to see His children come to His house in unity and seek Him in corporate worship.

In addition, gatekeepers are listed in the worship, especially in Obed- Edom. It was Obed-Edom’s destiny to be a gatekeeper, and he was passionate and eager. When Uzzah was killed, the people felt that the Ark of God was like a ticking time bomb and were reluctant to take it in, but Obed-Edom was willing, and so God remembered all that Obed-Edom had done. The Ark of God stayed in the house of Obed-Edom for three months. God blessed him greatly.

I encourage the brothers and sisters in the worship team not to underestimate their own service. You are all like Obed-Edom, operating in God’s presence, guarding the temple doors and keeping God’s presence. Pray that in your respective roles, you will be united in one heart and worship in spirit and in truth.

3. Rejoice in the sacrifice and be with God (v25-29)

First of all the Scriptures show us that receiving the Ark of the God was not a matter for certain people, but for all Israel. It was not just David and the Levites who were to come and worship God, but the whole Israel.

We are not the only ones who are to worship Jesus today. Our whole family has to come and believe in Jesus. The whole community of Shunfu, the whole of Singapore is going to come to believe in Jesus. So let’s seize the opportunity to evangelise.

In addition to the sacrifice of the seven bulls and the seven rams.V28 David rejoiced with all the people of Israel, and shouted for joy and shouting and with the sound of the horn, with trumpets and with cymbals, making music with stringed instruments and harps. When the Ark of God came to Jerusalem, the whole scene in the city was in an atmosphere of celebratory boisterousness.

When we come on a pilgrimage to see the face of God, what kind of mood and pace do we come with? What is our attitude when we come to church for worship each week? Arriving late? Dragging our feet? Do we worship with joy like the people of Israel? Dance enthusiastically like David?

While the whole city was celebrating, Michal, Saul’s daughter, saw King David dancing enthusiastically, and despised him in her heart. For she thought it disgraceful for a high and mighty king to dance in front of his servants and maids without regard for decency. Michal’s concern was for the honour of upper class, but David’s concern was to find the presence of God.

Brothers and sisters, are we happy in our lives? Are we happy in our service? What are the obstacles in our lives that prevent us from rejoicing in God?

Conclusion: Keeping God’s Presence

David readjusted from his failure and used God’s way to finally bring the ark of God back to Jerusalem so that Jerusalem would finally become the centre of worship for the people of Israel.

No matter what the reason is that we have lost our zeal to worship God, or perhaps each week we come to worship God with an incorrect attitude and mindset, today, let’s rededicate ourselves to offering a worship in spirit and in truth to God wholeheartedly with a heart that is truly in fear of God and joyful. Keep the presence of God!

1 Chronicles 14 It’s all depends on God
GK611 Morning Devotion
03/07/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

We see how God manifested His power and grace in David’s life.

1. God prospered David’s kingdom (V1-7)

a. God established David as king (V1-2)

God’s establishment of David as king is evidenced by the fact that David had established good diplomatic relations with the other kingdoms. However, God did not give David honour and glory to prosper his kingdom for his personal benefit alone, but “for his own people Israel”! Therefore, when we achieve something, we should realise that it is a gift from God, and that it is to enable us to better help others and to glorify God.

b. God blessed David’s family (V3-7)

Despite David’s lustful weakness, God still had mercy and blessed him with a multitude of children. However, David’s polygamy (which was not in line with God’s standard of monogamy) increased his power and influence, but it also caused discord in his family, jealousy and strife, and even murder.

2. God gives David victory over his enemies (V8-17)

The Philistines were a people whose military technology was superior to that of Israel. The Philistines were known for their toughness in their day and were a constant threat to the nations. Saul fought against them and lost. But we see that God gave David the victory! This is clearly a sign of the success of David’s kingship.

a. God put his enemies in David’s hands (V8-12)

David did not go to war with all that he had and all that he could do, but first “inquired of God”; and when God promised that he could go, he went. Here we can see that not only did David seek God in all things when he was pursued by Saul in the wilderness, but he also seeks God in all things now that he is sitting on the throne as king. Therefore, when we face challenges, we should also seek God’s help and guidance first.

b. God went before David to attack his enemies (V13-17)

After the failure of the first attack on Israel the Philistines returned. But instead of following the success of the previous attack and naturally attacking them head-on, David asked God again. As a result, this time God did not ask David to meet them head on, but asked him to launch a surprise attack from the rear to cut off the Philistines’ retreat route, for God wanted to completely disrupt the Philistines’ power.

David modelled for us that when we are faced with a new challenge or task, we may be inclined to rely on past experiences and methods. However, we should be humble enough to seek God’s guidance once again, rather than relying on past experiences in a self-righteous manner.

Conclusion: Seek God in all things

Let each of us realise that the source of achievement and blessing comes from God. And, in every day’s life, continue to rely on God’s guidance and grace, and give glory to God whether we face good or bad times, and witness God’s greatness and love through our actions and lives, so that we will continue to be blessed by God.

1 Chronicles 13 Using God’s Way to Do God’s Work
GK611 Morning Devotion
02/07/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

Introduction:

After David became king of Israel, he was about to transport the Ark of the God back to Jerusalem. This was a beautiful thing; but the mistakes in the process reminded us: God’s work must be done in God’s way.

1. Decide to bring back the Ark of God with one heart(V1-4)

As soon as David ascends the throne as king, he will bring back the Ark of the God and restore the Israelites to seek Him with God, because the Ark of the God is a testimony of the covenant between God and man and a sign of God’s presence. The whole congregation unanimously agreed with David’s suggestion and decided to bring back the Ark of the God.

When we serve God, we do not first solve our own problems, but restore a normal relationship with God. When the relationship between man and God returns to normal, all the difficult things on earth will become trivial. Just as the Lord Jesus taught: You must seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you (Matthew 6:33).

2. The way of transporting the Ark of God is wrong (V5-8)

All the people of Israel went together to bring the ark back to Jerusalem. They put the ark on a new cart and pulled it by oxen. However, carrying the ark in a cart was a wrong way to imitate the Philistines. According to God’s law: the Ark of the God must be carried on the shoulders of the Levites on poles.

When doing God’s work, we cannot rely solely on our own wisdom and experience, but we must seek God’s instructions and teachings. Our motives and goals can be godly, but the methods and ways are equally important.

3. Serious consequences of making the same mistake again and again (V9-10)

Uzza saw the ox stumble and stretched out his hand to hold on to the ark. God was angry with him and killed him. Although Uzza acted with good intentions, Uzza and Ahio, as Levites, had the responsibility to know not to touch holy things, lest they die (Numbers 4:15).

God is not mocked, and even well-intentioned actions can have serious consequences if they go against God’s ways. When we serve God, we must follow God’s way, be fervent, and more importantly, we must understand God’s will!

4. David feared God because of his sorrow (V11-12)

The original meaning of “heart troubled” is “angry and full of injustice”. David was angry at the death of Uzza and feared God for it, so instead of bringing the ark back to the city, he brought it to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

When we make mistakes and are rebuked by God, do we get angry with Him? Will this change your faith in God? We must pay attention to our mentality, lest we fail to obey God’s discipline and instead become angry with God and struggle with Him!

5. Those who fear God will be blessed by God (V13-14)

Even David was afraid of the murder of Uzza; but Obed-edom was actually willing to receive the ark of God into his home! This shows his attitude of fear and obedience to God! Therefore, God greatly blessed his family and everything he owned!

When we do God’s work in God’s way and obey God’s instructions, God’s blessings will come to us and our families. Don’t be afraid and retreat from the failures of others but seize opportunities so that God’s presence and blessings can fill our homes!

Conclusion: If you work according to God’s way, you will please God and be blessed by God!

1 Chronicles 12: Help Comes from God
GK611 Morning Devotion
28/06/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher Chang

Introduction: What you need most when you are lost.

1. If there is fear within and persecution outside, God can help! (V1-22)

1) Get help in the early stages of Ziklag (V1-7)

David hid in Ziklag out of fear of Saul and fled from the wilderness to seek refuge with the Philistine King Achish. Achish trusted David and gave him Ziklag. At this time, Saul’s relatives and the troops who supported Saul came to David’s side. Despite his doubts and fears, David chose to trust them. He continued to receive help from all sides and believed he was relying on God’s guidance.

2) Get help during the stronghold period (V8-18)

The captains of the tribe of Gad also came to the stronghold in the wilderness and joined David. The smallest was capable to handle a hundred men, and the largest was capable to handle a thousand. They are extremely powerful. Later, Benjamin and the people of Judah were inspired by God’s spirit and came to the stronghold to follow David.

3) Get help in the later period of Ziklag (V19-22)

In the later years of Ziklag, David did not fight against the Israelites, but the Philistines began to fear David’s betrayal and did not allow him to participate in the war. At this time, the people of Mamasseh surrendered to David and became the mighty warriors and army commanders. Every day there were people became David’s helpers, making his army like God’s army.

2. God’s Word, gather an army, and become the kingdom of God! (V23-40)

David became king in Hebron in the south, after Saul died, many warriors joined David and made him king of all Israel. They gave Saul’s kingdom to David according to the Word of the Lord. Everyone followed David sincerely, no matter what situation he was in, and they wholeheartedly made him king.

Conclusion: Don’t be afraid, stand up and rely on the Spirit of God, raise up an army, and move forward!

Ask the Lord to give us the strength and courage to be like a warrior like David, choosing to rely on God when we are at the lowest point and fearful, and move forward by relying on God’s Spirit. Walk in the truth with faith and a pure heart, follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, give thanks in everything, not be affected by the world, and move forward step by step with the vision and mission given by God. God’s will for us will be accomplished, just as it was for David.

1 Chronicles 11 Wait for the Fulfillment of God’s Promises
GK611 Morning Devotion
27/06/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan

Introduction: Uprooting

1. God promised, man must wait (V1-9)

(1) Wait patiently and do not be hasty (V1-3)

David knew that it was not yet time for him to be crowned king, so when Saul died, he did not ask God if he could be crowned king. Rather, he asked him which city in Judah he could go to? As a result, God let him go to Hebron, and he went there for 7.5 years.

Often people are unable to wait patiently, and in their haste to fulfill God’s promises, they end up doing the opposite of what they should have done. Just like Abraham and Sarah, they created an Ishmael, and the thousands of years of enmity is still unresolved today.

Ask God to give us faith and patience. Don’t be impatient even if His appointed time for the fulfillment of His promises is different from what we expect.

(2) Man cannot stand against things that are yours (V4-6)

Jerusalem was in the hands of the Jebusites. David wanted to establish the capital there but was prevented from doing so. But Joab attacked from the secret waterways of the Jebusites and took Jerusalem and made it the capital of Israel. And Joab became Israel’s marshal as David had promised.

We have to believe that what God has promised and committed to us is yours, that is, man cannot stop it even if he wants to. Just as Saul tried to stop David from becoming the king of Israel, and eventually lost his own life.

(3) Man grows strong with God’s presence (V7-9)

V9 So David went on and became great, and the Lord of hosts was with him.
Although Jerusalem was only 6 kilometers away from Gibeah, Saul’s capital city, Saul was unable to capture it for 40 years as king. However, David captured the city as soon as he arrived. This shows how important it is to have God’s presence.
To be blessed and to live a life set apart from the nations of the earth, We cannot do everything we do, our ministries, our careers, our studies, our service, etc., without the presence of God.

Summary:

Be faithful that whatever God has promised He will ulfil. We plead that God to help us not to let ourselves be the ones who stop God from fulfilling the promises He has made for our lives.

2. God promises, He will prepare (V10-47)

v11-47 records the leaders of David’s 51 warriors. These were the mighty warriors who had risen up to help David establish his kingdom. And v10 says it was according to the Word of the Lord which he commanded the Israelites.

It is evident that when God promised, He is responsible to the end. If we are willing to wait for God’s leading and respond to Him; just as God prepared many mighty men for David, so He will prepare what we need.

(1) Fierce and faithful warriors who were not afraid to die (V11-19)

V11-14 mentions 2 of David’s mighty men of valor and faithfulness.

Jashobeam was the fiercest of the fiercest. He killed 300 men in one pass with his spear. V12 Eleazar alone defeated the Philistines and saved the field of barley when everyone fled in fear.

The barley fields were one of the main foods of the people of Israel. It can also prefigure the spiritual food of our spiritual life, which is truth. Will you boldly defend the truth for the Lord Jesus? Even when everyone around you is against you, and even when many Christians compromise because of mass pressure, will you stand firm for the truth?

V15 records that when the three warriors heard that David wanted to drink water from the well in his hometown, they even risked their lives to break through the Philistine encampment and drew water from the well by the gate of Bethlehem and brought it to David.

Let’s think through these 3 warriors’ genuine and immense love for David, are we authentic enough in our relationship with authority? Or are there many things I don’t want the authority to know because I don’t want to be asked, adjusted, or not willing to obey? As children, do we know what our parents like and don’t like?

David was afraid to drink the water that the 3 warriors had taken back with their lives. And poured the water before the Lord. Brothers and sisters, is our love for the Lord Jesus like the water David poured out in front of God, pouring out our lives before God, and serving the Lord with our lives unreservedly for what He desires?

(2) Honourable and mighty warriors with a beautiful name (V20-25)

The scripture records that Abishai and Benaiah were the most honourable of all the warriors and earned their name. Benaiah went down into the pit in the freezing cold to kill a lion and an Egyptian who was five elbows tall. Let us have the faith to be like Benaiah and not bow down to circumstances and enemies. For to be victorious in battle depends on the Lord.

(3) Warriors united to build the kingdom of God (V26-47)

This passage mentions many Gentiles by name. God paired Israel with the Gentiles to valiantly help David gain the kingdom and put him on the throne.

The book of Ephesians records that the Gentile church will not return until the two churches are united with the chosen people of Israel as one new man. Therefore, like those warriors of David’s kingdom, although we have different abilities, different origins, different races, and are Gentiles, we all have a common mission, which is to bring the gospel back to Jerusalem.

Conclusion: Prepare yourself

God has a promise, and man has to respond. Often our response is the opportunity God gives us to grow, mature and expand our lives. Therefore, while waiting for God’s promises to be fulfilled, prepare yourself. Seize every opportunity to become a warrior and general of the kingdom of God. So that the promises of the Lord will be fulfilled not only in us, but also in others.
